be seen in the many wonderful parks, trails and
celebrate a designation as a 2011 Cultural
Capital of Canada. Our services are designed to reach out to
quality experiences for those who visit.
Our programs, services and facilities are all designed to enhance
the quality of life for City residents, promoting a healthy and
active lifestyle. Many services offered in our community and
whom are long serving and very dedicated to the programs they
offer. I want to take this opportunity to thank those volunteers
for their selfless commitments to these important programs in
our community.
As you review this promotional brochure, you will realize that
there is something for everyone where inclusion and active
living are key considerations.
My wish for all citizens of this City during this year of being
designated as a Cultural Capital of Canada is that you all enjoy
happy, healthy times with your families and have a wonderful
For one of our more scenic trails, the boardwalk takes you along the Charlottetown
waterfront overlooking the harbour entrance and the meeting point of the North, West,
and Hillsborough Rivers.
The boardwalk in Victoria Park was completed in 1994 and is one of the most successful
leisure recreation projects in the City of Charlottetown. The Park boardwalk is part of a
larger boardwalk, sidewalk, walking trail system from Confederation Landing Park to the
Victoria Park lighthouse. Much of the boardwalk borders the waterfront. This walking
trail is open year round for thousands of Charlottetown residents and visitors. The
boardwalk is lighted to allow people to enjoy evening walks. This is part of the Routes
for Nature and Health Trail System.
There are sites of historic and cultural significance to be seen along the boardwalk
including the battery Fort Edward, Celtic Monument and Beaconsfield Historic House.
The historic battery, Fort Edward, includes the cannons and powder house. The battery
62
was moved to Victoria Park in 1805. The Celtic Monument is dedicated to the Irish
descendents from the 32 counties in Ireland who settled in Prince Edward Island in the
19th Century. Beaconsfield Historic House is an enduring symbol of Victorian elegance.
Each year, Canadian
municipalities compete to receive
a designation under the Cultural
Capitals of Canada Program,
presented by the Department
of Canadian Heritage. Up to
three communities can receive
this designation annually, which
includes a financial contribution
to support special activities that
celebrate the arts and culture
and build a cultural legacy for
the community by integrating
arts and culture into overall
community planning.
The City of Charlottetown received the prestigious designation in 2011
in recognition of its ongoing commitment to arts, heritage and culture,
and thriving cultural scene and community. In its application for the
award, the city presented a series of initiatives and events that would
unfold in 2011 to celebrate the designation, in line with the objectives
and funding guidelines of the program. Under the theme “Perspectives
2011: Celebrating Sense of Place,” 2011 will be filled with opportunities
to celebrate and learn more about the artists, events and venues that
make Charlottetown what it is today: a vibrant, talented and creative
community, proud of its heritage and of the leading place it occupies in
the Canadian cultural landscape.
