Michigan Champions Crowned While the turnout from other parts of the state was disappointing, a good delegation of shufflers from the Laming/Detroit/Pontiac areas filled the prize pot in the Michigan Championships with nearly $7,000 and gave a crowd-pleasing performance to players and fans at Pasquale's Bar in Lansing over the Thanksgiving week-end. Four events were on the schedule. Sher Blessing is the 1991 Women's Champion. Dana Gray is the Michigan Men's Champsion. In the women's singles, Sher Blessing of Rochester, in her first-time-ever appearance in a major tournament, triumphed over the always competitive Delores McDonald of Lansing. Local Dana Gray came out on top of a field of 22 players to take the crown in the men's singles championships. He beat out gentleman Bill Meyer of Sterling Heights, a skilled player and crafty sponsorship buyer. John Myles (better known as "One-Armed John") of Livonia took third place honors, with Lansing's Lee McDonald in fourth. Bernie Sunde and Phil McGrew teamed up to take first place honors in the Michigan Championship Open Doubles. In the open doubles, Bernie Sunde of Madison Heights and Phil McGrew of Union Lake teamed up to take top honors. They beat Lansing's dynamic duo, Lee McDonald and J.R. Lopez. Western Maryland Action The East Coast shufners gathered in the Appalachian foothills in Funkstown, Maryland, at Glenn's Tavern on Nov. 22-24 for a weekend of shuffleboard fun. The weekend started off with glorious 70 degree weather and shirt sleeves, but by Sunday jackets were in order and 30 degree temperatures prevailed. ("Must mean the Winter Board Talk Tournament is on the way, as well as other notable holiday happenings," said Dick Gorman.) Friday night was the draw partner event where 32 players teamed up for the double elimination tournament on the four inhouse boards to compete for just over $1900. The local team of Sam Jones, Boonesboro, and Jim Snyder, Hagerstown, outlasted the rest of the field to take first place and over $1 100 for the evening' Second place was won by Doug Fridley Jr., Waterloo, New York, and Vernon Rohrer, Hagerstown, Md, with third and final money spot to Jack Gardner, Greensboro, Md., and Lonzo Knight, Sharpsburg, Md. Saturday morning was the designated for the bring partner event and quite a few of the better known teams showed up, but you won't see their names in this column this time (they went to the party bracket early, Dick reports). The local favorites showed up at the winner's table and for the second day in a row, Sam Jones took fmt place, only this time his partner was Lonzo Knight. Second place went to John Lukas, Millington, Md. (winner of the previous two bring partner events at Funkstown), and Mickey Mickens, Laurel, New Jersey. Third place was won by the mixed team of Steph McNeil, Rising Sun, Md., and Terry Gem, Queenstown, Md. Fourth spot was taken by Len Dell, Bellcamp, Md., and Chuck King, Dover, Del. Fift!~ pkce went to Johnny GarJner, Greeilsbor~, Md. (Jack's son), and Bob Morrel of Philadelphia. Sixth and final money spot went to Tom Bernhard, Milford, Del., and Scratch Todd, Denton, Md. On Sunday was the open singles and as the tournament ended, Lonzo Knight walked to the finish line with first place money. Second place money went to hard-fighting Len Dell, with third going to owner Glenn Arvin, Funkstown. Fourth and last of the money winners was Lindsay Hall, Baltimore, Md. "It was an exceptionally nice weekend of shuffleboard fellowship and hospitality provided by Carmen and Glenn Arvin More New York Action The Geneva Moose Club in Geneva, New York, hosted its &st ever New York State Interstate Shuffleboard Tournament on Nov. 9-10. It was the ninth overall ISL tourney and went over well as 56 shufflers took aim at $2,900 in prize monies for the two-day event. Sawday was the draw partner event and saw Ken Vanzile Jr. from Pillars in Guilford, N.Y., win his first-ever ISL tournament by teaming up with Dave Fridley from the Dew Drop Inn, Waterloo, to win half of the $1,350 purse. Second spot went to Roy Schreiber from Baldwinsville Moose and firsttime casher Dave Patrick of Pillars. Third place earnings went to another first-time casher, Bob Smith teaming up with Earl (conti&& on page 10) .
