Pipe Shop Completes 50,000 Work Packages
Pipe Shop shipbuilders were recognized by
leadership on Dec. 7-8 for successful completion of
the 50,000th Pipe Shop work package for
Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). A total of 80,000 Pipe Shop
work packages are expected to be completed
for the ship prior to delivery to the U.S. Navy. In
celebration of the major accomplishment, Pipe Shop
shipbuilders were treated to a home-style breakfast.
The shop is producing pipe details with 35 percent
less labor than what was required for the last aircraft
carrier, George H. W. Bush (CVN 77).
“Gerald R. Ford earned a strong reputation for
teamwork during his long career in public service,”
said Kenton Meland, Pipe Shop Superintendent.
“It is a fitting tribute to his legacy that we enjoy such outstanding teamwork across many departments to
successfully complete pipe assemblies for the ship that will bear his name. I am extremely proud of all of our
employees who are helping us achieve record quality, schedule, and cost performance and being extremely
responsive to the ship construction team.”
VCS Shipbuilder Honored
Shipbuilder Syretta Brown (X31) was awarded the
Virginia-class submarine (VCS) Quality Craftsman of the
Month for 2011 by leadership on Nov. 28. Brown, a deck
electrician, was recognized for her outstanding terminal box
work on three complex Main Seawater Indication Components,
which are extremely compact and difficult to work. Brown
completed the work 22 percent under budget without any
discrepancies and ahead of schedule.
“We come here today to present Syretta Brown with a
plaque in honor of her great work,” said Chris Miner, VCS
even saying, ‘If I had to pay someone to do a job, I would want her to do it.’ It is shipbuilders like Ms. Brown who
make it possible for Newport News Shipbuilding to build great ships.”
Remembering 125 Years of History
On Dec. 14, 1974, Miss Virginia Warner, daughter of Senator
John Warner, former secretary of the Navy, christened the
nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser Virginia (CGN 38).
On Dec. 16, 1907, the “Great White Fleet” left Hampton Roads
and began a cruise around the world.
