The first folding bellows prototype, which
we manufactured at the beginning of the 1950s,
was the HS 200 N for Henschel. In 1968,
we were already producing as many as 5,000
folding bellows. Today, there are over 50,000
HÜBNER folding bellows in use. Worldwide.

Research and development
HÜBNER is developing visions of the future for public transport:
we have developed a vandal-proof fabric, as well as acid and
pressure-resistant rubber hoses for vehicle articulation construction.
When new transport concepts for the future are being developed,
the focus is always on an attractive, environmentally friendly bus
service and its sustainable development. For example, HÜBNER
developed a flexible vehicle concept with a modular structure
(AutoTram ® ) for a study, in cooperation with the Fraunhofer
Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (IVI)
in Dresden and the Designteam D from Karlsruhe. In this bus
system, individual vehicle components can be arranged by means
of detachable articulation systems to form vehicles ranging from
a minibus to a high-capacity vehicle, according to requirements.

We make our customer’s final assembly
process simple and cost-effective.
Our product range includes all the components that are used for
articulation systems. All the components are perfectly adjusted to
one another in terms of technology and design and can be used
for a variety of drive concepts and floor heights.
Our claim
HÜBNER‘s articulation systems are tested especially thoroughly.
We expose all the system components to extreme pressure using
special test rigs. We also perform durability tests in cooperation
with well-known universities and testing laboratories. Our articulation
systems are based on FEM (Finite Element Method) calculations.
Measurements that are taken under extreme conditions throughout
the world serve as a basis for these calculations.
Due to the use of maintenance-free damping cylinders, the
articulation systems are designed for long service intervals.
Our damping systems are available in two versions: standard and
deluxe. This is how we achieve the highest quality standards for
products and service.

The universal articulation system is the most frequently used
articulation system in the world. The advantages are in the simple
and clearly defined connection surfaces, which allow the articulation
to be quickly and simply fitted to the front and rear sections of
the vehicle. The articulation system is available in two versions
that are almost maintenance-free: standard and deluxe. The main
components of the articulation system, such as the bearing,
the articulation control and the damping elements are all easily
accessible. In the event of damage, the individual dampers
can be replaced separately. The combination of the universal
articulation system with an electronic control system is particularly
popular. This system detects driving situations at lightning
speed and can, if desired, intervene in the driving. It also detects
possible sources of error through a continuous self-diagnosis.
A comfortable platform is available for the universal articulation
system, which guarantees particularly easy access to all the
service-related components.
The compact articulation system can be used in all kinds of
articulated buses, as can the universal articulation system. It
is characterised by its compact design, simple assembly and
dirt resistance. The integrated articulation damping element is
maintenance-free and resistant to disruptions. Due to the design
of the articulation, all the movable parts are in an oil bath and thus
run almost without wear. This results in the high maintainability
also enjoyed by the universal articulation system. The SKD 420
is particularly suitable for markets that require uncomplicated,
functional solutions.

The ball articulation system was developed especially for puller
vehicles. It is simple, cost-effective, has a particularly robust
design and is delivered in assembly groups that are ready for
installation. Due to its special articulation bearing, large rolling
motions can be achieved without hydraulic or mechanical
damping – it is the ideal solution in growth markets, in particular.

The heavy-duty articulation system has the same functions as the
universal articulation system, but has been specially developed
for vehicles with high axle loads. With this articulation system, up

We develop and produce damping systems
for all drive concepts and operating conditions
ranging from mechanical damping systems to
electronically controlled, fully diagnostic models.
Maintenance-free functionality
All our systems are maintenance-free and have unique functions.
With redundant damping or emergency damping, our products
are highly safe for passengers and your investment. Regardless
of the articulation system, you can generally choose between
the deluxe and the standard damping system. As a result of the
adaptation of the electrical vehicle interfaces, it is also possible
to switch between both systems for different requirements in the
event of series production.
Computer-controlled articulation systems
HÜBNER supplies articulated bus systems equipped with
microprocessor-controlled electronics to meet the highest
standards of safety and comfort. The control system automatically
calculates the relevant driving situation, communicates with the
engine management and applies the damping behaviour to it.
Individual adaptation
HÜBNER‘s control systems impress due to their simple and effective
adjustment options. Thus, almost all customer requirements in
relation to driving performance and vehicle electrical systems
can be implemented quickly. Our many years of experience with
the adaptation of articulation systems in the most diverse types
of vehicles also help us to satisfy your requirements in terms of
driving dynamics and safety.

POWER
CONNECTION
SYSTEMS
HÜBNER‘s power connection systems are
integrated into the vehicle structure in an
individually optimised way. We place particularly
high importance on certified quality: every set of
wiring can be thoroughly tested on a test rig.
Power connection – perfectly coordinated
Everything can be perfectly coordinated, from the number and
measurements of the wires to their stiffness and arrangement in
relation to one another. As a result, your wiring systems always
participate in all the movements thus reducing wear on the moved
wires to a minimum.
Power connection for articulation systems
With universal and compact articulation systems, it is possible to
route hose and electrical wires flexibly through and around the
articulation without having a negative impact on the floor height of
the vehicle. This means that wires with a diameter of 30 mm can
be routed directly through the articulation. For all other HÜBNER
articulation systems or in the event of high-floor buses, the wires
can also be routed under the articulation.
Power connection in the side area
For the power connection in the side area, the cables, wires and
spiral hosing are designed in such a way that they are optimally
routed for every possible tilt angle of the articulation.
Power connection in the roof area
Power connection systems are frequently installed in the roof
area in low-floor buses. For this, HÜBNER uses the C-shaped
power connection system. This kind of installation allows a
natural movement of the wires and thus prevents movements
that frequently lead to the buckling and bending of hoses. The
separation plates mounted on the front and rear car serve as
a clear interface to the vehicle.
Power connection for hybrid, CNG
and trolley buses
The wires can be routed outside the buses for hybrid, CNG and
trolley buses. The specific influences of UV and the weather are
taken into special consideration. The system can have a very
attractive visual design: we can disguise the wires with side
panels for the folding bellows, which can be individually adapted
to the vehicle design.

FOLDING BELLOWS
Our folding bellows are tailor-made and specially
adapted to the vehicle type and design. All the
folding bellows are manufactured out of specially
coated fabric and can also be manufactured in
different colours upon the customer‘s request. In
addition to this, we provide our customers with a
variety of options for interior design with various
hand rails or platform seating.
Folding bellows made from specially coated
fabric with aluminium frames
HÜBNER combines various elastomer and thermoplastic coatings
to form high-quality folding bellows fabrics. The advantage for
you, our customers, is folding bellows with an extraordinarily high
ability to adapt and an extraordinarily high level of resistance.
Depending on the field of application, our fabrics are equipped
with additional qualities, such as UV stability, resistance to heat
and cold, and high tear, tear-growth and wear resistance. A long
service life and high quality – only first class products guarantee
satisfied customers. This determines the actions and products
of HÜBNER.
Customised folding bellows: translucent
Or coloured
No more standard grey. Focus on colour. You can design HÜBNER‘s
folding bellows in colour or you can use a translucent material,
depending on your requirements. A translucent folding bellows
has a decisive advantage here: when it is used, more light enters
into the articulated bus. This creates a friendly atmosphere in the
bus and gives the passengers a greater sense of comfort.
The articulated buses receive a very individual touch with coloured
folding bellows. One or more colours can be used in the design.
For example, it can match the transportation company‘s vehicle
design. Boost the image of your transportation company with
customised folding bellows from HÜBNER and let the folding
bellows design follow the vehicle design.

Customised folding bellows: consistently implemented corporate design
Folding bellows coverings:
protection and design
Floor and roof coverings specifically developed for this purpose
enable power connection systems to be installed in the floor, side
and roof of the folding bellows. They cover and protect the wires
from the passenger area. We offer a variety of possibilities that
are adapted to one another in terms of design and technology
according to the vehicle design. The coverings are manufactured
out of high-quality folding bellows fabric and optimally correspond
to all the load requirements in these specific areas of the folding
bellows. In addition to the classic interior design, we also design
and manufacture special roof and bonnet coverings for connecting
wire systems in trolley and CNG buses for external attachment.
Folding bellows for monorails and multiarticulation
vehicles
The HÜBNER folding bellows range also offers flexible solutions
for special vehicles, such as double articulated buses or monorails.
We use our know-how to produce the ideal folding bellows
for every area , whether it is a U-shaped design with special
clamping mechanisms, versions adapted to vehicles, special
designs with particular cold and heat insulation or special folding
bellows optimised for rail vehicle components in terms of fire
protection in accordance with the strict standard BS 6853a.
High degree of road clearance
Low-floor vehicles have a very low level of road clearance.
We maximise the distance between the base of the
folding bellows and the street with the flat design of our
articulation systems.
Nevertheless, wear cannot be avoided permanently, even
under ideal street conditions. HÜBNER provides an efficient
solution for any maintenance that may be required with the
exchangeable folding bellows base.

CONSULTATION
When developing an articulated bus, the requirements
for a connection from the articulation to
the chassis are extremely high. HÜBNER works
with you and provides you with calculations and
tests of durability in relation to the overall integration.
Customised designs
On the basis of your diagrams, we develop detailed FE models
with you. Through force transmissions, we test the design, filter
out weak points and develop suggestions for improvement.
It‘s your decision: HÜBNER advises you about various levels of
design up to the complete creation of the connection – as an
individual part, an assembly group or as a 3D model (CATIA V5).
Concepts for connection of front and rear car
We illustrate your requirements for HÜBNER‘s products precisely
and realistically on the basis of FEM (Finite Element Method)
calculations. We pay particular attention to the evaluation and
documentation of the permissible loads.
FEM calculation & durability test
HÜBNER determines the optimal connection to the chassis with
you on the basis of load data and our global database. We design
the connection to the articulation in a 3D system specifically
designed for this.
Test drives to determine strain
HÜBNER relies on test runs under real conditions to verify the
computer calculations that we have performed. By attaching the
loads to the chassis, we test the reliability of our product. We attach
sensors to parts of the design that are under particular strain and
match their data with the results of the FEM calculation. Finally,
we determine the actual strain with test drives. This guarantees
optimum quality and the highest level of safety for you.

New: electrical ramp SKADI ®
With the newly developed SKADI ® ramp, it is even easier for
transportation companies to retrofit their vehicles and service
them if needed. Many ideas and customer requirements have
been incorporated into the development of this new ramp
technology. Designed as a plug and play ramp, this enables the
new SKADI ® to be installed quickly and easily in many types of
vehicles.
What makes our SKADI ® unique is the particularly simple
assembly and the access to the main components. The overall
system is completely preassembled in its own box, control unit
included. This can either be installed inside or attached to the
vehicle as a substructure. After assembly, the ramp system only
needs to be supplied with electricity through a plug. And if servicing
is necessary, both the tread plate and the drive can be dismantled
or exchanged completely without any tools. All this can be done
in a few minutes so that there is almost no downtime.

particular requirements for mechanical characteristics, thermoforming
resistance, surface feel, design and painted surfaces,
HÜBNER develops solutions for you, that are precisely tailored
to meet your requirements.
Another exciting aspect is weight reduction in vehicle construction.
In certain areas, we can perfectly substitute metals with a selection
of our range of materials and then use them as design materials.
Example product: internal covering
Polyurethane RIM offers extraordinarily high design freedom for
complex geometries and surface design: everything is possible
from leather grains to a painted surface with a soft coat effect.
In comparison to other plastics reinforced by glass fibres (GRP),
this procedure manages completely without solvents and styrenes.
The weight reduction of PU glass fibre technology in comparison
to the GRP procedure amounts to almost 25 %. Thus, HÜBNER‘s
moulded parts made from polyurethane are a very good alternative
to metal materials or GRP.
Product example: driver cockpit
With its polyurethane products, the HÜBNER Group satisfies
international fire protection parameters, such as flammability,
the spread of flames, heat emission and smoke emission.
This is of great interest for internal applications, such as driver
cockpits in buses. In this area, we produce the products from

to processing. Customer-specific requirements, such as low
wall thicknesses for large moulded parts, excellent mechanical
properties and extraordinarily good thermal and sound insulation
are satisfied by the material polyurethane with its varied material
properties and processing procedures. We are the specialists
in polyurethane (PUR), providing it as RIM, semi-hard, compact
duromer, integral HR, integral flexible foam and system combinations
for polyurethane (PUR) and glass fibres.

SEALING
What material best provides protection and
sealing for those areas of application This is a
question which HÜBNER‘s internal laboratory
constantly asks itself and which has repeatedly
been answered by a variety of tests in the past
few years. Rubber and silicone products protect,
damp, seal and insulate – from a delicate precision
part to several kilograms of heavy sealing.
For decades, we have successfully processed rubber to create
moulded parts, profiles, frames and rubber-metal compounds for
the full range of application in buses. At the same time, our variety
of compounds covers almost 400 different compound formulas.
We offer competent advice, and design and produce rubber
solutions – from the prototype to series production.
Rubber and silicone moulded parts, seals
We specialise in high-quality moulded parts which we have
developed ourselves and which also meet special requirements.
Our moulded parts are oil, heat and UV resistant and are available
in almost every colour, shape and area of application with weights
from 10 g to 5 kg, depending on your requirements.
For all applications which have to demonstrate elasticity and
resistance to cold and heat or should possess good electrical
insulation properties, we recommend using high standard EPDM
qualities or silicone as the base material.
Rubber-metal compounds
Steel, aluminium, brass and other metals – efficient pretreatment
of the metal guarantees a perfect combination
of the metal with rubber.
The processing is provided for:

Rubber profiles and frames
You can receive HÜBNER rubber profiles with punched-out
and cut-out sections, electrical monitoring, vulcanised parts,
form-vulcanised corners or with pre-heated radii.

• Window seals
• Window frames
• Hatch seals
• Door and flap sealing
• Finger protection profiles with an electrical connecting block
• Damping elements
• Elastic bearing to absorb harmful and disruptive vibrations
For corners on which shearing effects place a heavy burden,
we manufacture rubber frames with injected moulded corners.
This special corner injection moulding technology also connects
hollow chamber profiles and profiles with different cross-sections.

Maintenance
We can provide the complete maintenance of your bus articulation
system upon request. Professional maintenance by HÜBNER‘s
technicians includes:
• Examination, adjustment and, where necessary, replacement,
of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic components
• Lubrication of all bearings
• Removal of impurities
• Minor repairs on folding bellows
• Documentation of work performed
in a comprehensive service report
A training course for your employees can also be offered
simultaneously, if desired.
