TRAFFIC BUREAU
The York Regional Police Traffic Bureau is
comprised of 46 police officers and two civilian
members. This team is responsible for collision
reconstruction, traffic enforcement, commercial
motor vehicle safety and traffic safety education.
In 2009, the Traffic Bureau increased the
number of Intoxilyzer technicians, who test
blood alcohol concentration, to 29 from 20
as well as increasing the number of Drug
Recognition Experts (DREs) to 18 from 14 in
2008.
In October 2009, in response to provincial
legislation, York Regional Police re-launched our
Operation Stay Focused campaign, educating
drivers about the very real dangers of using
handheld devices and being distracted while
driving. York Regional Police officers issued
a total of 285 warnings to drivers during the
three-month education period.
In addition to Operation Stay Focused, the
Traffic Bureau conducted a number of road
safety campaigns, including Safe Roads...Your
Call, Eliminate Racing Activity on Streets
Everywhere (E.R.A.S.E.) and Safe and Secure,
which focuses on promoting the correct
installation and use of child and infant car
seats. In 2009, approximately 200 car seats were
inspected at clinics held in the Town of East
Gwillimbury, the Town of Markham and the
City of Vaughan.
