The main cobbled street in northern Nira<br />
un=inds along the edge of the Caldera, passing<br />
through Nirostefani and Imerovigli, and<br />
ends up at the northern end of the island, in<br />
Oia.<br />
The cable car departs from northern Nira<br />
as =ell, to transport you to the bay of Nira<br />
(old harbour), =here you can take a boat<br />
tour to the volcano and Thirasia island. In<br />
order to return from the bay to the centre of<br />
Nira, you can choose among the cable car or<br />
the donkeys or you can go up the snake-like<br />
steps, for the most venturous of you.<br />
In Nira you =ill find banks, post office, police<br />
department, health centre, pharmacies,<br />
night clubs, super markets, patisseries, shops,<br />
as =ell as hotels, rooms for rent, tavernas,<br />
snack bars and restaurants that satisfy every<br />

Firostefani<br />
As you go north along the main road, you =ill find Nirostefani only 1.5 km<br />
a=ay from Nira. The vie= is eCually magnificent as it is in Nira but the atmosphere<br />
is clearly Cuieter. It is the perfect choice for those =ho =ant to<br />
be close to the intense and cosmopolitan life of the capital, but not in the<br />
heart of it. The distance from Nirostefani to Nira is no more than a 10 minutes<br />
=alk.<br />
There are places, ho=ever, =here you can eat or have a drink, and at<br />
the same time have a vie= of the Caldera. Lalking up the road that passes<br />
in front of the cable car you =ill see a neoclassic building =ith vivid red<br />
colour. It is Retros K. Nomikos Conference Centre, =hich hosts the maPority<br />
of the international scientific conferences that take place in <strong>Santorini</strong> as<br />
=ell as many cultural events. Qou =ill be surprised by the Centre and the<br />
vie= =ill be an unforgettable memory for you, so =e suggest that you visit<br />
the Centre late in the afternoon to experience another sunset from the top<br />

Imerovigli<br />
Imerovigli or the so-called “balcony<br />
of <strong>Santorini</strong>” is the next stop on<br />
Caldera’s eyebro= after Nirostefani<br />
and before Oia. The largest part of<br />
Imerovigli had been destroyed by the<br />
earthCuake of 1956 and its residents<br />
either built houses outside the<br />
Caldera or moved in Athens.<br />
Imerovigli is only 3 km a=ay from<br />
Nira and its intense tourist development<br />
began in the early ’90s =hen it<br />
started to become the ideal place for<br />
couples in love. There are numerous<br />
lodgings =ith traditional architecture<br />
and vie= of the endless blue, as =ell<br />
as s=imming pools in the edge of the<br />

It is =orth visiting the church of Ranagia Kaltese =ith the old =ooden<br />
icon screen and the monastery of Aghios Nikolaos. As the sun sets, the<br />
neighbouring islands of Ios, Sikinos and<br />
Nolegandros are being revealed, making<br />
Imerovigli’s sunset as captivating as the<br />

Kontochori<br />
If you take Nira’s lo=er road to=ards the North, you =ill come to<br />
Kontochori =here you can visit the Nolklore Kuseum of Emmanuel [ignos<br />
and experience the <strong>Santorini</strong> of the past.<br />
Vourvoulos<br />
The village of Vourvoulos is located approximately 4 km a=ay from Nira on<br />
the road to=ards the island’s northern beaches. The village is built amphitheatrically<br />
=ith a vie= of the plain in the north-eastern side of the island.<br />
In Kato Vourvoulos you =ill find the central sCuare =ith the imposing<br />
church of Aghios Efstratios that celebrates its feast day on Eecember 13th.<br />
It is also =orth visiting the beautiful church of Aghios Ranteleimonas.<br />
Karterados<br />
The lo=er road of Nira that goes south=ards, =ill lead you to Karterados,<br />
after 2 km. Rark your car and get ready for a short tour of the traditional<br />
village starting from the “steps of Galaios”, as the locals call them, =hich<br />
are on your left as the road bends. Qou =ill be surprised by =hat there is<br />
to see... Traditional old buildings mined inside the volcanic rock, captain<br />
houses and picturesCue cobbled streets that you can hardly make out from<br />
the main road as they have been constructed along the streambed. There<br />
aren’t many sights to see, but it’s =orth visiting the church of the<br />
Assumption and being at its festival that takes place forty days after Easter.<br />
If you are on the island on August 15th, Poin the festival of the church<br />
Ranagia Kokkini (Saint Kary of the Red) =hich =as given this name as it =as<br />
built =ith red =ine instead of =ater.<br />

Messaria<br />
Kessaria is located at a cross point of <strong>Santorini</strong> and is close (about 4 km) to<br />
Nira, to the port of Athinios, and to the northern beaches and the north-eastern<br />
part of the island. The ne= part of the village is full of life =ith many<br />
shops, =hilst a =alk through the traditional settlement =ill take you back in<br />
time, =hen Kessaria =as the centre of the island’s industrial development.<br />
There you =ill find the remains of the imposing facilities of the<br />
KarkeOinis knitting factory, as =ell as the Saliveros and KarkeOinis mansionsr<br />
dome-shaped houses built into the volcanic rock, picturesCue cobbled<br />
streets, many churches and the restored Argyros Kansion that evidences<br />
the glory of its time.<br />
Vothonas<br />
After Kessaria you =ill find Vothonas. It is =orth visiting this village in order<br />
to admire the distinctive folk architecture. Kany buildings are built into the<br />
volcanic earth of a large gorge. These buildings apart from being cheap to<br />
construct, they also offered shelter from the =inds and the pirates. Rark<br />
your car for a =hile and cross over the river and the traditional little road<br />
on the river bed, in order to discover the church of Ranagia Trypa =hich is<br />
situated high up on the rock.<br />
Monolithos<br />
Konolithos is located near the airport of <strong>Santorini</strong>, 9 km a=ay from Nira. It<br />
is a Cuite peaceful settlement =ith many hotels and lodgings. It has a =ell<br />
organiOed long beach =ith smooth black sand and particularly shallo= =aters,<br />
a lifeguard and a playground. The =aters deepen gradually, but if you<br />
=ish to s=im =ithout touching the sea bottom, you =ill have to s=im a lot.<br />
The beach usually is very cro=ded since it’s the nearest beach to Nira connected<br />
=ith the local bus transportation net=ork. Eon’t =orry, ho=ever.<br />
There is plenty of room for everyone. Also, in Konolithos, you =ill find the<br />
only tomato factory that is still operating in <strong>Santorini</strong> and belongs to the<br />
Association Cooperatives of Theraic Rroducts SantoLines.<br />

Kamari<br />
The cosmopolitan Kamari is 10 km a=ay from Nira. There is al=ays life, as<br />
it accommodates the maPority of the charter passengers that inundate the<br />
island from Kay to September. It is =orth mentioning that Kamari is of<br />
great historical importance, as in Kesa Vouno, the ruins of the ancient<br />
Thera =ere discovered - a city that =as the only urban centre of the island<br />
until the expansion of Christianity.<br />
Kamari has a =ell organiOed beach that stretches in many kilometres and<br />
is a=arded =ith a blue flag. It has smooth black sand, playground, =ater<br />
sports, diving centre and a lifeguard. Near the rock you =ill see the arch,<br />
the once Customs, =here the most daring ones =ill find it a good place for<br />
diving. Not far a=ay, you =ill see the<br />
ascetic residences, natural caves<br />
found inside the rock or small buildings<br />
that ascetics used in order to retire<br />
since the late 17th century.<br />
Hotels, travel agencies, cafeterias,<br />
beach bars, vivid night life and numerous<br />
choices for food make up the<br />
image of Kamari.<br />

Exo Gonia - Mesa Gonia<br />
Exo Gonia is a small, peaceful and traditional village lacking tourist infrastructure,<br />
built at the rear of Ryrgos. It is located 12 km a=ay from Nira.<br />
Qou should visit it and =alk through its cobbled streets. Admire the neoclassic<br />
mansions and more than ten ruined =ineries that =ere full of life before<br />
the earthCuake of 1956.<br />
Eonvt forget to visit DArt SpaceD (see page 140), the Antonis Argyrosv visual<br />
arts centre, =hich since 1830 =as operating as a =inery and a distiller<br />
of raki, and had the first facilities for tomato processing. At the restored<br />
rooms of the museum you =ill find exceptional =orks of art. Art Space still<br />
operates as =inery as =ell. In Exo Gonia you =ill also find the Artemis<br />
Karamolegos Linery (see page 156) and on the coast the Gaia Linery (see<br />
page 152).<br />
Go to Kesa Gonia (7.5 km from Nira) once a great centre of =ine production.<br />
Nollo= the signs from the main road to=ards Kamari and then turn<br />
right. Qour first stop is in one of the oldest =ineries of the island, Qiannis<br />
Roussos =inery =hich operates since 1836. Taste the famous local labels in<br />
the =inery’s beautiful traditional yard under the shade of the trees. Not far<br />
from Roussos =inery, you =ill find another old =inery (since 1903) the<br />
Estate Argiros (see page 154). Tour the canavas, seiOe the opportunity and<br />
discuss =ith the =ine producer, and don’t forget to taste the famous<br />
Vinsanto he produces. [eave your car for a =hile and =alk through the traditional<br />
settlement of Kesa Gonia. The deeper you go into the village, the<br />
more controversial the landscape becomes, combing images of dereliction<br />
and civiliOation. !eautiful picturesCue churches and fe= traditional houses<br />
are among the ruins that the earthCuake left behind. As you go further up,<br />
the vie= of the village, of Kesa Vouno and of the coast line becomes more<br />
beautiful, especially at nightfall. Go back to your car and follo= the road to-<br />
=ards the church of Episcopi of Gonia, =hich is Cuite close to the village.<br />
The church =as built in the late 11th century and is an important !yOantine<br />
monument. Episcopi is one of the fe= churches =ith tiles and it offers a<br />
magnificent vie= of the eastern side of the island.<br />

top of the fortress stands the castle (Kasteli) that =as ruined from an earth-<br />
Cuake, almost half a century ago. Until then, approximately 70 families lived<br />
=ithin its =alls.<br />
It is recommended to visit the Icons and Relics Collection that houses<br />
hagiographies, =ooden sculptures, embroideries and other items of ecclesiastic<br />
use mostly dated back to the 17th and 18th century. In the village<br />
you =ill find more than 40 churchesr among them is the =ell kno=n<br />
Theotokaki of Koimisis built in the 10th century and Ranagia’s Eisodia or<br />

If you visit the island at Easter - and =e undoubtedly suggest you to do<br />
so - you should not miss the impressive ceremony of epitaph =here the village<br />
is filled =ith hundreds of lightened tin cans and, from far a=ay gives<br />
the impression of a burning village! Nurthermore, on Easter Sunday, locals<br />
have the custom to hang yudas and burn him in the village’s sCuare along<br />
=ith fire=orks, roasted lambs and lots of =ine.<br />
The settlement is inhabited by more than 700 residents. The region has<br />
been developed during the last fe= years and besides the local tavernas and<br />
restaurants that provide very good food, you =ill also find cafeterias, hotels<br />

Megalochori<br />
Qou =ill find Kegalochori on the =ay to the beaches of Rerissa, Rerivolos,<br />
Vlychada and Red !each in the south of the island, 9 km a=ay from Nira. It<br />
is a very beautiful village that remains still unspoilt from tourist activities.<br />
[eave your car and =alk through it. Admire the cobbled streets, the yards<br />
that are full of flo=ers, the tidy houses and above all the fine bell to=ers of<br />
the churches that pop up harmoniously in the landscape.<br />
The settlement is built in the bed of a stream and in front of it stretches<br />
a valley =ith vineyards. It has almost 300 permanent residents, most of<br />
them farmers =orking in the cultivation of the plenty vineyards, tomatoes<br />
and barleycorns.<br />
In the centre of Kegalochori stands the Gavalas =inery (see page 158),<br />
=hereas out of the village you =ill find the !outari =inery (see page 148).<br />
Nor those of you =ho like adventure, =e suggest a visit to the remote<br />
beaches of Caldera, Rlaka and Thermi that =ere named after the churches<br />
Ranagia Rlaka and Christ in Thermi. There is no access by car and therefore,<br />
=e recommend you to =ear sports shoes, a hat and to have =ater =ith you.<br />
It is also =orth admiring the sunset =ith the vie= of Ralea Kameni, Nea<br />
Kameni and Thirasia islands.<br />
Emporio<br />
Nollo=ing the road to=ards Rerivolos and Rerissa beaches you =ill find<br />
Emporio, the largest village of <strong>Santorini</strong> =ith approximately 3.000 permanent<br />
residents. It is 12 km a=ay from Nira and for many years it =as the<br />
trade centre of the islandr to that probably o=es its today’s name<br />
(Emporeio is the Greek =ord for Trade). According to another assertion,<br />
Emporio took its name from the German =ord Neubrg, =hich means ne=<br />
to=er and it refers to the Goulas castle.<br />
Emporio is a traditional village =ith distinctive folk architecture. Goulas<br />
and Kasteli still bring in memory the Venetian rule age. Goulas is the sCuare<br />
medieval castle in the village entrance and it =as Ratmos monastery glebe.<br />
In its entrance you =ill see the typical construction =ith the pots =hich<br />

is Aghios Rolikarpos.<br />
Kasteli is one of the five<br />
typical fortress settlements<br />
of the after !yOantine period<br />
of the island. Its =alls<br />
are the external =alls of<br />

communicate from their<br />
roofs and Ralea Ranagia or<br />
Ranagia Kesani stands in<br />
the centre of the fortress.<br />
The church is dated to the<br />

entering the village there is the small church of Aghios Nikolaos<br />
Karmaritis built upon an ancient sacred of the 3rd century !.C., an offering<br />
to the goddess Vasileia.<br />
Go up to the hill of Gavrilos, =hich is considered archaeological Oone<br />
due to the !yOantine period ruins and admire the eight =indmills and the<br />
vie= of the rest of the island. The =indmills are historical listed monuments<br />
from the early 19th century and they testify the traditional occupation of<br />
that time. Nurthermore, carved tombs of the Hellenistic period =ere found<br />
in the limestone rock in the area of Vlychada. One of them is kno=n by the<br />
name Ehentra =hich means viper, due to the carved shape of a snake found<br />
on the rock. In Emporio you =ill find many shops for tourists, ATKs, super<br />
markets, a post office, cafeterias, tavernas, a pharmacy and a peripheral<br />

Perissa<br />
The beach of Rerissa is located in the southeastern side of the island, 13 km<br />
a=ay from Nira. !eside the rock you =ill find the Old Christian !asilica type<br />
church of Aghia Eirini, dated to 6th century. Rerissa is one of the most developed<br />
and popular seaside resorts of the island along =ith Rerivolos and<br />
Kamari. The sea =aters are deep and clean =hile the beach has black sand.<br />
It is a settlement full of life during the summer months. A great number of<br />
Greek and foreign tourists visit the village, enPoying the comfort of a =ellorganiOed<br />
beach that provides =ater sports and a =ide range of choices concerning<br />
accommodation, eating and entertainment. There is also a beach<br />
camping site =ith natural shade.<br />
The church of Timios Stavros is situated in Rerissa’s sCuare and it is the<br />
largest church of the island =ith a great festival on the 14th of September.<br />
In the sCuare you =ill also find the Kineral and Nossils Kuseum that belongs<br />
to the Cultural Association of Thera. If you look in the rock you =ill see<br />
Ranagia Katefiani, a small church standing up there by it<strong>sel</strong>f. Its festival is on<br />
the 8th of September.<br />
Perivolos - Aghios Georgios<br />
Rerivolos beach is the natural extension of Rerissa. There you =ill find an<br />
organiOed beach of many kilometres that as a=arded =ith a blue flag.<br />
Rerivolos has black sand or small pebble and cool deep =aters. It has the<br />
most popular beach bars, restaurants and fish tavernas.<br />
!each bars =ith loud music, team sports and =ater sports create a party<br />
atmosphere all day long. Aghios Georgios is the next stop after Rerivolos,<br />
ho=ever, =ith a Cuieter atmosphere. There a part of the beach that it is not<br />
covered =ith sun umbrellas, yet.<br />

Akrotiri<br />
Akrotiri’s settlement is in the south=estern and most distant edge of the island,<br />
15 km a=ay from Nira. Akrotiri became particularly famous the ancient<br />
city that =as discovered buried under the volcano’s ashes by the =ell<br />
kno=n archaeologist Spiros Karinatos. His =ork is being successfully continued<br />
by Rrofessor Christos Eoumas. Nrom those settlements that have a<br />
vie= of the Caldera, it is the most recently developed and the less spoilt by<br />
tourist interventions.<br />
Euring the last fe= years many hotels and lodgings have been built to<br />
serve the needs of tourists =hose number is constantly gro=ing, as they<br />
seek for tranCuillity in the still virgin side of the Caldera. Nrom Akrotiri you<br />
can go on foot to the Red !each or take the boat to the Lhite !each. Kesa<br />
Rigadia, Kampia and from the Caldera’s side, Apothikes and Gialos, are<br />
other beaches for s=imming. There is also a Venetian castle in Akrotiri that<br />
=as shattered by the big earthCuake and it is =orth paying a visit. There<br />
may not be enough shops and a =ild nightlife, but you =ill definitely find<br />
good food. Qou =ill find tavernas in Akrotiri’s port, in the centre of the village<br />
and on the road to=ards Naros (lighthouse), =hich you should definitely<br />
visit. Nrom there you =ill be able to observe the figure of an Indian, up<br />
in Kavro Vouno, that looks so natural as if it had been carved by a talented<br />
sculptor. According to the testimonies of local residents, this figure had<br />
been discovered by Spiros Karinatos as none had noticed it until then.<br />
Either in the morning or in the afternoon the vie= of the endless blue and<br />
the rest of the island, from the lighthouse, is magnificent and the sunset is<br />
like a dream. In the area you =ill also find the churches of Aghia Theodosia<br />
situated in the castle’s entrance, of Aghios Epifanios, of Aghia Triada and of<br />
Qpapanti that =as reconstructed after the earthCuake.<br />

Oia - Finikia<br />
Nrom the hill of Rrophet Elias in Oia, your gaOe falls upon the dark =aters<br />
of the Caldera, passes over the volcano’s petrified lava and then turns high<br />
up to the =hite line of houses that sparkle in the clear light.<br />
As you descend to=ards Rerivolos, you =ill have the feeling that you are<br />
floating in the air amongst the steep volcanic rocks and the vineyards that<br />
spread out to the north in !axedes next to the sea, climbing up the hillside<br />
to the first canavas of Ninikia and =est=ards up to Tholos, the second farming<br />

The main marble road =ith the imposing captain houses, the cre= members<br />
houses built into the volcanic rock, the steps that lead do=n to the little<br />
harbours of Ammoudi and Armeni, the many churches dedicated to<br />
sailors, the canavas and the raki distillers are evidence of the history of this<br />
=ell-kept village =hen the =ooden ships of Apano Keria =ould cross the<br />
Kediterranean carrying the heady s=eet vinsanto =ine and return =ith timber,<br />

The first inhabited village<br />
you =ill come across on the island<br />
is Rotamos (potami is the<br />
Greek =ord for river) and took<br />
this name as it is built by a<br />
ravine. Kost of the houses are<br />

Among the most =ell kno=n<br />
churches are Ranagia Giatrissa<br />
and Aghios Eimitrios. Agrilia is<br />
the oldest and largest village<br />
on Thirasia. It has an extremely<br />

rock as =ell as canavas. In the<br />
village you =ill find the church<br />
of Ranagia of Eisodia or Ranagia of [agadi =hich has a uniCue architecture<br />
that dates back to 1887. The capital of the island is Kanolas, =hich is suspended<br />
above the Caldera and has a vie= of <strong>Santorini</strong>. The church of<br />
Aghios Konstantinos, dating back to 1874, can also be found here. Kera or<br />
Keradiana =as an inhabited area about thirty to forty years ago. Today, the<br />
area offers many memories of that times as =ell as a =onderful vie=. The<br />
only visitors of the island are relatives of the inhabitants and those =ho arrive<br />
by tourist boats Pust to make their tour. Thirasia has a community centre<br />
=ith a great number of personnel, a =ell-eCuipped heliport, a central irrigation<br />
net=ork, and lodgings =ith a vie= of the Caldera, a CitiOens Service<br />
Centre and ATKs. There are 21 churches on the island and all locals take<br />
part in the festivals organiOed. If you go to Thirasia by boat and get off at<br />
Korfos, you =ill only be able to reach Kanolas by donkey or on foot.<br />
Alternatively you can go to Riva, the main harbour of Thirasia, by ferry boat<br />
from Athinios or by a small boat from Ammoudi =hich sails on a regular<br />
basis (at least three times a day). There you =ill find a sandy beach as =ell<br />
as the small church of Aghia Eirini. It is =ell =orth getting a complete picture<br />
of the island by visiting the monastery of the Assumption that can be<br />
reached by follo=ing the path=ay from Kanolas.<br />
