Notes for Jiri Idlbek: 

Jiri (George in English) is from the village of Javor, Bohemia. Property number 9. It was said, (no 

documentation of this) that Jiri died about 1835 from a rabid dog bite. Because of the rabies, he was probably 

condemed and shot to death. According to the Edlebeck wall chart, Jiri's son Josef was 9 years old. 

The early Idlbek family records are located in the village of Tynec, Bohemia at the Tynec Church. Burial of 

the Idlbek / Jrlbek family is also in the Tynec cemetery. Other family information has been found at the Pilsen 

Archives in what is now the Czech Republic.

Notes for Joseph Simon Idlbek: 

Joseph was born Josef Idlbek. In the year 2001, Jiri Idlbek a relative from Bohemia found the Czech birth 

record of Joseph. His birthdate is 10-28-1827. According to his death record, he died at the age of 78 years, 

but it actually should of been 76. The 1900 census extract gave the birthdate of May 1820. 

Before coming to the United States Joseph lived on his father's farm in Javor #9, Bohemia. (Czech Republic) 

This land was part of the Austrian Empire prior to WWI. The family farm was owned clear of debt by 

Joseph's father Jiri and then was passed on to Joseph at the time of his death. The family was well to do for 

that time period. It consisted of about 20 hectors ( about 50 acres) of land and it was a tobacco farm. In 1972 

the home was still standing and had the stable attached to it. Patrick Edlbeck said that Joseph sold the farm at 

a auction for $175 when Joseph came to the United States. Mary Caine Plummer heard the Joseph lost the 

farm in a poker game. 

Joseph's first wife's name is Barbora Kodym. We do not have any information on how she passed, but we 

know that both Joseph and Barbora had Matous Bures as a witness to their wedding. Matous is the father of 

Barbora Bures, Joseph's second wife. Both Barbora's were said to be friends. The second witness at the first 

wedding was Martin Kutil. 

According to the wall chart done in 1972, Barbara came to the United States in 1900 with three daughter's, J. 

Bures, his wife and daughter, Mrs. Rusek. But according to the census, Joseph and Barbara Bures Idlbek 

came in 1888. They had to have come before the spring of 1900 to make the Marinette County, Wisconsin 

census of 1900. The 1900 census also said that Joseph and Barbara had 12 children of which 9 were living. 

Jiri found all the birth records in the Pilsen archive it says that they had 11 children. All children except three



came to the United States. One child Emilie Idlbek born 24.7.1871 and passed 17.4.1872. Son Josef and 

daughter Barbora stayed in Czech. 

The wall chart also said that the Idlbek sons' worked in a brick factory in Germany and were the first to come 

to the States. The year of their emmigration was 1885. James Idlbek (nickname Jimson) came with James 

(Jake) his son and Jiri (George). The rest of the family followed on the account of money. 

When first emmigrating to the United States Joseph lived in Michigan. He then moved to Wausaukee, 

Wisconsin. Joseph spent the first 5 years working in the woods and the lumber yard for the Birds and Wells 

Lumber Company. Joseph also worked as a drayman ( hauled freight for people with a horse and wagon) and 

ran the saloon at Shepard's Hotel in Wausaukee. 

This is what was on Joseph's obit out of the Wausaukee Independent newspaper on Saturday August 29, 

1903: 

Joseph Edlbeck passes away 

He died Thursday morning, of heart failure at the age of 80 years. 

Joseph Edlbeck, one of the pioneer residents of Wausaukee, died Thursday morning at his home here after a 

brief illness with heart disease. 

The deceased was born in Bohemia eighty years ago and came to this country with his family about twenty 

years ago, locating in Bessemer, Michigan, where he worked on the railroad until he cme here to Wausaukee. 

He has been a resident of Wausaukee for about fifteen years. 

He was a very rugged man for one of his years, and during the first five years after moving here he worked in 

the woods and the lumber yard for the Bird & Wells Lumber Company. Since that time he has been running a 

dray. 

He was obliged to abandon his work about three weeks ago, but had been confined to his bed only a week 

previous to his demise. 

Mr. Edlbeck is survived by his wife, who is seventy-four years of age, four sons- Anton, Frank and James, of 

this place, and Joseph who is living in Bohemia-and four daughters- Mrs. Anton Edlbeck, Mrs. Adam 

Pleckinger, Mrs. James Benesch and Mrs. Andrew Jermark, all of whom reside in Wausaukee. 

The funeral will be held Saturday morning at nine o'clock from St. Augustine's Catholic church, Rev. Fr. 

Looze officiating. Undertaker S. S. Mangold will have charge of the remains. 

Joseph and Barbara may have also had a daughter Pepka. Pepka in Bohemian means Josephine. I can not find 

any documentation of this child, but it is said that she came to the States at the age of 18 and passed at the 

age of 19 from TB.

Joseph went to Michigan, where he filed his declaration of Intention, in the county 

of Gogebic, State of Michigan was dated the 5th day of November, 1888. 

His Petition for Naturalization papers say that Joseph was born on the 10th day of 

May in the year 1867. 

Joseph emmigrated to Bremen, Germany from Bohemia where he took a ship to 

America on or about the 4th day of May 1887 and arrived at the port of Baltimore, 

on the vessel unknown. 

He declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States on the 5th day of 

November in the year 1888, at the Bressemer, Michigan. At the time of his petition 

he was married to his Barbara K. Ruzacek (Ruzek) They have no children.



It also says that he resided continuously in the United States of America for a term of 

five years at least immediately preceding the date of this petition, to wit, since the 

28th day of May in the year 1887, and in the State of Wisconsin for one year at lest 

next preceding the date of this petition, to wit, since the 19th day of March 1890.

Young Groom Passes Away 

Frank J. Edlbeck died of tuberculosis of the lungs at his home here Wednesday 

afternoon at five o'clock after an illness of about three months. He was confined to 

his bed for the last three weeks. 

Mr. Edlbeck was twenty-two years of age and was born in Bohemia, coming to 

America with his parents when he was but two years of age. The family settled at 

Bessemer, Mich., and about two years later came to wausaukee. They resided here 

for three years when they settled on a farm at Montpelier, Kewaunee county, where 

they have since resided.



Deceased has made Wausaukee his home for the last five years and was well and 

vavorabley known here. He was married on June 18th to Miss Mary Vedra of this 

place. He purchased a home and furnished it nicely for himself and bride, but their 

happiness was cut short when the groom contracted a severe cold which developed 

into the incurable malady which caused his untimely demise. 

Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. James 

Edlbeck of Montpelier, and six brothers, George Edlbeck, James Edlbeck, Thomas 

Edlbeck, Louis M. Edlbeck, Gilbert Edlbeck of Wausaukee and Emil Edlbeck of 

Montpelier. 

The funeral was held this (Friday) morning at nine o'clock from St. Augustines' 

Catholic Church, Rev. Wm. A Roel officating. Undertaker S. A. Mangold had charge 

of the remains, interment being made in the Wausaukee cemetery.

Passed Away Here Monday: Mrs. Thomas J. Edlbeck died of tuberculosis after illnes 

of a year's duration. 

Mrs. Thos. J. Edlbeck died at her home here at ten o'clock on Monday morning, 

death being due to tuberculosis. Mrs. Edlbeck had been ill for about a year and 

confined to her bed ever since July. 

Mrs. Edlbeck was formerly Miss Katherine Kucera and she was born in Kewaunee 

county thirty years ago. She was married to Mr. Edlbeck at Montipelier on Sept. 20, 

1904. They came to Wausaukee shortly after their marriage and have made this 

place their home since that time. 

The deceased was esteemed by all who knew here and her many friends keenly 

regret her sad death. Besides her husband she is survivied by her parents, Mr. and 

Mrs. John Kucera of Montpelier, two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Halada of Montpelier and 

Miss Marie Kucera of Green Bay, and two brothers, John and Jake Kucera of 

Montpelier.



The funeral was held Wednesday morning from St. Augustine's church, Rev. Wm. A. 

Reul officiating. Undertaker S. a. Mangold had charge of the funeral arrangements 

and the pall bearers werer Jaames Edlbeck, Matt Pelnar, Albert Jicha, Joseph 

Nejedlo, Andrew Ruzak, and Martin Sladtke. 

The relatives of the deceased from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. 

and Mrs. John Kucera, Mrs. Joseph Halada, John Kucers, Jr.,George Kallender, of 

Montpelier, and Miss Marie Kucera of Green Bay.

A.J. Edlbeck passes away: 

Wausaukee man succumbs to long illness with tuberculosis of the throat 

Anton James Edlbeck, a well known Wausaukee resident, died at the home of his 

parents Mr. and Mrs. James Edlbeck Monday afternnoon at 3 o'clock following an 

illness of several months with tuberculosis of the throat. 

Deceased was born in Bohemia 42 years ago and came to this country with his 

parents when he was 11 years of age, locating at Bessemer, Mich., where the family 

resided for two years before coming to Wausaukee. After a residence of six years 

here they moved to Montpelier and located on a farm. 

Mr. Edlbeck was married at that place twelve years ago to Miss Kathryn Kuchera. 

They came to Wausaukee and made their home here for eight years when Mrs. 

Edlbeck died of tuberculosis. From that time on Mr. Edlbeck resided with his parents 

here. 

Besides his parents he is survived by five brothers, George of Menominee, Emil of 

Montpelier, Gilbert of Wausaukee. Mr. Edlbeck was an honest, industrious mand 

and had a host of friends in this community. 

The funeral was held from St. Augustine's church Wednesday morning, Rev. A 

Malkowski of Crivity officialting. Undertaker Philip Bunker had charge of teh 

funeral and the pallbearers were Matt Pelnar, Emil Jicha, Louis Polomis, Joseph



Nejedlo, Andrew Ruzak and Joseph Forst. 

Those from out of town who came for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George 

Edlbeck of Menominee, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Edlbeck and son of Green Bay.

According to Mary Plummer, James and Elizabeth came with his brothers Ignatz and Censa. I did not find 

them on the ship record. Censa disappeared after coming to the States and Ignatz worked in a mill in Laona, 

Wisconsin. He died and was buried in Laona. 

James and Emma came to the United States for a better life according to Mary Caine Plummer. In Europe 

Emma and James worked together many long hours on the railroad to make ends meet and would take their 

infant daughter Dorothea with them. James was also going to be conscripted into the army in Europe, that is 

another reason they left. 

Elizabeth and James had 5 children born and five living according to the 1900 Marinette County, Wisconsin 

census ID #21412, Wausaukee Precinct, pg. 11. As of 1903, Alzbeta / Elizabeth Edlebeck lived at 

Wausaukee, Marinette Co, Wisconsin, United States. 

Elizabeth died on November 20, 1923 in Wausaukeeafter a plonge illness. She passed away on Tuesday. 

Undertaker A. P. Bunker was in charge of the funeral. The funeral was at St. Augustine's Church Friday 

morning with Rev. L M Schorn oficiating. Pallbearers were Antone V. Edlebeck, Peter Polomis, Jake 

Edlebeck, Joseph Nejedlo, Adam Pleckinger and Andrew Jermac. At the time of death Elizabeth had 11

Caroline and Peter settled in Wausaukee, Wisconsin sometime between the years of 1903 and 1905. 

In abt. 1941 -1956, Caroline lived at her daughters house, Mrs. Elizabeth Stadjduhar. Caroline lived the last 

15 years of her life there and died on Tuesday, September 18, 1956 at home, she was 90 years old. 

Carloine had been ill for several years and suffered a stroke three weeks before her death. Funeral rites were 

held at Morasky Funeral Home at 8:30 pm on Saturday and at St. Augustine Church at 9:00 am (a mass) 

Visitation was after 7 pm Thursday. Rosary was recited at 7 pm at the funeral home on Friday. Rev. Fr. 

Casimer Tomczyk officiated. At the time of death, Caroline had 26 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. 

According to Caroline's death notice, she and her husband operated the Polomis Creamery. This is false. Two 

of Carolines son's ran the creamery. She was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Wausaukee, Wisconsin.

Mrs. Anton V. Edlebeck passed away at her home south of town Saturday, May 

28, at the age of 78. She had been ill nearly a year. 

Mrs. Edlebeck whose maiden name was Antonette Edlebeck, was born June 2, 

1884, in Yaver, Bohemia. She was married to Anton V. Edlebeck, 54 years



ago in Vienna, Austria, where they lived two years before coming to 

America. In this country they located at Mastadon, Mich. They lived there 

one and one-half years before coming to Wausaukee, their permanent home. 

They moved to Wausaukee, July 9, 1887, and have lived here 51 years. 

Besides her husband Mrs. Edlebeck is survived by three daughters, Mrs. 

Joseph Nejedlo, Mrs. Major Schaf, and Miss Anna, Wausaukee; three sons, 

Anton M., and John J., Wausaukee; and Vencil, Baraboo; twenty 

grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Barbara 

Condrath, Bohemia; Mrs. Caroline Polomis and Mrs. Andrew Jermac, 

Wausaukee; and a brother, Anton Edlebeck. 

The pallbearers were James Edelbeck, Mark Edelbeck, John Jermac, George 

Polomis, Adam Pleckinger and Anton Polomis.

from 6 to 9 pm at the Morasky Funeral Home in Wausaukee. A rosary was said at

Louis Edlebeck dies Saturday: Wausaukee Man Victim of Attack 

Wausaukee- Louis M. Edlebeck 68 of Wausaukee died Saturday at 4:30 a.m. in Green Bay of a hear attack. 

Although he had been in ill health for the past four years, his death was unexpected. He was visiting his 

daughter, Mrs. Frank Weber, when he was stricken. 

Born in Europe April 22, 1877 he came to the United States with his parents at the age of seven years. The 

family settled in Bessemer Mich., and lived there for four years before moving to Wausaukee. Edlebeck 

attended the Wausaukee schools and then moved to Pilson with his parents to love on a farm. In 1902 he 

married the former Mary Haladay (Hallada) in Pilson and they then moved to Wausaukee where they lived 

on a farm. He retired two years ago. 

Surviving him are his wife, one son George, who now operates the family farm; two daughters, Mrs. Weber 

and Miss Mayme of Green Bay; a sister, Sister M. Margaret Winifred of the Dominican order at Racine and 

two brothers, Jake of Wausaukee and Gilbert of Green Bay. 

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St Michael's church. The Rev. Michael Jacowski will 

officiate at teh solemn requiem high mass. The Rev. Herbert A. Littel of Green Bay and the Rev. Louis 

Schorn of Manitowoc will assist. Burial will be in Wausaukee cemetery. 

The remains were taken fromt eh Bunker funeral home to the George Edlebeck home to lie in state until the 

funeral hours. Father Jacowski will recite the rosary there this evening at 8 o'clock. Pallbearers will be 

William Dunlap, Joseph Nejedlo, John DeGroot, Frank Peters, Emil Jicho Jr., and Josph Spangler.

82, for Wausaukee resident who died Wednesday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ann Weber, at Green



Bay. 

Th Rt. Rev. Magr. Joseph Becker of Menasha will bed celebrant of the requiem high mass. The Rev. Robert 

Sladek, St. Augustine Pastor will be deacon and the Rev. William Rickert of Oshkosh will be subdeacon. 

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The rosary willl be recited Sunday at 8p.m. in the Morasky funeral 

home where friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday. 

The former Mary Hallada ws born May 2, 1885, in Pilsen, Wisconsin. She was married there to Louis 

Edlebeck in 1902. They came to Wausaukee in 1903 and she remained here until 1943 when she moved to 

Green Bay. Mrs. Edlebeck died Dec. 15, 1945. She had been a member of St. Augustine Church since 1903 

and belonged to the Christian Mothers Society and Third Order of St. Francis. 

Surviving are two other daughters, Miss Mayme Edlebeck of Green Bay and Sister Mary Winifred of Detroit, 

a son George Edlebeck of Lena and two grandchildren.

George A. Edlbeck, 78, of 1012 Dunlap Avenu, , Menominee, a former resident ofWausaukee, died Monday 

evening at 6:50 at his home. He had been ill for the past several years. 

Born in Yover, Austria, May 10, 1867, he came to the United States 57 years ago. For 16 years he lived in 

Wausaukee and for 33 years he had lived in Menominee. Edlbeck was employed as a lumver inspector and he 

had been employed by the City of Menominee. The decesed was a member of St. John's Church and the Holy 

Name society. 

Surviving him are his wife, and three brothers, James of Wausaukee, Louis and Gilbert of Green Bay. 

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 8:30 at the family home and at 9 o'clock at St. Johns 

Church. The Rev. James J. Corcoran will intone the mass and burial will be in Wausaukee. The rosary will be 

recited Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock. The remains will be taken from teh Lemieux funeral home to the 

residence Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock.

Notes for Dora Benish: 

According to Mary Caine Plummer, Dora was very outspoken. She liked to talk politics. Dora was a petite 

woman with bowed legs. Mary also said that she can picture Dora working out in her garden with her babuska 

on. She had a large rasberry patch. Mary would go visit Dora in Wausaukee and said she had a great glassed 

in porch with a hanging swing to sit in. Dora always gave Mary and others big hugs and made them feel 

welcome. As of 1923, Dora Benish lived in Wausaukee, Wisconsin. She lived across the street from Caroline 

Edlebeck Polomis and Louis. She died in Wausaukee, she was in her 90's.

Emma was a clerk at the Laun Brother's Store for many years. She was able to help with all the Bohemian 

and Polish people in the area because she spoke their language. She was in a convent for awhile. Acccording 

to Mary Caine Plummer, "Emma loved to play cards." She never drove a car and walked everywhere. In her 

later years, she was reluctant to leave her home. Finally, Emma ws convinced to move to a apartment near 

Wausaukee Pond. She still would walk to her old hime in nicer weather. She married William Jason Caine, 

son of Daniel Caine and Mary Elizabeth Culbertson, on November 24, 1919 in Wausaukee, Marinette Co.,



Wisconsin. They seperated. 

In 1920, they lived in Gary, Indiana for a short period of time. They then moved back to Wausaukee. She 

died on June 21, 1974 at the age of 82.

Information from his son Patrick Edlbeck, 6-12-01, Pat wrote this information 1-22-1997 

Joe W. Edlbeck attended a rural school 1/2 mile east of the "Farm" thru the 7th grade. Jake took Joe W and a 

team of horses to a logging camp about 30 miles north of Wausaukee and left him there to work the winter in 

the camp. Joe W. was about 14 years old and often told of how homesick he was that winter. Jake came to 

the camp about Christmas time and brought Joe W. an orange, collected the wages for Joe and the team and 

left. Joe W. brought the team down in the spring to do the farm work in the summer. Joe W. worked several 

more winters in the logging camps and later at Parson's garage in the summer. Christ & Smith, a local logging 

Company, bought a mnarch crawler tracto (later bought out by Caterpillar Tractor) and hired Joe W. to run 

and care for it as he had knowledge of motorized equipment. Most people had never seen a tractor at that 

time. 

Joe W. and Ila Stadelbauer planned to be married when he came down from the woods in spring. When he 

arrived the "family" talked him out of his winters wages to pay the taxes and save the farm. Ila was furious, 

the marriage was delayed, and they were married a short time later. They moved to Milwaukee, Wi. and Joe 

W. found a job as mechanic apprentice at Swanson's Ford Dealership. the depression of the 1930's was bad 

and Joe W. was laid off in Milwaukee. They moved back to Wausaukeee and opened a garage next to and 

northof the Wausaukee Hotel. This business was successful for it's time. This business was directly across the 

street from "Hank" Stadelbaures store. Shortly before the 2nd World War Joe W. hired on to the CCC camp 

program as mechanic. ILa and the 2 children went with Joe W. in the summer time and returned to 

Wausaukee for school in the winter. They closed the CCC down at the start of WW2 and Joe W. was hired to 

take care of the new school buses that were recentlyput on the road in the Wausaukee School District. The 

family bought a house south of the iron bridge on the West side of Wausaukee. The house was purchased 

from the Lieson family who were a long time acquaintance. They lived here until moving to Green Bay 

permently during WW2. Joe W. then ran a boring bar at Fort Howard Paper Mill in Green Bay, Wisconsin 

making parts for army tanks. He then went to Cleveland Cliff Iron Co. coal dock in Green Bay as a 

electicians helper. Was asked to go to Duluth, Minnesota as a mechanic of the master mechanic about a year 

later after a man was killed in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They bought a condemned house, all windows broke 

out, and condemned for no sewer. Rental units were unavailable during WW2 and any livable house wass 

used. We worked on the Oak Street house for 8 years and finished it into a nice house. Ila lived here until she 

passed away from cancer in 1968. Jow W. lived in this house until he passed away in 19xx. The house was 

then sold. Joe W. worked for the Clevland Cliffs until a tornao blew the bridge crane down. Reiss Coal Co. 

bought what was left of the Clevland Cliff Dock and sold the land to Fort Howard Paper Milll. They took the 

men and equipment to their dock. Joe W. worked as mechaic art the Reiss Dock until he retired. Joe had heart 

probles for years that became worse in his old age. He died in St. Marys Hospital. Buried at Ft. Howard 

Cemetery, Green Bay, Wisconsin. 

Joe and Ila had two children, Patrick A. and Sheila Rose Edlbeck.
