MAKING A CLEANER
AND GREENER MONASH
Clean Up Australia Day is here again so grab your family and friends, pop on your
gloves and help Clean Up Monash.
For the seventh year running, Monash
residents will trek to local parks and
waterways to help remove litter from the
streets in March.
Monash Mayor Stefanie Perri said Clean
Up Australia Day provided a great
opportunity for residents to get out and
make a difference.
“The City of Monash has some of the
most pristine natural areas and we want
to keep them that way,” Cr Perri said.
Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian
Kiernan AO said all Australians should
pull together and do their bit to keep our
land healthy.
“Clean Up Australia Day is a simple
way you can help collect rubbish
and conserve our greatest resource –
Australia,” Mr Kiernan said.
ON THE RIGHT FOOTPATHS
Monash City Council has adopted the last part of its Footpath Trading and Access
Policy, ensuring our busy footpaths are accessible for all.
Council has agreed to introduce the policy into the Mount Waverley, Pinewood,
Clayton and other activity and neighbourhood centres, following several months of
consultation in 2011. Council also agreed to minor changes to the previously adopted
policy to better suit site conditions in Glen Waverley and Oakleigh.
Monash Mayor Stefanie Perri said the adopted policy would give traders, shoppers and
visitors to Monash’s trading precincts a fair go on the footpaths.
“Not only do these changes ensure that we make our busy shopping precincts accessible
to all, but it also brings our footpaths into line with most other municipalities in
Melbourne – making it easier for those who are vision impaired or have a disability,”
Cr Perri said.
The introduction of this policy follows the successful introduction of a Footpath
Trading & Access Policy in Glen Waverley and Oakleigh, ensuring footpath trading is
bought into line with accessibility and disability legislation.
Minor adjustments to the policy in these areas have also been made, which include
reducing the size of the kerb zone and increasing the size of the pedestrian zone and
trading zone in some cases.
In recent years, local governments across Australia have been rolling out new footpath
trading regulations due to legal obligations to comply with legislation in the Disability
Discrimination Act 1992 and Equal Opportunity Act 1985.
The adopted policy will come into effect on 1 July this year in areas other than Glen
Waverley and Oakleigh.
The Footpath Trading and Access Policy can be viewed online at www.monash.vic.gov.au. |m|
