aaThe Board Talk is published by George & Donna Wilber, 421 E.Sheridan Road, Lansing, Michigan 48906; phone 517.371 -25.38.Vol. 6, No. 2 February 1989Shuffleboard Familv Meets in Las VegasBy George and Donna WilberWhat's the difference between the amateurs and the prosin The World of Shuffleboard? If we took a poll, probablymost would say "level of playing skill" or "the amount ofmoney won in tournaments." But ask the 250 players from 10states and Canada, plus almost as many spectators, whoparticipated in the Pacific Coast Shuffleboard Association's(PCSA) Shuffleboard Extravaganza at the Showboat in LasVegas, Jan. 12-16, that same question and the majority wouldanswer -- "Amateurs have more fun! "That was clearly illustrated one day during the marathontourney. The eight-person amateur team event was underwayon the six Playfair boards on one side of the big ballroom. Theopen singles finals, the women's singles semi-finals, and thebeginning of the open doubles were happening on the sixAmerican boards on the other side. No walls separated the two--just a roped-off, highly-travelled aisle that led to the bar.LET'S ADD SOME CLASS to this shufleboard event andPCSA ofjcials Joe Muniz, Lisa Taylor, Lou Lusero and PaulWeber did just that.250 amateurs and pros gathered at the Showboat in Las Vegasto complete on six Plajfair andn six American boards for atotal pot of over $78,000.The audio and visual differences between the two sideswcrc obvious. On the amateur side, the gallery rose andshouted words of encouragemcnt and approval with everyshot. On the pro side, tense silence prevailed as the playerspainfully concentrated on every shot and the small gallery, made up mostly of spouses and bidders, agonized with eachstroke and kept the same respectful quiet as polite major golftournament audiences do.A red check heremeans your subscriptionhas expired. Renew today!'There were 22 teams entered in the amateur event. That's 176 players plus some subs, the most participating insuch an tournament in a lot of years. Both amateurs and proswere enthusiastic about this particular event.Billy Chiles of California, a pro in every sense of theword, in playing skill and demeanor, said: "It's a great thingfor the amateur players. Before this event, many of thementered the open doubles simply for the opportunity toparticipate and they were intimidated by the pros they had toplay against. With the amateur event, they're playing withtheir friends and competing against people with the same levelof playing skill and experience. They're not intimidated, theyhave a great time and, most important, they have a chance towin."Peggy Richards of Arizona, who stands with one foot onthe amateur side and the other on the pro women's side, hadwords of praise for the event, along with some constructivecriticism:"The amateur team evcnt was great! I enjoyed theenthusiasm, the cheering, the atmosphere. But I found itvery difficult to make the transition from the amateur event tothe professional women's event. Playing 24 hours a day takesa pound of flesh I'm not willing to give again. I think there. should be a big national amateur tournament. That's where(continued on page 4)

We're sure Doc and Megan will appreciateyour message.1, itravel all the way from Texas to Las Vegas and stay severaldays, especially with the temptations along the way. This year has been as good as last year's was not! Theorganization and hard work was evident and was very muchappreciated. The Pacific Coast Shuffleboard Association, TheShuffleboard Federation, The Board Talk, and all of theorganizers and participants deserve a lot of credit for thissuccess. It is the beginning of a new horizon of recognitionand acceptance of the shuffleboard game on a national levelthat many of us have wanted and worked towards for manyyears. Our only question is: "Why aren't our San Antonioplayers as good in Las Vegas as we are in San Antonio?" Mustbe our tight collars or could it be the competition?Let's let this be the first of many more great shuffleboardextravaganzas! The San Antonio GroupWe say "amen!" to that! We're sure your words will mean alot to all the people who invested so much effort into makingthis event a success. And don't feel alone. Our team didn'tplay as good in Las Vegas as they do in Lansing, either.Maybe it's the altitude.A Salute to LouI would like to extend my personal thanks to Lou Luseroof the P.C.S .A. for his efforts to take care of the players in theopen doubles at the recent Las Vegas tourney. There wereabout a dozen players who played all night Sunday and wellinto Monday afternoon. About 5 a.m. on Monday, Lou, whoalso had not been to bed and was very tired himself, got on thephone to the kitchen. The next thing we knew, Lou wascarrying in hot coffee, doughnuts and sandwiches for us.All of us were so tired that I do not know if anyoneremembered to thank you, Lou. I know we all appreciatedyour efforts and I would like to thank you on behalf of all ofus who were still standing.John McDermott, Southfield, MichiganLou always seemed to be there when something was needed,no matter what time of day or night. We're sure he willappreciate your salute, John.A Salute to the Shuffleboard ExtravaganzaLast year, the San Antonio, Texas, shuffleboard groupbrought two teams to participate in the Las Vegas amateurtournament. We were sorely disappointed and wrote a letterexpressing our sentiments. After all, it isn't inexpensive toThanks from U.S. Open OrganizerOn behalf of the 1988 U.S. Open Shuffleboard Toumament,I want to thank all the individuals who participated, whoworked during the tournament, and the sponsors who helpedmake it possible. Because of your help, it was a success!

Page 4 The Board Talk February 1989Shuffleboard Family Meets(continued from page I)this sport all started -- with the amateurs. That's where thepros started. There's a place for both. There's isn't a one of theamateurs who wouldn't have loved watching the showcaseperformance of Bill Melton and John McDermott in thesingles finals. But few of us had that opportunity because wewere playing."Amateur Kathy Morgan of Michigan, a member of thecrowd favorite "Eighties' Ladies" team made up of playersfrom Ohio, Indiana and Michigan, put it all into perspective:"Even though we got beat, we're going home winnersbecause of all Ihe wonderful people we've met from all overthe country. They were so friendly and gave us so muchsupport. We just had a great time. Winning is nice but youcan't put a price tag on all the friendships you make at anevent like this! "in Las Vegasand Jim Allis of Washington shared fifth and sixth placehonors.STAR OF THE SHOW -- Lisa Taylorpresents open singleswinner Bill Melton of Oklahoma his first place plaque. Thefinals were a crowd-pleasing "showcase" of professional play. And the winners were ..... the Rainbows of Oregon whofound that pot of gold at the end of it -- over $600 per playerfrom the entry fees and auction. Members of the No. 1 amateurteam were: Jolene and Roy Lembke, Bruce Wechter, TedWhite, Georjean Monnarez, Gar Malde, Marv Calhoun, DickFreer, Don and Judy Campbell.Taking second place honors was the Corporate Image ofTexas, with the Corner Tavern of Washington in third spot andAmato's of California in fourth. The Southern CaliforniaAlley Cats and the Las Vegas 15 took fifth and sixth places.MeIton Wins SinglesA lively crowd of bidders, and those who wished theyhad the bucks to get in on the action, made for an excitingsingles auction. There was a field of winners in this competition. With the exception of the ailing Darrol Nelson ofOregon, they were all there to collect their ShuffleboardFederation top 10 monies and plaques for the 1988 pro tour. Infact, 20 of the singles' 32 entries were on the Federation'syear-end top 25 in the final point standings, sending theauction pot soaring to over $27,000.The exciting down-to-the-last-puck finals of this evefit,as Peggy Richards so aptly described, was a "showcase" ofprofessional play with Bill Melton of Oklahoma prevailingover John McDermott of Michigan.Another Oklahoma great, Sam Summers, finished thirdwith Ted Zariphes (owner of Ted Z's Best Little Wherehouse)of California in fourth. Hal Perry of CaliforniaDanke Takes Women's TitleSHARING TOP BILL-ING in the "showcase"was John McDermott ofMichigan, who doesn'tlook too unhappy as heaccepts his second-placeplaque from the lovelyLisa. The PCSA wins the "crown" for attracting the mostwomen for that gender's singles event, at least since we'vebeen in business. Twenty-four entries, with more standing onthe sidelines waiting for someone to drop out, participated inthis exciting event and brought a healthy $6,600 into theauction pot. 9The formidable Chris Danke of ~alifornia, whofearlessly spans the gender gap by participating in open eventswhere a large majority of participants are male, ended upwinner. She beat the tough but tired Cheryl Collins ofMichigan, who also was a member of the "Eighties' Ladies"amateur team. Chris and Diana Hagen of Texas were the onlywomen not allowed to enter the amateurs.Taking third place honors was Deb Somers (also an"Eighties Lady) of Indiana. Fourth place was earned byBrenda Moore of Texas. Peggy Richards of Arizona and GailCrane (another "Eighties Lady) of Michigan finished fifth andsixth.

February 1989 ,The Board Talk Page 5ONE TOUGH LADY --Chris Danke of Californiaproved her prowess on theboards by beating thetenacious Cheryl Collinsof Michigan for first placein the women's singles.unbeatable combination against such toughies as JohnMcDermott and Sam Summers, Donny Cox and GlenDavidson, Dave Williams and Bill Melton. Chuck Norris --well-known in the Great Northwest, but not a regular contenderin nationals. A.Z. Turnbo, great in his day, but wasn'tthat yester-day?It took the full three games for the "Big Bs" to beat theunranked Nonis and "has-been" Turnbo. And the real winnerswere the people who stayed to watch this great match.Bobby and Billy Team Wins DoublesIf professional means playing and winning under themost challenging conditions, that means the finalists in theopen doubles event really earned their titles. As the undefeatedteam of Billy Chiles of California and Bobby Voorhis ofIndiana struggled to take two of three from challengers A.Z.Turnbo of California and Chuck Norris of Oregon, the galleryof nearly 500 had dwindled to less than 50. All around them, walls were being torn down, boards dismantled and loaded, vacuum sweepers whirring, workers clearing the area andsetting up for the next paying customers, and Showboatrepresentatives hovered over the action, hesitant to disrupt thebig event, but aware of their upcoming commitment onlyhours away.Despite these negatives, the show put on by the finalfour made those who stayed behind glad they did. The fourwere not the favorites of bidders in the auction. Bobby andBilly were recognized as tough contenders, but not as anDON'T WORRY, BY HAPPY -- Seldom will you see theserious Billy Chiles of California smile this broadly. But whenyou're paired up with a Hoosier like Bobby Voorhis, who canplay as hard as he parties, why not laugh all the way to thebank?LETS WORRY 'EM -- Giving the undefeated ChilesiVoorhisteam some moments of worry were the tough combo of ChuckNorris, Oregon, and A.Z. Turnbo, California. They game thesmall audience that remained on Monday a real bonus.Other winners were Eric Waldrnan of Montana and A1Pease of Washington in third; John McDermott of Michiganand Sam Summers of Oklahoma in fourth; Leroy Ledford andFred Thumann of California, Howard Mouton of Texas andHal Perry of California in fifth and sixth places. An "Old-Timer's" ViewpointAmong the huge gathering of spectators at the PSCAShuffleboardExtravaganza was an "old-timer" who viewedthe action a little differently than a player participating inhisher first big-time tourney. PeeWee Ramos of California isauthor of the "Ramos Rules" that many establishments stillfollow in tournament play. His rules were one of the firstefforts to establish uniformity in shuffleboard play.PeeWee, who started playing over 40 years ago, gave thetourney high marks for bringing new people into competition. On the constructive criticism side, he said more officials areneeded for a tournament of this size. No player, he said, should ever wax their own board or even mark up their scores."That's an official's job," he said. "Everyone should go inequal and come out equal."Over those 40 years, PeeWee has seen the sport ofshuffleboard die twice. Why? He believes it was becauseplayers, board owners, manufacturers and suppliers wereinterested only in dollars. They all took from the game anddidn't give anything back to make it live. He hopes thatdoesn't happen again. We asked PeeWee about the possibility of an "Old-Timers' Tourney." He gave it a lot of thought before heanswered.(continued on page 6)

Page G The Board Talk February1989Shuffleboard Family Meets in Las Vegas(continued from Page 5)the sport doesn't "die"again. 1"Shuffleboard is a combination of physical and mental. You can watch this tournament and see that. Even the youngplayers, with their physical agility, have mental lapses, andthat makes the difference between winning and losing," hesaid."When you get my age, the mind stays young while thebody gets older. I stand here and watch and imagine I can beatthe best. My mind says that, but my body says, 'Who are youkidding, old man?' It's like a three-legged horse in a race. He's going to be slower, he's going to stumble, and eventuallyhe's going to fall -- and that would be embarrassing. We don'tneed that," PeeWee said. But did he close the door on an old-timers tourney? Notquite. Let's think about it, he said, and get some input fromsome of those old-timers (see ad in this issue and respond)."In the meantime, what the old-timers really need is theopportunity for input," PeeWee said. He believes the shufflersof today can learn from the successes and the failures ofyesterday's players and thereby assure that the sport will notdie again.Who Made It Happen?FOR DISTINGUISHEDSERVICE -- A1 and VonStewart bask in the sharedglory of recognition fortheir years of service toshuffleboard. They werehonored with a plaquefrom the ShuffleboardFederation and a standingovation from players andspectators at the LasVegas tourney.PCSA official Paul Weber hied very hard, throughoutthe tournament, to keep a low profile, even though he was onthe scene from the exciting opening to the bittersweet end. Hewas, in fact, the lone PCSA official left when the Showboat, management hosted the doubles finalists and remaining fans ata kind of post-tourney reception. So we asked Paul who madeit all happen."Lisa Taylor has to be at the top of the list," he said ofJoe Muniz's daughter, who served as the liaison between theplayers and the Showboat. "Nobody could have handled thatjob better than she did. She took all the flack and it was reallyrough at times. She could get a P.R. job anyplace in thecountry and be a great success."He gave accolades to tournament director Joe Muniz forthe countless hours he spent to make the tourney a success, and the constant support of Joe's wife Marvel and daughterJody. And to Lou Lusero who made the amateur event andmore hamen.HE HELPED MAKE IT HAPPEN -- Karl Spickelmier (left) ofCalifornia was one of the key characters in making the PCSAtourney a success. He's shown here collecting his share of thetop ten point standings money from The Shuffleboard Federation'sPhil Skover. He also paid tribute to A1 Stewart of California and BobLewis of Arizona for the "labor of love" in installing andmoving out the boards, and to Playfair and American forfurnishing those boards. He also credited Karl Spickelmier, "who gave up thechance to win" by running the brackets, and Fred Thumann,Eric Waldrnan, Billy Chiles and his son, Eric. He salutedFrank B from Texas, John Fisher, Bubba and Timmy fromAmato's in California, and Andy Brown from Bellflower. He also acknowledged the management of the Showboatfor "doing the best they could under difficult circumstances. We just weren't prepared for the kind of turnout we had," hesaid."An event like this is such a tremendous team effort andI'm concerned about leaving somebody out that should berecognized," said the tired Paul. You'll notice he didn't mention himself. So we will. Will It Happen Again? At one point in the tournament, when all he heard werecomplaints -- and worse yet, his daughter Lisa was getting thebrunt of those complaints -- tournament director Joe Munizsaid, "No way, never again, shuffleboarders aren't ready forthis, I'm retiring, nobody needs this!"

Anyone who hasn't is either pericct or nobodyshowed up. Shufflers are hard to please and are very vocalabout their disatiskation, particularly those who have neverrun a tournament.Joe recognized that and, before the tourney ended, announced that the 1990 Extravaganza will be the week beforethe Super Bowl. Shuffleboard Extravaganzawhich was held last month in Las Vegas. There will be nomention of winners or losers here because we think the wholeWorld of Shuffleboard was a winner. Teamwork within theshuffleboard community made this tournament a success. TheFederation would like to congratulate the P.C.S.A. for havingthe guts to promote an event of this size. There were a fewrough spots but this was their first tournament and we thinkthey did a good job.The Federation would like to thank some of the people whowere responsible for making this event a success:A & M Amusement Service, which since 1959, has beeninvolved with The World of Shuffleboard. A1 was up at thecrack of dawn every day adjusting the boards and under someadverse conditions, had them in good shape by tournamenttime. In June of this year, A1 and Von Stewart will be retiringfrom the shuffleboard business. The Shuffleboard Federation'sJoe Falvey presented them with a certificate of appreciationfor their 30 years of service.American Shuffleboard Co. -- Sol Lipkin and RichardDelfino of American were on hand for the event. AmericanShuffleboard Co. provided six boards for the tournament. They will also be providing six boards for the upcoming 4thAnnual Washington's Birthday Tourney at the DallasFortWorth Airport West Holiday Inn. While they were at the LasVegas tourney, Sol and Dick pledged their continued supportto the Federation. American Shuffleboard is also going to beintroducing a new, improved model which will be availablesometime in the next year.Bruce HaIe, alias Bellflower Bruce, made sure that Georgeand Donna Wilber of The Board Talk would be there bysending a pair of roundtrip tickets. Bruce, like all of us, lookforward to the day when George and Donna can attend all thetournaments.Bob Lewis -- Bob was responsible for the six Playfairboards at the tournament. Over the last year, Bob has boughtover 40 boards for the Phoenix area and has been responsiblefor making it one of the fastest-growing shuffleboard areas inthe country. His second annual Great Arizona Open, copromotedby the Shuffleboard Federation, promises to be oneof the top tournaments of the year (see enclosed ad for moredetails).Playfair Shuffleboard Co. provided six of the boards forthe tourney and are also providing boards for the upcomingHoosier Classic and 3rd Annual Michigan Open. Thanks,Brian. Sorry you couldn't be in attendance.Tavern Sports International -- Mort Luby, publisher ofthis new magazine, was in attendance. Tavern Sports combinescoverage of shuffleboard, pool, darts, pinball and othertavern games and gives them exposure in nearly 50 foreignmarkets. Mr. Luby would like to thank everyone who took thetime to talk with him. The Federation would like to thankTavern Sports for the new exposure they are providing for oursport.Player Policy BoardThe Federation's Player Policy Board met on Tuesday,January 9. We would like to thank Gail Crane, Bob Lewis,

Brenda Moore, Howard Mouton, Hal Perry, Karl Spickelmier, and Bobby Voorhis who came early and donated their time.We also would like to wish Jody Slack, who was not inattendance, a speedy recovery from his broken arm. ThePolicy Board discussed a number of issues. As we are racingthe clock to get this article in by deadline, we will give someof the highlights here, with more details next month.Seeding: Due to the largely negative response to this issue, there will be no seeding in any Federation tournaments in1989.Point Standings: Most of the people who commented onthe point standings expressed a desire to see doubles tournamentscounted. Therefore, effective immediately, in 1989points will be awarded on the following basis: points to betabulated using same formula as singles, and the points to bedivided between the two players.Practice Time: Rule change -- instead of eight weights upand back, 5 minutes will be allotted each player in singles, and5 minutes per team in doubles.Entry Fees: A new minimum of $100 (from the previousminimum of $150) for tournaments on the Pro Tour.Women's Tour: There will be point standings for womenthis year. The start of the Women's Tour and point standingswere decisions made by the Federation. The Policy Board isproviding input until the Women's Policy Board is formed.Although no method has been determined for funding thepoint standings as of yet, they are being tabulated beginningwith the Vegas tourney.Use of Personal Weights: Once again, the Policy Boardvoted unanimously to allow personal weights. The Federationwill, in the future, provide equipment for checking weights.Although no firm decision was made, a penalty of suspensionof one to two years for altering weights was discussed.Host a Federation Tournament for $50The Federation would like to become much more involvedwith local tournaments in 1989. As shuffleboard becomesmuch closer to attaining national sponsorship, the Federationneeds as much ammunition as possible when talking topotential sponsors. This ammunition is provided by ourinvolvement with as many leagues and small tournaments aspossible. With the Pro Tour organized and running smoothly,we are turning our attention to these other areas. To host a Federation-sanctioned tournament, a sanction feeof $50, and your agreement to play by the rules made by theFederation's Player Policy Board, are all that are necessary. Inreturn, the Federation logo will appear on your flyer, TheBoard Talk will give a 10% discount on your advertising forthis tournament, your tournament will be listed in our newCalendar section, and you will receive a laminated copy of theFederation's tournament rules to post near your shuffleboard. If you have any questions about this program, call us collect at313-344-9666.
