President Aquino III
in Kasetsart University
During his official visit to Thailand from May 26-27, 2011, His Excellency Mr. Benigno
S. Aquino III, the President of the Republic of the Philippines spent two hours in
the morning of May 27, 2011, to pay a visit to Kasetsart University. On this very special
occasion, Kasetsart University Council approved to confer the Degree Doctor of
Philosophy (Economics) honoris causa upon His Excellency the President of the
Republic of the Philippines since His Excellency has actively contributed and
devoted himself for the benefit of the country and the better living of his people,
namely to generate more revenue, to promote trade, industry and export with foreign
countries, and to wisely allocate the governmental budget for the best of the country.
His Excellency has also emphasized one of his development policies on agriculture
while Kasetsart University has been working with universities and international
organizations in the Republic of the Philippines for more than three decades, namely
the University of the Philippines, Los Baños and SEARCA.

in Kasetsart University
The Conferment Ceremony was organized at
the Sutharm Areekul Auditorium and witnessed by
more than 600 invited guests of honor including
members of the University Council, Administrative
Members, Deans and Directors, faculty members,
staff, and students. After the ceremony, His
Excellency Mr. Benigno S. Aquino III, the President
of the Republic of the Philippines, delivered the
Address to the audience which emphasized on the
strong diplomatic relations between Thailand and
the Republic of the Philippines, and summarized
the policies of his government based on the benefit
of the people and the country.
After the Ceremony, His Excellency Mr. Benigno
S. Aquino III, the President of the Republic of the
Philippines, had a discussion with Chair of the
University Council, the President, Vice Presidents,
and Dean of Economics and shared ideas about
the cooperation between Kasetsart University
and concerned authorities in the Republic of the
Philippines.

ECO-Awareness
Sportswear Collection
by KU Champion at
the 7 th Grand Sports
Young Designer
Contest
Mr. Thanawat Jantasee, a third year student, Department of Textile
Science, Faculty of Agro-Industry, Kasetsart University was
announced the winner of the 7 th Grand Sports Young Designer Contest
organized with the theme of “Sustainable and Harmonious Living” by
Grand Sport Group Co., Ltd., on April 21, 2011, at Grand Ballroom, Building
E, Crystal Design Center. This 7 th contest encourages young Thai
designers to present their work and ability in the world of fashion clothing.
More than 226 pieces of work created by students from many parts of
Thailand were submitted to the contest.
Mr. Thanawat Jantasee, an advisee of Assistant Professor Dr. Anothai
Cholachatpinyo, Head of Department of Textile Science, Faculty of Agro-Industry,
mentioned that eye-catching design is the most current trend of sportswear that can
increase not only the attractiveness to athletes, also flexibility while playing sport. The
creative power of young generation thus becomes one of the important features for
sportswear design. His tennis sportswear collection named “ECO-Awareness” was
inspired by human, society and environment. Various patterns of different kinds of
trees and natural colors of local available trees converged into his work. Illustratively,
yellow is derived from pods of a golden shower tree, and auburn from bark colors of
tamarind, tropical almond and yellow
flamboyant. Colors from these trees
will not be as much garish and varied
as synthetic colors. Mr. Thanawat
Jantasee also revealed that it took
him around 9 months to produce
this unique collection of sportswear
based on the sketches and pattern he
had made in simply modest style but
filled with techniques. Mr. Thanawat
Jantasee wished to have his own
brand clothing in the future.
Natural color dying has been
the indigenous knowledge of our
antecedents since previous times.
Plants, animals and other natural
elements are used in the dying of
fabrics. Natural colors have their
distinctive characteristics such as the mellow tone and safety
wear. Moreover, the natural color dyeing to textiles is the
Initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn with the
purpose of study and development for better quality dyeing
process.

Envisioning KU Students
towards Global Context:
Batch 8
During April 24 – 28, 2011, Student Affairs
Division and International Affairs Division
jointly conducted a course “Augmenting Working
Experience and Concepts for Life Planning”
under the program entitled “Envisioning KU
Students towards Global Context: Batch 8”. The
main purposes of the program are to assist the
students to understand the changes caused by
globalization, to have an opportunity to share
ideas and experience with students in Asia, and to
augment working experience and the concepts for
their own career. There were 29 students joining
in the program (17 from Bangkhen Campus, 3
from Kampaengsaen Campus, 4 persons from
Si Racha Campus and 5 from Chalermprakiat
Sakon Nakorn Province Campus). The students
were among the student leaders, presidents of
student representative council, presidents of
student administrative organization, president of
student dormitory club, and presidents of student
union from each faculty. The activities under this
program comprised
Lectures to provide knowledge and useful
information for the study visit including Mandarin
and English for communication and formal
meeting on April 24, 2011 at the Lecture Room
303, Student Affairs Division, and
A study visit to universities and public and
private organizations in Taiwan, i.e. National
Chung Hsing University, National Central
University, National Taiwan University, Mushroom
Museum, and Thailand Trde and Economic
Office, Taipei during April 25 - 28, 2011

On March 31, 2011, at 9.30 – 12.00 hrs., Student
Affairs Division led the group of 17 student
leaders and 4 staff of Bangkhen Campus and
one staff of Kamphaeng Saen Campus to meet
the President and the Director of International
Affairs Division at the Meeting Room No. 5,
the 2 nd Floor, the Kasetsart Golden Jubilee
Administration and Information Center to get
their guidance and advice prior to this study visit.
In addition, Mr. Chalermpon Jatuporn, a Ph.D.
student, Department of Applied Economics,
College of Agricultural and Natural Resources,
National Chung Hsing University, who previously
joined Batch 1 of this program, also gave some
advice to this group of student leaders.
Through this study visit, the students learned
about learning and teaching of universities in
Taiwan, international students’ way of life in
Taiwan, the history of Taiwan, the relationship
between Taiwan and Thailand in terms of trade
and economics, urban planning, transport
system management, architecture, cultures
and life style of people in Taiwan, and modern
technology used in Taiwan in many areas such
as agriculture, space and remote sensing
research. The delegation of this study visit
included Mrs. Kwanjai Chukitkul, Vice Director,
Student Affairs Division, who was the Head of the
delegation, and 7 concerned staff.

and Taking
a Campus Tour
On May 16, 2011 Associate Professor Dr. Panit Khemthong, Vice President of
Academic Affairs together with Associate Professor Dr.Lily Kaveeta, Assistant to
the President for Academic Affairs and other administrative members from Faculty of
Agriculture, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Engineering, KURDI, and KAPI warmly
welcomed Professor Dr. Yoshihito WATANABE, Vice President, Nagoya University
and the AC21 Steering Committee. They paid a visit to Kasetsart University as
representatives of the AC21 member universities after participating in the 9 th Steering
Committee Meeting and the Opening Ceremony of the AC21 Student World Forums 2011.
Besides the discussion on academic cooperation, the delegates also visited the
following units so as to explore the facilities and laboratories for their future plan on
collaboration namely :
1. Faculty of Engineering,
2. Faculty of Agriculture, and
3. Kasetsart Agricultural and Agro-industrial Product
Improvement Institute (KAPI).

Evaluation of Agricultural and
Agro-Industrial Commodities for
World Competitiveness.
Non-destructive Quality Evaluation Special Research Center, Kasetsart Agricultural and
Agro-Industrial Product Improvement Institute (KAPI) organized the Academic Seminar
on “Nondestructive Quality Evaluation of Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Commodities for World
Competitiveness” in cooperation with Center of Excellence-Agricultural and Food Machinery
and Center of Excellence-Oil Palm, Kasetsart University. This seminar was held on March 15, 2011,
at Maruay Garden Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. The full day seminar was honored by 4 invited

speakers namely, Dr. Ron Haff, Department of
Agriculture (U.S.A.); Prof. Dr. Sumio Kawano
and Dr. Sirinnapa Saranwong, National Food
Research Institute ( Japan) as well as Assoc.
Prof. Anupun Terdwongworakul, Faculty of
Engineering at Kamphaeng Saen Campus,
Kasetsart University. They all were experts on
the said topic.
The aim of this seminar was to broaden
and exchange the knowledge of nondestructive
quality evaluation both on fundamental theory
and on application terms such as Acoustics,
X-Ray, and Optical methods (Visible, NIR and IR
Spectroscopy) as well as emerging technology
of Imaging Processing to the said techniques,
and to raise awareness of the benefits and
importance of nondestructive quality evaluation
for academic and industrial purposes. This
seminar attracted more than 180 participants
comprising researchers, lecturers, university
students, and interested people from private
sector and the other agents.
On this occasion, they had spent the whole
week in Bangkok to visit various interesting
organizations namely, Department of Agriculture
(Postharvest and Processing R&D Office
and Plant Quarantine Research Group, Plant
Protection Research and Development Office)
and Thai Irradiation Center as well as Kasetsart
University (Mycotoxin analysis laboratory, and
Faculty of Engineering at Kamphaeng Saen
Campus).

Widen Opportunity
with Shanghai
Normal University
O
n May 11, 2011, at 10.00 hrs., at the Meeting Room of
International Affairs Division, the 10 th floor, Kasetsart Golden
Jubilee Administration and Information Center, Kasetsart University,
Mr. Preungboon Chakkaphak, Vice President for International
Affairs, together with Mr. Somsakdi Tabtimthong, Director, International
Affairs Division, warmly welcomed Mr. Cong Yuhao, Vice President,
and his party from Shanghai Normal University, P.R. China. After the
discussion, Mr. Cong Yuhao, Vice President, and his party also had
a chance to meet with the representatives of the Faculty of
Agriculture, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Education
for further discussion in particular fields of mutual interests that
would initiate more collaboration activities in the future.

Initiate Partnership with
Saint-Petersburg State
Agrarian University
On May 10, 2011, Professor Dr. Victor Efimov, Rector of Saint-Petersburg
State Agrarian University, Russia and his colleague paid a visit to Kasetsart
University. On this occasion, Professor Dr. Victor Efimov had a very fruitful
discussion with Associate Professor Vudtechai Kapilakanchana, President and
Mr. Preungboon Chakkaphak, Vice President for International Affairs, before
joining the meeting with faculty members including:
- Dean of Fisheries
- Dean of Business Administration
- Dean of Science
- Dean of Engineering
- Dean of Economics
- Director of Research and Development Institute
- Associate Dean of Engineering
- Associate Dean of Agro-industry
The conclusion of this meeting is that both universities will officially establish
Agreement very soon. Simultaneously, several activities will be started, namely:
1. Academic Cooperation on Agricultural Science, Aquaculture Science, and
Technology Transfer (e.g. Engineering and Agro-industry)
2. Exchange of Faculty Members, Staff and Students
Despite language barrier, the medium of instruction at Saint-Petersburg
State Agrarian University is Russian, both universities believe that they will be
able to overcome this obstacle. Besides, Kasetsart University proposes that
Saint-Petersburg State Agrarian University should assist her to develop the
Russian courses offered at Faculty of Humanities.

EXPERTS Meeting in Nepal
During the period of April 13-16, 2011, Mr. Somsakdi Tabtimthong, Director of International Affairs Division,
paid a visit to Nepal to participate in the EXPERTS Selection Meeting hosted by Kathmandu University.
This meeting focused on the final selection for the applicants under the EXPERTS Project. This project has been
initiated by University of Göttingen, Germany.

so as to discuss the educational system
in Ireland and the future collaboration
between Kasetsart University and
University of Limerick.
Kasetsart University and University of
Limerick initiated an official cooperation
after the signing of Memorandum of
Understanding on May 6, 2009. In the
near future, undergraduate students from
Faculty of Economics will pay a visit to
University of Limerick. While they are in Limerick, they will register
and attend classes. At the end, their credits will be transferred to
Kasetsart University.
