President, paid an official visit to <strong>Germany</strong><br />

so as to strengthen academic cooperation<br />

with Otto von Guericke Universität<br />

Magdeburg and Mart<strong>in</strong> Luther Universität<br />

Halle-Wittenberg. The major objective of<br />

this visit aimed to discuss and jo<strong>in</strong> the<br />

special workshop on future collaboration<br />

<strong>in</strong> the areas of Logistics, Robotics,<br />

Environment, Mechatronics, and Alternative<br />

Energy as well as the Development of Staff<br />

<strong>in</strong> International Affairs among Otto von<br />

Guericke Universität Magdeburg, Mart<strong>in</strong><br />

Luther Universität Halle-Wittenberg and<br />

Kasetsart University.<br />

The delegates spent four days <strong>in</strong><br />

Magdeburg to visit several <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

units namely, Max-plank- Institut for<br />

Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems,<br />

Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation<br />

and Automation, Virtual Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Development Center, Faculty of Electrical<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Information Technology,<br />

Faculty of Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, Hermes<br />

Fulfilment GmbH Haldensleben, and<br />

KU<br />

<strong>Delegates</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong><br />

ENERCON. Besides, dur<strong>in</strong>g their time<br />

<strong>in</strong> Magdeburg, all delegates also had<br />

an opportunity to pay a courtesy call<br />

upon Rector and other adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />

members of Otto von Guericke<br />

Universität Magdeburg while the Sign<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Ceremony on academic cooperation<br />

between Kasetsart University and Otto<br />

von Guericke Universität Magdeburg was<br />

organized on this occasion.<br />

After leav<strong>in</strong>g from Magdeburg, the<br />

delegates paid a short but very <strong>in</strong>formative visit to Mart<strong>in</strong><br />

Luther Universität Halle-Wittenberg and also attended<br />

the Sign<strong>in</strong>g Ceremony on academic collaboration <strong>in</strong> the<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g future.<br />

Ow<strong>in</strong>g to the policy of Associate Professor Vudtechai<br />

Kapilakanchana, President, Kasetsart University should<br />

emphasize on work<strong>in</strong>g closely with partners not only <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Germany</strong> but also <strong>in</strong> Europe so as to strengthen potential<br />

and capacities <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and research as a<br />

national research university. Thus, the President<br />

has designated Sansanee Baroness von Enzberg<br />

to be an authorized representative of Kasetsaat<br />

University <strong>in</strong> Europe to be responsible for collaboration<br />

and coord<strong>in</strong>ation between European universities<br />

and agencies and Kasetsart University.<br />

2010, three representatives of Kasetsart<br />

University <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Associate Professor<br />

Dr. Sornprach Thanisawanyangkura,<br />

Vice President for International Affairs,<br />

Mr. Somsakdi Tabtimthong, Director,<br />

International Affairs Division and<br />

Ms. Noppakao Sir<strong>in</strong>tranon, Director,<br />

Confucius Institute Kasetsart University,<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed the 50 th Anniversary Celebration<br />

of Huaqiao University.<br />

On this occasion, all delegates had<br />

an opportunity to pay a courtesy call<br />

upon Professor Qiu J<strong>in</strong>, President and<br />

Mr. Zhang Yudong, Vice President. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the discussion, Professor Qiu J<strong>in</strong>, President<br />

expressed his gratitude and s<strong>in</strong>cere thanks<br />

to President of Kasetsart University for<br />

his contribution to strengthen academic<br />

cooperation between two universities. In<br />

this meet<strong>in</strong>g, President Qiu J<strong>in</strong> stated that<br />

Kasetsart University has been an important<br />

partner of Huaqiao University <strong>in</strong> Thailand<br />

and he hoped that <strong>in</strong> the com<strong>in</strong>g future<br />

several academic cooperation between two<br />

universities would be conducted based<br />

on mutual understand<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>terest.<br />

Besides, the President also purposed<br />

a plan to establish the Thai Studies Centre<br />

at Huaqiao University and requested the<br />

assistance from Kasetsart University on<br />

this plan which was agreed by the Vice<br />

President for International Affairs.<br />

On the other hand, s<strong>in</strong>ce Professor Qiu<br />

J<strong>in</strong> will pay a visit to Kasetsart University<br />

on November 18, 2010, the Vice President<br />

for International Affairs had summarized<br />

the program for the visit to reassure<br />

the spirit of academic cooperation and<br />

friendship between two universities as<br />

well as presented the university gift on this<br />

auspicious occasion to President Qiu J<strong>in</strong>.<br />

In this short visit to Huaqiao University, all<br />

delegates were very impressed with the great<br />

honor provided by Huaqiao University. They all<br />

were <strong>in</strong>vited to jo<strong>in</strong> the Reception to celebrate<br />

this very special occasion of the 50 th Anniversary<br />

of Huaqiao University <strong>in</strong> the midst of high<br />

rank officers from both central and prov<strong>in</strong>cial<br />

governments and honorable guests worldwide.<br />

Conference<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the period of November<br />

13-17, 2010, Kasetsart University hosted<br />

the 6 th Conference on Thailand-Taiwan<br />

Academic Cooperation with the theme<br />

“Food and Agricultural Innovation: Go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Global”. This academic event is a biennial<br />

activity under the academic l<strong>in</strong>kage<br />

between Kasetsart University and National<br />

P<strong>in</strong>gtung University of Science and<br />

Technology (NPUST) aim<strong>in</strong>g to prepare<br />

a forum for students and faculty members<br />

to meet and share their academic experience<br />

as well as to strengthen the academic ties<br />

between the two universities.<br />

As a host this year, Associate Professor<br />

Vudtechai Kapilakanchana, President,<br />

Kasetsart University, warmly welcomed<br />

Professor Dr. Yuan-Kuang Mike Guu, President<br />

of NPUST, faculty members, students, and<br />

honorable participants. In his address,<br />

President Vudtechai Kapilakanchana<br />

clearly stated that NPUST is an active<br />

partner of Kasetsart University while various<br />

activities by both faculty members and<br />

students have been conducted dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

decade of friendships and understand<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

He also believed that this collaboration will<br />

assist the better understand<strong>in</strong>g between<br />

people of the two countries.<br />

In the Open<strong>in</strong>g Ceremony, President<br />

Yuan-Kuang Mike Guu delivered his Plenary<br />

Address on the topic “Higher Education:<br />

Global Collaboration or Competition which<br />

encouraged the audience to reconsider about<br />

the essence of academic cooperation <strong>in</strong> this<br />

rapid chang<strong>in</strong>g world. After that, Associate Professor<br />

Dr. Sornprach Thanisawanyangkura, Vice President<br />

for International Affairs, Kasetsart University,<br />

addressed on the topic Food and Agricultural<br />

Innovation: Go<strong>in</strong>g Global and the related issues.<br />

The conference was also honored by Dr. Wichai<br />

Taechawattananan, President, C.S.G. Company<br />

Limited who was a Keynote Speaker on “Strategy<br />

to Increase the competitiveness for Thai Agri-Food<br />

Product Export<strong>in</strong>g”. There were altogether 215<br />

participants <strong>in</strong> this event with 47 papers and<br />

36 posters.<br />

After the Open<strong>in</strong>g Ceremony, the conference<br />

was divided <strong>in</strong>to four sessions <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 1) Food<br />

Sciences and Technology I, 2) Food Sciences and<br />

Technology II, 3) Agribus<strong>in</strong>ess and Others, and 4)<br />

Agricultural and Natural Resources, and the Poster<br />

Presentation. Besides, <strong>in</strong> this event, Kasetsart<br />

University also organized the special<br />

session on Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Meet<strong>in</strong>g between both<br />

presidents and other concerned members<br />

such as Dean of Agro-Industry, Dean of<br />

Fisheries, Dean of Economics which<br />

focused on the future plan, particularly,<br />

the Master’s Dual Degree Program.<br />

On the second day of the event, faculty<br />

members and students, were divided <strong>in</strong>to<br />

four groups to visit Faculty of Agriculture,<br />

Faculty of Agro Industry, Faculty of<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, Faculty of Economics, and<br />

Faculty of Forestry.<br />

On November 18, 2010, Professor<br />

Qiu J<strong>in</strong>, President, Huaqiao University<br />

and his party paid a visit to Kasetsart<br />

University. All delegates were warmly<br />

welcomed by Associate Professor<br />

Vudtechai Kapilakanchana, President,<br />

Kasetsart University. In the welcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Address President Vudtechai stated that<br />

Huaqiao University has become an active<br />

partner of Kasetsart University s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

2006. He also expressed his s<strong>in</strong>cere thanks and<br />

gratitude to President Qiu J<strong>in</strong> for <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g Kasetsart<br />

University to send the representatives to jo<strong>in</strong><br />

the 50 th Anniversary of Huaqiao University dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

November 4-6, 2010.<br />

On this occasion, President Qiu J<strong>in</strong> delivered<br />

his words of thanks and reassured that Kasetsart<br />

University has been an essential partner of<br />

Huaqiao University <strong>in</strong> Thailand. Actually, he was<br />

very pleased to witness the success of Confucius<br />

Institute at Kasetsart University (CIKU)<br />

under the cooperation of the two universities.<br />

He believed that <strong>in</strong> the com<strong>in</strong>g future both<br />

universities would <strong>in</strong>itiate various activities<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Exchange of Faculty Members<br />

and Students, and Jo<strong>in</strong>t Researches for the<br />

benefit of students and the countries<br />

as a whole.<br />

his party paid a short visit to Confucius<br />

Institute at Kasetsart University to meet<br />

with both Miss Noppakao Sir<strong>in</strong>tranon,<br />

Thai Director of CIKU, Associate Professor<br />

Zhao X<strong>in</strong>-Cheng, Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Director of CIKU,<br />

as well as other Thai and Ch<strong>in</strong>ese members.<br />

Kapilakanchana hosted a reception <strong>in</strong><br />

honor of all Huaqiao University members<br />

Elected Candidates of Thailand<br />

Dr. Supitr Samahito, keynote speakers and other tra<strong>in</strong>ee participants at the Olympic Museum<br />

Advanced Sport Management Courses:<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Program Directors<br />

Associate Professor Dr. Supitr Samahito, Chair of Committee, Doctor of<br />

Philosophy Program <strong>in</strong> Sports Science (Special Program) & Director of Thailand<br />

Olympic Academy, and Dr. Issadee Kut<strong>in</strong>tara, a faculty member, Sport Management<br />

Program, Faculty of Sports Science, Kasetsart University were nom<strong>in</strong>ated by the<br />

Olympic Committee of Thailand, Thailand Olympic Academy (TOA) as candidates<br />

of Thailand to be considered by International Olympic Committee (IOC), Olympic<br />

Solidarity (OS) for “the Advanced Sport Management Courses: Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Program Directors”. In this tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course, Olympic Solidarity is responsible<br />

for all expenses of the elected candidates who are deemed to transfer their<br />

knowledge and conduct activities <strong>in</strong> sport management for sports development<br />

<strong>in</strong> the world after completion of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program.<br />

The candidates of each country also have to organize one<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program on sport management proposed to Olympic<br />

Solidarity who will take full f<strong>in</strong>ancial responsibility for<br />

all <strong>in</strong>itiated activities. The result was announced that<br />

these members of Kasetsart University were selected to<br />

participate <strong>in</strong> the “the Advanced Sport Management<br />

Courses: Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of Program Directors” dur<strong>in</strong>g October<br />

3 – 5, 2010, <strong>in</strong> Lausanne, Switzerland. There were 13<br />

participants from 12 countries <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Thailand, the<br />

only country from Asia. Participants who successfully<br />

complete this program has become a Course Director<br />

<strong>in</strong> Sport Management tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program accredited by<br />

Olympic Solidarity.<br />

The 6 th Asian Association for<br />

Sport Management Conference<br />

Thirty five Ph.D students, Doctor of Philosophy Program <strong>in</strong> Sports Science (Special<br />

Program), Faculty of Sports Science, Kasetsart University participated <strong>in</strong> the 6 th Asian<br />

Association for Sport Management Conference dur<strong>in</strong>g October 14 – 16, 2010, at Putra<br />

World Trade Center, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The university adm<strong>in</strong>istrators accompany<strong>in</strong>g<br />

them were Associate Professor Dr. Supitr Samahito, Chair of Committee, Doctor of Philosophy Program <strong>in</strong> Sports Science (Special Program),<br />

and two committees namely Associate Professor Vullee Bhatharobhas and Dr. Issadee Kut<strong>in</strong>tara. Two students made their presentation on<br />

“A Problem Identification of Prov<strong>in</strong>cial Sport Facility Management by Prov<strong>in</strong>cial Adm<strong>in</strong>istration Organizations <strong>in</strong> Thailand.<br />

Dr. Pakthorn Lewchalermwong, a researcher, Faculty<br />

of Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Medic<strong>in</strong>e, Kasetsart University had been<br />

honored with “The Best Young Veter<strong>in</strong>arian Oral Presentation<br />

Award” for his work entitled “the first case of suboccipital<br />

craniotomy for men<strong>in</strong>gioma <strong>in</strong> Thailand” at the 36 th<br />

International Conference on Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Science 2010 and<br />

OIE&FAO Jo<strong>in</strong>t Symposiums organized dur<strong>in</strong>g November<br />

3 – 5, 2010, at Impact Convention Center, Muang Thong<br />

Thani, Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Pakthorn Lewchalermwong was<br />

also awarded 20,000 baht by the Thai Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Medical<br />

Association under Royal Patronage for his participation <strong>in</strong> the<br />

16 th Federation of Asian Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Associations Congress 2011<br />

(FAVA Congress 2011) to be held <strong>in</strong> the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

The Experiences<br />

of the 2010<br />

Kasetsart University<br />

Interns at Louisiana<br />

State University<br />

(LSU)<br />

On October 29, 2010, the Graduate School held the English lunchtime<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ar on “the experiences of the 2010 Kasetsart University Interns<br />

at Louisiana State University (LSU)”, which was given by the <strong>in</strong>terns<br />

themselves. The sem<strong>in</strong>ar was held at the Meet<strong>in</strong>g Room Two on the seventh<br />

floor of the Graduate School Build<strong>in</strong>g. Several students from various<br />

faculties and the Dean of the Graduate School, Associate Professor<br />

Dr. Gunjana Theeragool attended the sem<strong>in</strong>ar.<br />

Mr. Sandro Kunz, English Editor of the Graduate School, opened<br />

the sem<strong>in</strong>ar with an <strong>in</strong>troduction of all four 2010 Kasetsart University<br />

<strong>in</strong>terns who attended the three-month-long <strong>in</strong>ternship at Louisiana State<br />

University from May to August. The <strong>in</strong>terns <strong>in</strong>itiated their presentation<br />

with reports on their experiences at Louisiana State University.<br />

Aside work <strong>in</strong> their respective laboratories, the KU <strong>in</strong>terns<br />

had an opportunity to participate <strong>in</strong> several activities and<br />

to visit many <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g sites outside the university such as<br />

the National Naval Aviation Museum, the Battleship Memorial<br />

Park, the TABASCO Pepper Sauce Factory, and the Hot Air<br />

Balloon Festival. They also traveled to nearby states such as<br />

Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Later, the <strong>in</strong>terns<br />

went on to elaborate on the background of the LSU <strong>in</strong>ternship<br />

program, pert<strong>in</strong>ent application processes, as well as the necessary<br />

arrangements of travel documents such as passports and visas.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terns furthermore remarked that they ga<strong>in</strong>ed many<br />

valuable experiences from the exchange such as to practise their<br />

read<strong>in</strong>g, listen<strong>in</strong>g, and writ<strong>in</strong>g skills. They described that they<br />

had to adjust to the particularities of a lodge environment,<br />

get used to commute to work <strong>in</strong> novel ways, as well as to work<br />

and live <strong>in</strong> an unfamiliar environment. They also participated<br />

<strong>in</strong> culture exchange activities together with their new friends<br />

and professors.<br />

The speakers concluded their presentation with answer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

questions from the audience. F<strong>in</strong>ally, the speakers were<br />

presented with gifts as signs of appreciation for their time and<br />

effort spent for the preparation of their presentation.<br />

Mr. Somsakdi tabtimthong, Director, International Affairs Division,<br />

Kasetsart University, participated <strong>in</strong> the 23 rd University Consortium<br />

Executive Board Meet<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the period of November 9-12, 2010<br />

at University of the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es Los Baños, the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es. This event<br />

comprised 19 representatives of member and associated member<br />

universities and SEARCA. The Agenda of this meet<strong>in</strong>g covered the<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g essential issues:<br />

1. Report of the Secretariat<br />

On this issue, it is <strong>in</strong>formed that the Secretariat had<br />

already received the applications from both faculty members<br />

and students on the follow<strong>in</strong>g fellowships: 1) two Kasetsart University<br />

graduate students apply<strong>in</strong>g for the Thesis grant and 2) seven Kasetsart<br />

University faculty members apply<strong>in</strong>g for the Faculty Exchange Grants.<br />

2. Master Program <strong>in</strong> ASEAN Agriculture and Development<br />

This concept proposal was <strong>in</strong>itiated by University of the<br />

Philipp<strong>in</strong>es Los Baños aim<strong>in</strong>g on build<strong>in</strong>g competencies of qualified<br />

professionals <strong>in</strong> agriculture and related fields <strong>in</strong> the ASEAN.<br />

The proposal was also compared with the course entitled Master of<br />

Science <strong>in</strong> Susta<strong>in</strong>able Resource Management.<br />

3. UC Catalog of Graduate Faculty and Research Expertise<br />

Under this project, all members will prepare essential<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about the expertise of their faculty members and<br />

researchers which will be dissem<strong>in</strong>ated as data of resource persons<br />

<strong>in</strong> specific areas.<br />

After the two-day meet<strong>in</strong>g, all participants were <strong>in</strong>vited to jo<strong>in</strong><br />

a study visit to three important units, namely<br />

1. Rice World Museum, International Rice Research Institute,<br />

2. National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and<br />

3. Institute of Plant Breed<strong>in</strong>g<br />
