PAGE 2 Pastor’s Corner Marathon Sunday in Chicago! Welcome to all of our many visitors who are joining us at Old St. Pat’s, especially our runners and wheelchair athletes who are participating in the Chicago Marathon. We are fortunate enough to host one of the top five marathons in the world with almost 45,000 participants who literally come from every corner of the Earth. This is a world class event for Chicago, and Old St. Pat’s is extremely proud to be a participant along the 26.2 mile course and an “official” cheering sight for these great athletes. Congratulations to the thousands of runners who are running on behalf of another human being who cannot and to those who have raised more than $4 million dollars for worthy causes and charities. The stories of why people choose to do this marathon are sacred and incredible. Welcome in a special way to all those who are joining us at the 5 p.m. Mass today. You get an extra medal for being here as we ask God’s blessing upon your aches, pains, and blisters! If you were with us last weekend, I hope you felt the contagious energy created as a way of acknowledging and celebrating the members of Old St. Pat’s. And what a great Sunday it was with “opening day” for our dynamic Family Ministries with Partners, Foundations, and Blueprints launching into a new year. As I mentioned at all the Masses, and what was expressed by the unbelievable staff of Old St. Pat’s, we are grateful you are here and we will never waver at building a church environment where all are invited and hospitality is at the center of our gathering. In creating a place of welcome, we help to establish a way in which to better welcome the mysteries of God. It happens not only on Sunday, but in all the ways we express the mission of Old St. Patrick’s. Thank you so very much for your continued generosity to Old St. Pat’s, and for your continued consideration of a gift toward the Children at the Crossroads, our scholarship fund for the 30 percent of the students at Frances Xavier Warde who could not otherwise afford such a top rate Catholic education. We are deeply grateful, ALWAYS! Fr. Tom Hurley TODAY’S (FAIR TRADE) MARKET REPORT On Sunday, Sept. 20, more than 500 hundred people stopped in the church hall to participate in the Alternative Market sponsored by The Justice Initiative (Old St. Pat’s Social Justice ministry). Since then, we have been hearing from many of the exhibitors who participated in this “Season for Social Justice” event. We would like to share some of their remarks with you, and offer a big “thank you” to Marilyn Antonik, Mariana Delinck Manley, and their team of volunteers for planning and hosting this remarkable event. Honoring the Dignity of Work Supporting the Rights of Workers “Old St. Pat's Alternative Market was a success. The vendors and the congregation had a good time and they both learned about the efforts of many organizations in the promoting of buying Fair Trade and respecting the dignity of workers globally. All of you did a FANTASTIC job. The space looked great and bright. I have done my share of events at church/temple basements, but yours was by far the nicest and brightest of all.” Ana Bermudez, Kiichpan “That's awesome that 500 people shopped! I can tell you the turnout for your event is really encouraging and says a lot about the character of the people who are members of your church. I often have seen people who come to these things who are very disinterested or simply don't understand Fair Trade. All the shoppers I interacted with were very interested and knowledgeable. Even if they didn't know much about Fair Trade, they were very inquisitive, and I had many opportunities to share with them the good work of Fair Trade. Thank you.
