provid<strong>in</strong>g labour-sav<strong>in</strong>g technologies <strong>and</strong><br />
public goods <strong>and</strong> services, would enable<br />
women to contribute more effectively to,<br />
<strong>and</strong> benefit more fully from, the economic<br />
opportunities <strong>of</strong>fered by agricultural<br />
growth.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re exists no bluepr<strong>in</strong>t for clos<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
gender gap <strong>in</strong> agriculture, as a wide range<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>puts, assets, services <strong>and</strong> markets are<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>and</strong> the related constra<strong>in</strong>ts are<br />
<strong>in</strong>terl<strong>in</strong>ked. But with appropriate policies<br />
based on accurate <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>and</strong> analysis,<br />
progress can be made <strong>and</strong> the benefits<br />
would be significant. <strong>The</strong> basic pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />
are clear. We must elim<strong>in</strong>ate all forms <strong>of</strong><br />
discrim<strong>in</strong>ation aga<strong>in</strong>st women under the<br />
law, ensure that access to resources is more<br />
equal <strong>and</strong> that agricultural policies <strong>and</strong><br />
programmes are gender-aware, <strong>and</strong> make<br />
women’s voices heard <strong>in</strong> decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
at all levels. <strong>Women</strong> must be seen as equal<br />
partners <strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able development.<br />
Achiev<strong>in</strong>g gender equality <strong>and</strong> empower<strong>in</strong>g<br />
women is not only the right th<strong>in</strong>g to do; it is<br />
also crucial for agricultural development <strong>and</strong><br />
food security.<br />
