ST. JAMES ACADEMY ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT
It is with great excitement that we
announce the selection of the next
President of St. James Academy.
Tim Wilson, Chair of the Board
of Trustees, has announced that
Archbishop Naumann, in accord
with the recommendation of the
Search Committee, has selected
Sister Christa Marie, FSGM to the
position of President.
Archbishop Naumann stated,
“I am grateful to Mother Regina
Pacis of the Franciscan Sisters of Tim Wilson, Sister Christa Marie and Andy Tylicki
the Martyr St. George for allowing
Sister Christa Marie to apply for the position of President of St. James Academy. Sister
Christa Marie brings a unique blend of qualifications, talents and experiences that I am
confident will serve St. James Academy very well. Most of all, she brings to St. James her
deep faith in Jesus and strong love for His Church.”
Sister Christa Marie is currently serving as the Executive Director of the Shrine of Our
Lady of Guadalupe at La Crosse, Wisconsin. Since assuming the position of Executive
Director in September of 2003, Sister Christa Marie has overseen the construction
of numerous religious portions of the Shrine grounds and, most significantly the
construction of the Church, which is the heart of the Shrine.
On Friday, March 5, Sister Christa Marie was formally introduced to the faculty
and administration at St. James Academy. Sister spent the day at the school and was
introduced to the students at the pep assembly that afternoon.
Mr. Wilson, on behalf of the Board to Trustees, commented, “As we continue to move
St. James Academy forward into the future, we are excited to have Sister Christa Marie
continue the legacy that has already been built in the first five years of the school. Sister’s
experience, combined with the excellent faculty and administration that are part of the
St. James community, will continue our culture of faith and academic excellence that
were the original pillars St. James was built upon.”
Sister Christa Marie will begin her service at St. James Academy during the coming
month of June. Planning is already underway for a St. James community-wide event
to welcome Sister to our family and the Board is excited for you all to meet her in the
coming months.

JENNA BRUEGGER WINS PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP FROM BENEDICTINE
On Tuesday, March 9, Jenna Bruegger, SJA senior, was awarded the Presidential
surprised Jenna at school and told her the news. ere were a total of 220 applicants
from over 35 states who applied for this scholarship. Jenna was one of just five chosen to
receive it, and the only one from the state of Kansas. e Presidential Scholarship is a
four-year, full tuition scholarship.
Josh Bruegger, Mrs. Bruegger, Jenna, Mr. Bruegger
PRAYING AND PLAYING WITH PASSION
e Sophomore Retreat was held on February 11-12. According to Sr.
M. Luka, “is was the best retreat ever at St. James. e students were
truly drawn to God. It was evident in the fact that everyone participated.
e students were so excited to be there and they enjoyed it all the way
through.” Sr. M. Luka also mentioned that at one point the students were
singing so loudly in the chapel, she had to close the door so the prayer
partners were not interrupted! She was very
impressed with the participation level of this
sophomore class.
Adoration was once again the highlight of the retreat. It was very
spiritual and moving. Reconciliation was also available to the students.
ere were seven priests who were there to hear confessions, which
was a good thing because approximately 170 students took part in
this Sacrament.
A special thank you goes out to all the faculty and staff who made this retreat so memorable by
giving their time and sharing their love of Jesus with our students.
JOHN MUEHLBERGER SPEAKS AT YOUTH RALLY
John Muehlberger, Dean of Students and Head Varsity Football Coach at St. James, spoke at
the Archdiocesan Junior High Youth Rally at Prairie Star Ranch on February 27-28. He was
joined by Aquinas football coach Mike omas and Miege football coach Tim Grunhardt.
Close to 800 seventh and eighth graders from around the Archdiocese were in attendance.
John was asked by Dana Nearmyer, Director of Youth and Young Adults for the Archdiocese, to
speak at the rally. e three coaches centered their talks around a “locker room” theme, as if they
were speaking to their team at half-time. ey spoke about how to live out your faith each day.
ey had the opportunity to speak with a group of boys first, then girls. Coach omas began
the talk speaking about persistence. Coach Grunhardt spoke about momentum and Coach
Muehlberger spoke about character. Coach Muehlberger challenged the kids to take what they learned home with
them so they could live it each and every day. Coach Muehlberger commented, “It was a successful event. It was great
for the kids to see all three high school coaches in a different light, away from the football field.”
Everyone seemed to enjoy the rally. Even the parents were impressed. One parent in attendance wanted to know if the
three coaches would be open to speaking again to the youth in Missouri. I guess we will have to wait and see!
MARCH FOR LIFE
By: Molly DiGiacinto, Junior at St. James
is year I was fortunate enough to attend the March for Life in
Washington D.C. I was accompanied by nineteen St. James Academy
students and adult sponsors, as well as thirty-four other students and
sponsors from a variety of Catholic schools. I was very excited to attend
this event, but had no insight into the profound affect it would have on
my faith and spirituality. I was provided the opportunity to gather with
people of all ages, from all areas of the United States, for the common
goal of protecting the sanctity of life. I was impressed repeatedly with
the importance of faith, as well as the importance of not judging others. Women who had undergone abortions
presented their stories to thousands, relaying the horrors and lifelong effects of their decisions. I felt compassion and
awe for these women, their growth in faith, and God’s undying love for all.
I was overwhelmed with a renewed hope for mankind during this experience. It was uplifting to see thousands of
people sharing the same goal, supporting life, and acknowledging that the continued fight for life will impact change.
I heard countless times that it is us, the teenagers, who affect our country and the future. ese are words that will
remain forever with me, providing motivation to protect life, fight abortion, and change the country. I feel a great sense
of responsibility to continue to spread this message. I am very thankful to the St. James community, as well as my
parents, for supporting my participation in the March.
SISTERHOOD RETREAT
By: Maggie Cunningham, SJA Junior
e All Girls Retreat was all about establishing a strong sisterhood at
St. James Academy. It gave us a chance to get away from all the stress in
our lives and an opportunity to get to know other girls at St. James.
A few senior girls spoke about various topics, such as: gossiping and
judging, dealing with stress, modesty, marriage, inner beauty, the perfect
man and how to find God in your relationship. eir talks were like
final words of wisdom from the seniors. ey all had really great insight
on the topics they spoke about and I really feel like I learned from their
words. We also had the opportunity to share our thoughts in small
groups. I had a lot of fun with my group and I got to know new people.
Later in the evening, we participated in a scavenger hunt. Our small groups were our teams and we had to do certain
things around the academic wing. Some items on the list were: take a picture of your team doing a pyramid, take a
picture of your team making a heart only using their hands, find a wedding picture in a wooden frame and many other
crazy things. After the scavenger hunt we went into the chapel and had adoration. You could really tell that all of the
girls were getting into the adoration. e Holy Spirit was really present.
e All Girls Retreat was a great experience that I’m grateful I got to have. It was a lot of fun and it was the perfect
excuse to get away from the boys.
level considering it’s their first time. Now that our swimmers have had a
taste of State competition, I am looking forward to helping the team develop
the commitment to do even better and qualify even more swimmers next
year and each year thereafter,” she commented.

LET’S DANCE!
On Saturday, January 23, our St. James Academy Spirit Team hosted their annual SJA Winter Cheer and Dance Clinic.
e under gym was filled with 66 giggly girls ages kindergarten through sixth grade. Participants learned the SJA Fight
Song routine, a short Hip – Hop dance choreographed by the SJA Spirit Team, and two sideline chants. e Spirit Team
had dinner with the girls, led them in prayer, danced, cheered, and enjoyed doing the “girl thing” all night long! Everyone who
attended the clinic was invited back to perform on January 29 during a Varsity home basketball game. e evening was filled
with fun, fellowship, and lots of laughter. e Spirit Team intentionally tried to create an atmosphere of faith and charity, in
hopes of passing on their enthusiasm for cheer and dance to our next generation of under Fans.
FEBRUARY/MARCH BRINGS MEDALS TO THE FORENSICS TEAM
On February 20, Taylor Hogan and Anna VanBuskirk medaled at Olathe North’s Forensic
Tournament. Both scored well in multiple events but found their niche in IMPROVISED
DUET ACTING. e duo picked random places and professions out of a “hat” and had to
perform knee-slapping entertainment for four rounds. eir efforts paid off as they brought
home SJA’s first IDA medal.
At Olathe East, our SJA Forensics team added five medals to our 2010 collection. Alex Brisson and Taylor Hogan
medaled just behind freshmen Mary Kate Danaher and Jane Castro in the IDA
(Improvised Duet Acting) competition. In Humorous Interp., Alex Brisson
earned his first individual medal bringing our medal count to eight.
In addition, Cole Feldman’s win earned him a trip to State in May.
Taylor, Mary Kate, Alex & Jane
Jack Bredemann and Cole Feldman each medaled at the Blue Valley Forensics
Tournament. Jack shined in Domestic Extemp and Cole Feldman brought home
another medal in Lincoln Douglas Debate.
After three grueling hours of CFL (Catholic Forensic League) Congressional hearings, Zach Pollom made it to semifinals
in our local national qualifying tournament. He scored well in all of his presentations, but especially shined in
the final ninety minutes of House Chamber debate. Making it to semi-finals in a national qualifying tournament is
another first for our young forensics team.
GIRLS BASKETBALL RECAP
Our girls’ basketball team started the season with high hopes and many dreams.
In their first tournament, they made it to the finals against a very tough Spring
Hill team, which beat them 34-31. After that, they managed to play very well
while getting beat by some very good teams (Ottawa, O’Hara ). ey also were
beaten by 6A Shawnee Mission North team in the semi-finals of the Louisburg
Tournament, but rebounded to take 3rd place due to a great game played
against Belton. e team accomplished so many great things this season. e
most important is the chemistry this team has developed. ey are truly ONE
TEAM. Reaching the #1 ranking in the city for the first time in school history
has made the Lady under so proud. e coaching staff has been so elated with the work ethic of all the girls as
they entered the last month of the season. Unfortunately, the Lady under ended their winning season early playing
against Basehor in a Sub-State game on ursday, March 4.
BOYS BASKETBALL RECAP
e under basketball boys entered the last month of their season riding a five game winning
streak and a record of 11-6 overall.
Sophomore Clint McCullough led the way for the surging under scoring 22 points per game,
along with his 10 rebounds nightly. Senior guard Mike Huppe eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for
his career becoming the first St. James player to enter the “1,000 Points Club.” Mike averaged 17
points per game this year while Junior guard Jonathan Anaewke has provided 12 points per game
since becoming eligible second semester after transferring from Mill Valley.
Anna & Taylor
e under boys basketball team took on Sumner Academy in a Sub-State game Friday, March 5.
Unfortunately, their season ended in a close, overtime game.
