Children’s Service
Funding Crisis
PARENTS of children with a
disability are only too aware of the
need for therapy services and how
important these are to ensure their
child has the best possible
foundations to grow from.
While the League receives
significant Government funding for
children’s services this needs to be
supplemented by the League to
cover the full cost of delivering these
services.
Currently, there is a shortfall of more
than $200,000 in children’s services
which the League has to allocate
from its fundraising efforts, directly
to children’s services.
Funding targets for this financial
year have not been met for a number
of reasons outside of the League’s
control, including increasing costs
such as petrol prices and
competing support for natural
disasters (Cyclone Larry) have
made an impact.
“The League can never be certain
about the amount of money it can
fundraise each year and allocates
funds based on an estimation on
previous year’s outcomes, and the
costs associated with the provision
of therapy and support for clients,”
Mr Milligan said.
“The League needs to raise the
difference in what it costs us to
provide services to clients and what
is received through funding grants
from the Government,” he said.
The League is appealing to
communities to once again
recognise the League when
donating funds to charity.
Funding crisis:
Sunshine Coast clients were recently
affected by teenagers posing as League
fundraisers, collecting funds to keep for
themselves.
Even though the police were involved, the
League fears incidences such as these are
affecting donor confidence, as it
experiences the worst fundraising shortfall
in recent years.
The League needs to raise at least $200,000
by the end of the financial year, to cover
budgeted children’s services costs.
