<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Monash</strong>Public Health UnitWhat Businesses Need to Know About <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Safety</strong><strong>Supervisors</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Food</strong> H<strong>and</strong>lers <strong>Skills</strong> <strong>and</strong> KnowledgeVictorian Class 1 & 2 food business need to name someone to be their<strong>Food</strong> <strong>Safety</strong> Supervisor (see last page for exceptions).A food safety supervisor is a person who:Has a certificate or statement <strong>of</strong> attainment which shows therequired competencies from a training provider that is a RegisteredTraining Organisation (RTO), <strong>and</strong>Has the ability to supervise food h<strong>and</strong>ling in the food premises, <strong>and</strong>Has the ability to supervise food h<strong>and</strong>lers <strong>and</strong> give directions ifunsafe food practices are observed, <strong>and</strong>Will ensure that the food h<strong>and</strong>lers know how to h<strong>and</strong>le food safely.The Victorian <strong>Food</strong> Act 1984 requires that a food safety supervisor:Knows how to recognise, prevent <strong>and</strong> alleviate the hazardsassociated with the h<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>of</strong> food at, or from, that premises, <strong>and</strong>Meets an appropriate food safety competency st<strong>and</strong>ard for thebusiness type relevant to the premises, <strong>and</strong>Has the ability <strong>and</strong> the authority to supervise others h<strong>and</strong>ling foodat, or from, the premises <strong>and</strong> ensure that the h<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>of</strong> food isbeing done safely.What does this mean for my business?Every Class 1 & 2 food business that registers, transfers registration,or re-registers must tell the local council the name <strong>of</strong> its <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Safety</strong>Supervisor. That person can be the proprietor, an employee or a personexternal to the business, providing they are able to meet therequirements <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Safety</strong> Supervisor prescribed in the <strong>Food</strong> act1984.If you are opening a new business or your nominated <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Safety</strong>Supervisor suddenly leaves your business, contact council <strong>and</strong> negotiatea timeframe within which your business will appoint a <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Safety</strong>Supervisor who meets all the legal requirements.The minimum competency st<strong>and</strong>ards for the food safety supervisor arelisted in the following table:HLTH125
