2010 Costa Rica<br />

International Service Program<br />

1 Trip 25 Participants 1920 Service Hours<br />

The Costa Rica International Service Program included a<br />

spring break week in the Monteverde region <strong>of</strong> Puntarenas<br />

Province. Due to its vast stretches <strong>of</strong> protected cloud forest,<br />

this region is one <strong>of</strong> the most biologically diverse spots on the<br />

planet. In addition to possessing protected biological treasures,<br />

Monteverde is a peaceful, beautiful agrarian community<br />

steeped in ecological tourism.<br />

Participants had the option to take the course International<br />

Development, <strong>Community</strong> Empowerment and Social Change<br />

for one political science credit that meets the new international<br />

requirement for graduation. The course focused on the<br />

interdisciplinary and collaborative nature <strong>of</strong> communitybased<br />

efforts in international development, especially in rural<br />

25<br />

areas in lesser developed nations <strong>of</strong> the global South. This<br />

course introduced participants to community, cooperative and<br />

<br />

<br />

access to appropriate and relevant education for all. <strong>Student</strong>s<br />

<br />

<strong>of</strong> women in development, fair trade agriculture, tourism,<br />

sustainable development, conservation biology and cooperative<br />

management.
