Darrol Salutes Canucks
The Canadian tourney was a great success! We had 10
boards in a huge Army, Navy, Air Force Veterans Association
private club, complete with very good kitchen, a bar and
lounge, and three full-size snooker tables. All the people were
very friendly and hospitable.
I look for this tournament to be a great success annually.
Darrol Nelson, Cheshire, Oregon
Thanks for the great photos, Darrol, and for your kind
words about the Crazy Canucks tournament. We, too, expect
this was just the first of yearly successes for them.
Rick Thanks Shuffler Coaches
I would like to express my thanks to all the people who
have helped me improve my game of shuffleboard.
Most important of all, I thank my dad, Ted (Curt) Curtice.
The list could go on and on, but here are just a few I personally
would like to thank:
Joanie Swenson, Jay Kimble, Lou (Loose Lips) Lusero,
Jim Kennedy, Chuck Kimbourgh, Vern Booth, Bob Brunskill
and Trader Jim Anderson.
I hope that all beginners in the game of shuffleboard can
benefit kom these people as I have. I enjoy playing the game,
meeting the various challenges. It has helped a lot to improve
my game and my attitude.
Also, I would like to thank Jack and Johnna (Mom and
Dad) from the Peanut House (Bellflower) for their support and
for promoting shuffleboard.
Joanie (sister), a personal thanks to you.
Thank you all very much.
Rick Curtice, Lakewood, California
The people you mention, Rick, should serve as an example
to players everywhere. It is people like them, helping beginning
players, who will ensure that the future of sh@eboard is
bright.
Eric Waldman and Jim Gindt, 2nd place doubles.
Thoughts of Reno Tourney From Hospitalized Participant
Here I am the day after Thanksgiving, still in St. Joseph's
Hospital, Orange, California. This is the first Thanksgiving in
over 28 years that Dot and I didn't have dinner at my
Mother's. Mother, age 96, passed away last July. Rather than
feeling sad, I've been thinking more happy thoughts.
I recently was able to participate in The Federation's national
tournament in Reno, Nevada. I am grateful to Cassie
Ritz and Charley Rose, owners of the Till "2" Club in
Bellflower, California. Cassie bought new shirts and also contributed
$100 toward our calcutta in sponsoring my team. I
also want to thank Jolene Lernbke, who was so insh-umental in
promoting and obtaining the quality players we had participating
on our Reno team. I have made the following list of items
that I considered improvements over previous tournaments we
have participated in.
1. Six player team on three boards was much better
than 8 player format in that all players got to
shoot at the same time, making each player feel
more a part of their team, and match.
2. Choosing partners at the start of each match and
keeping the same partner for the entire match
kept the whole tournament flowing better than
changing partners after each game.
3. The hotel contributing money to the pot for each
event made it rewarding for all of us, even those
who didn't win the event, and the hotel not only
gave a special discount rate of $21 per person,
but also a sixth day free with a 5-day purchase.
January 1992 The Board Talk Page 3
4. Allowing participants to join additional events
up to the time of the event.
5. Scheduling enough events that everyone was
made to feel an important part of the tournament.
I was so impressed with John McDermott and his operation
in Reno that I hope to help organize a special league this year
with point money going toward sending teams from Southern
California to next year's Reno tournament.
Tony Bastanchury, Garden Grove, California
We're glad to hear that you're now home and on the mend,
Tony. We add ow salute to Cassie, Charley, Jolene and John.
It takespeople like them to keep our sport going and growing.
To all our ShuMin' Friends:
LongKnox Win at Mann's Place
On Nov. 9 at Mann's Place, Evansport, Ohio, 18 teams battled
for over $2400 in total prize money. Jim Long and Jerry
Knox from Indiana took the first place prize, while Bud and
Fritzi Broka of Bourbon, Ind. took second. Paul Elliot and
Terry Dowell from Warsaw, Ind, finished third, with Gale
Gushman and Terry Wolfrum in fourth.
Mann's Place extends a special thanks to Dale Gushman
for the promotion money added to the purse, and to all the
players who helped make the tournament a big success.
Harvey's Place Hosts Thanksgiving Shootout
The East Coast shuffleboard gang gathered at Harvey's
Place in Street, Maryland, on Nov. 15-17 for their annual
Thanksgiving Shootout. This popular spot just north of Baltimore
in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay provides the
greatest hospitality and facilities for their shuffleboard guests.
This tournament was no exception as Darlene and Harvey
Comer welcomed their weekend guests.
Friday night was the draw partners. Leading the money
winners to first place were Len Dell, Bellcamp, Md. and
Lindsay Hall, Baltimore, Md., long-time friends and shooters
from Baltimore years back. Second place was taken by Wan&
Farris, Dargan, Md., and Chuck King, Dover, Del., with third
and final money spot going to another mixed team of Hilda
Poling, Abbington, Md., and Jim McDaniels, Darlington, Md.
Saturday morning was time for the women's singles, while
some weary-eyed men slept Leading the women to first place
was Wanda Farris, followed in second place by Judy Iseman,
Chestertown, Md., with third and final money spot going to a
local shooter, Debbie (Standiford) Schuler of nearby Conowingo.
Wanda Farris left the tournament to return to Hagerstown
to assist in the delivery of a new niece or nephew.
Saturday afternoon brought out the big teams for the bring
partner event to be played on the four in-house boards. Leading
the way to the money late in the evening were Len Dell
and Chuck King. Second place was won by Dick Goman,
Wilmington, Del., and Poncho Prevento, Port Deposit, Md.,
with third place going to Johnny Gardner, Greensboro, Md.
and Mark Grove, Millington, Md. Fourth place went to Sam
Jones, Boonesboro, Md., and Lonzo Knight, Sharpsburg, Md.
Fifth was taken by Herb Forester, Holrnes, Pa., and Joe Williams,
Ridley Park, Pa., with final money spot sixth place
going to Jim McDaniels and Jim Wallace, Port Deposit.
Sunday at high noon was the scheduled time for the final of
the four events -- the popular East Coast mixed doubles.
Weights flew up and down the boards until Sunday night
when the eventual winners emerged into first place and it was
Judy Iseman and Len Dell taking most of the money. Joyce
Pyle, Church Hill, Md., and Sam Jones took second place
honors and third place went to first-time tournament money
winner Boots Stewart, Abeerdeen, Md. and Chuck King. Final
money spot fourth place went to hostess Darlene Belcher and
Dick Gorman.
"It was a great weekend for shufneboard with Judy Iseman
and Len Dell taking the overall point lead for the weekend
in all three events. The next major weekend tournament is
Michigan Champions Crowned
While the turnout from other parts of the state was disappointing,
a good delegation of shufflers from the Laming/Detroit/Pontiac
areas filled the prize pot in the Michigan
Championships with nearly $7,000 and gave a crowd-pleasing
performance to players and fans at Pasquale's Bar in Lansing
over the Thanksgiving week-end. Four events were on the
schedule.
Sher Blessing
is the 1991
Women's Champion.
Dana
Gray is the
Michigan Men's
Champsion.
In the women's singles, Sher Blessing of Rochester, in her
first-time-ever appearance in a major tournament, triumphed
over the always competitive Delores McDonald of Lansing.
Local Dana Gray came out on top of a field of 22 players
to take the crown in the men's singles championships. He beat
out gentleman Bill Meyer of Sterling Heights, a skilled player
and crafty sponsorship buyer. John Myles (better known as
"One-Armed John") of Livonia took third place honors, with
Lansing's Lee McDonald in fourth.
Bernie Sunde and
Phil McGrew
teamed up to take
first place honors in
the Michigan Championship
Open
Doubles.
In the open doubles, Bernie Sunde of Madison Heights and
Phil McGrew of Union Lake teamed up to take top honors.
They beat Lansing's dynamic duo, Lee McDonald and J.R.
Lopez. Dana Gray added to his weekend bank roll by teaming
up with Saginaw's Chris Passariello to take third place.
January 1992 The Board Talk Page 7
It was an action-packed Sunday afternoon with lots of keen
competition in the mixed doubles event. Cassie Kern of Pontiac
helped Phil McGrew add another first to his record. J.R.
Lopez and Cecil Filko of Lansing took second place honors.
and their family and employees," said Dick. "This time Carmen
was having a little medical problem (we hope by now
that the doctors have been able to help her and she is on the
mend for sure), so Linda Jones and "Peachy" Fravez spent
many hours preparing a complete turkey dinner, including
pumpkin pies, for all participants on Saturday and it was followed
up on Sunday with southern fiied chicken (biggest
pieces I have seen in a long time). The food itself is worth
more than the price of an entry fee at this popular shuffleboard
establishment."
Point leaders for the weekend were Judy Iseman for the
wornen and Lonzo Knight for the men. The next tournament is
scheduled for Feb. 21-23. Call Glenn at 301-739-2559 for
early registration as some events do sell out in advance.
Total prize pot for the weekend was almost $7,000.
Tournament director George WaEr thanks all the great
volunteer help he had to make this annual event a success.
Western Maryland Action
The East Coast shufners gathered in the Appalachian
foothills in Funkstown, Maryland, at Glenn's Tavern on Nov.
22-24 for a weekend of shuffleboard fun. The weekend started
off with glorious 70 degree weather and shirt sleeves, but by
Sunday jackets were in order and 30 degree temperatures
prevailed. ("Must mean the Winter Board Talk Tournament is
on the way, as well as other notable holiday happenings," said
Dick Gorman.)
Friday night was the draw partner event where 32 players
teamed up for the double elimination tournament on the four inhouse
boards to compete for just over $1900. The local team of
Sam Jones, Boonesboro, and Jim Snyder, Hagerstown, outlasted
the rest of the field to take first place and over $1 100 for
the evening' Second place was won by Doug Fridley Jr., Waterloo,
New York, and Vernon Rohrer, Hagerstown, Md, with
third and final money spot to Jack Gardner, Greensboro, Md.,
and Lonzo Knight, Sharpsburg, Md.
Saturday morning was the designated for the bring partner
event and quite a few of the better known teams showed up,
but you won't see their names in this column this time (they
went to the party bracket early, Dick reports). The local
favorites showed up at the winner's table and for the second
day in a row, Sam Jones took fmt place, only this time his
partner was Lonzo Knight. Second place went to John Lukas,
Millington, Md. (winner of the previous two bring partner
events at Funkstown), and Mickey Mickens, Laurel, New Jersey.
Third place was won by the mixed team of Steph McNeil,
Rising Sun, Md., and Terry Gem, Queenstown, Md. Fourth
spot was taken by Len Dell, Bellcamp, Md., and Chuck King,
Dover, Del. Fift!~ pkce went to Johnny GarJner, Greeilsbor~,
Md. (Jack's son), and Bob Morrel of Philadelphia. Sixth and
final money spot went to Tom Bernhard, Milford, Del., and
Scratch Todd, Denton, Md.
On Sunday was the open singles and as the tournament
ended, Lonzo Knight walked to the finish line with first place
money. Second place money went to hard-fighting Len Dell,
with third going to owner Glenn Arvin, Funkstown. Fourth and
last of the money winners was Lindsay Hall, Baltimore, Md.
"It was an exceptionally nice weekend of shuffleboard fellowship
and hospitality provided by Carmen and Glenn Arvin
The Geneva Moose Club in Geneva, New York, hosted its
on Nov. 9-10. It was the ninth overall ISL tourney and went
over well as 56 shufflers took aim at $2,900 in prize monies
for the two-day event.
Sawday was the draw partner event and saw Ken Vanzile
Jr. from Pillars in Guilford, N.Y., win his first-ever ISL tournament
by teaming up with Dave Fridley from the Dew Drop
Inn, Waterloo, to win half of the $1,350 purse. Second spot
1992 National Tour - Southern
California Added
The success of the 1991 Grand Slam National Tour, highlighted
by the best tournament we have ever promoted, the
North American Championships in Reno, has us more excited
about the prospects for the future than we have ever been at
the beginning of a new year.
The 1992 Tour kicks off in the Los Angeles area, March 3-
8, with the West Coast Classic. Greg McFarland and Joan
Swenson are the Tournament Directors for this event which is
being held at the Bicycle Club in Bell Gardens, California. In
addition to having a first class facility, the Bicycle Club is
also the world's largest card room.
The rest of the schedule remains pretty much the same,
with the Michigan Open on Memorial weekend, May 20-25;
The Board Talk Shufflers Reunion returns to the Holiday Inn,
Kulpsville in the Philadelphia area, July 1-5; following that is
the U.S. Open which also returns to last year's site, the
Howard Johnson South Plaza Hotel in Austin, Texas; the 1992
tour will once again finish at the Sands Regency Hotel &
Casino in Reno with the North American Championships,
NOV. 9-15.
Several new classes of competition will make their debut
on the 1992 Tour -- events for Division 11 and Division 111
players. This year's first event, the West Coast Classic, will
feature a new format -- frames as opposed to points -- in the
Division I, II and 111 and Team events, which will allow these
events to be played two out of three instead of single game.
Frames is not actually a new idea. It is actually back to the
future. The frames format was the most common method of
play in the country from 1947 until about 1960, according to
Sol Lipkin of American Shuffleboard.
Because it is our desire to promote tournaments of the
highest possible quality, a couple of changes in policy will be
in place for our 1992 events. It has been obvious to us in
reviewing the financial side of tournament promotion that although
we are closer to breaking even than we were in years
past, there are going to have to be changes for us to continue
this area of our business.
We have agonized over whether to increase the registration
fee and have mixed feelings about doing so. There are many
players who play only in the N.A.S.L. Team and we didn't
think it was fair to them to pay the same registration fees as
the person who is participating in three or four events. Keeping
that in mind, we think that we have come up with a fair
idea and have made the following changes, effective immediately.
There will be a $10.00 per player registration fee for the
team event. The players who want to participate in the
tournament's other events will be charged an additional
$10.00, making the maximum registration fee $20.00.
This change will allow us to continue to improve the
quality of our tournaments by enabling us to provide you with
the type of high quality tournament staff that we received so
many compliments on at our tournament in Reno.
Also, the burden put on our staff to process incomplete or
incorrect entry forms grew to the extent that it became a fulltime
job. For the Reno tournament alone, we issued $1845 in
checks to people who had overpaid. This is nothing compared
to the number of letters, phone calls, and stamps we used
trying to collect the balance owed by people who underpaid.
Therefore, effective immediately, our policy is that any
entry form that is incomplete or incorrect shall be returned to
the person who sent it. We will not hold a spot in the tournament
for anyone without a properly filled out entry form. If
you have any questions when you are filling out your entry
form, please call us; we will be happy to assist you.
Qualifiers
We want to reiterate what we said in the September issue
of The Board Talk in relation to this subject. Because of some
of the problems last year -- qualifiers run for events that were
already full, schedule conflicts with other tournaments, etc.,
spots in our tournaments will not be given to any winner of a
qualifying tournament unless prior written approval has been
provided by The Shuffleboard Federation, Inc.
We are very interested in helping anyone who wants to run
a qualifier in their area. If you would like to run a qualifier in
your bar for any of our 1992 events, please contact us as soon
as possible.
While we are on this subject, we would like to recognize
the excellent work of Tulsa Shuffleboard Association
founders Cliff Goff and E.R. Smith. Through the use of a
series of qualifiers, two six-person teams from the Tulsa area
were able to win a trip -- including air fare, room, and entry
fee -- to the Reno tournament.
This is the type of promotions we would like to see every
league involved in. We are looking forward to the day when
regional and national competitions for N.A.S.L. league
players will be a reality.
We would love to help you promote these types of ideas in
your area. For more information on the N.A.S.L. program,
qualifiers, having a sanctioned tournament in your area, or
Sunday brought 14 teams to challenge for over $1,150 in
cash prizes. Finishing in the winner's circle was the tough-tobeat
team of Dick Losee and Russ Reynolds from Sherburne,
N.Y. Earning second place winnings were Earl Durgan and
"famous" husband-wife team of Arlow and Jane Johnson from
local Geneve Moose favorites, Sherry Bates and Jim Perry,
shooting in his first-ever ISL event.
"Geneve Moose is to be commended for their fine buffet
both days of zitas and meatballs, baked beans, escalloped
Dopey & Mopey Stars of Lafayette Inn Draw Partner
December 7, the day that will live in the memories of a nation,
and the state of Delaware whose birthday is Dec. 7, and
in the memories of Dopey and Mopey. The latter event took
place at Lafayette Inn, Rising Sun, Maryland, at the monthly
first Saturday of the month draw partner event. Dopey and
Mopey were Mopey Hasson, Perryville, Md, and Dave (D----
) Shewbridge, Wlkton, Md., who took first place and most of
the marbles. Second place went to Joe Williams, Ridley Park,
Pennsylvania, and Jim Yank Sr. of Philadelphia. ~hird place
went to Carol Hampton, Charlestown, Md., and John Sinclai.,
Rising Sun.
The day was capped off with a hot buffet for all participants
provided by hosts Pat and Nelson Renzo. "We meet
at this popular 4-board establishment the first Saturday of
every month with anywhere from 25 to 40 players joining in.
Come join the fun at 1 p.m. sharp," invites Dick Gorman.
Mixed Doubles at Lafayette Inn
The second in a series of four mixed doubles tournaments
at Lafayeae Inn, Rising Sun, Maryland, was held on Dec. 8 on
the four in-house boards. The bidding was cautious on the
many good and potential winning teams, reports Dick Gorman.
As the day progressed, Pat and Nelson Renzo treated all
participants to a fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and string
bean dinner, giving the holiday stomachs an early start.
Meanwhile, back to the shooting ...
Traveling from Western Maryland, Wanda Farris, Dargan,
and Lonzo Knight, Sharpsburg, teamed up to take first place
over second place finishers Mary Wagner, Milford, Delaware,
and John Lukas, Millington, Md. Third place went to Judy
Iseman, Chestertown, Md., and Len Dell, Bell Camp, Md.,
with fourth and final money going to Rita Yank, Philadelphia,
and Johnny Gardner, Greensboro, Md.
The next mixed doubles tournament in this four-tournament
series is scheduled for Jan. 5. Call 410-658-9075.
AMATEUR DRAW
We apologize to the players in this event for sccidently
wiping off the bracket board bfore we had a chance to record
the results. The only information we have been able to piece
together is that Woody Cockrum and Charlie Rusch took first
and Betty Brantley and her partner finished second.
We would very much like to recognize the teams in second
through sixth place. If the participants in the Amateur Draw
could take a minute to let us know where they finished, we
would greatly appreciate it. The results will be published in
our monthly advertising.
