Welcome<br />

In <strong>2009</strong>/10 the <strong>Institute</strong> enjoyed yet another successful year <strong>of</strong> growth and<br />

development, with an increase in student numbers and work commencing<br />

at our new University Centre <strong>Grimsby</strong> on our Nuns Corner Campus.<br />

In January 2010 the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills<br />

backed the decision to merge Yorkshire Coast College with<br />

the <strong>Grimsby</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Further</strong> and <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong>.<br />

The merger brought together the depth <strong>of</strong> local knowledge and<br />

established links <strong>of</strong> Yorkshire Coast College (YCC) with the strengths<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Grimsby</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, a larger, financially sound and experienced further<br />

education college which has achieved significant success throughout its<br />

education portfolio.<br />

Our Lincolnshire Regional College (LRC) campus based in Skegness, <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

a wide range <strong>of</strong> both full and part-time courses to everyone from school<br />

leavers right through to adults.<br />

We continue to build on our work in the region, to ensure we are delivering<br />

an innovative, inspirational and high quality curriculum and look forward to<br />

Overview<br />

<strong>2009</strong>/10<br />

Our staff and students have had an exceptional year and their dedication and commitment can be<br />

seen across all levels <strong>of</strong> learning. Our reputation for providing excellent, highly trained industry<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional tutors is something that many <strong>of</strong> our students attribute to their success.<br />

The investment into staff development continues to go from strength to strength. Our innovative<br />

teaching and learning team were previously awarded the AoC Beacon Award for Staff Development<br />

in <strong>Further</strong> <strong>Education</strong>, re-inforcing our commitment to ensuring our students are taught by highly<br />

skilled tutors.<br />

We are extremely proud <strong>of</strong> the work we carry out with local employers and groups to ensure<br />

we are providing the next generation with the much-needed skills they need to be successful in<br />

their chosen careers.<br />

Our<br />

performance<br />

The <strong>Grimsby</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Group’s main catchment area is Northern<br />

Lincolnshire along with the East Lindsey district which<br />

encompasses Louth, the surrounding villages and the coastal<br />

strip down to Skegness. Our Yorkshire Coast College Campus<br />

serves the town <strong>of</strong> Scarborough and the surrounding towns and<br />

villages, whilst our Lincolnshire Regional College site serves<br />

Skegness and the region.<br />

We serve a diverse range <strong>of</strong> communities including large numbers<br />

<strong>of</strong> learners with learning difficulties and disabilities, school pupils<br />

14 -16 years,young people 16 -18 years,adults, and <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />

learners and an increasing number <strong>of</strong> International learners.<br />

We have very good links with schools and <strong>of</strong>fer our learners a<br />

comprehensive range <strong>of</strong> programmes from entry level through to<br />

higher education including masters level.<br />

In 09/10 the <strong>Institute</strong> had in excess <strong>of</strong> 21,000 learners with over<br />

4,700 16-18 year olds. We have seen an increasing three-year trend<br />

in success rates for qualifications by age and length <strong>of</strong> course both at<br />

16-18 years and 19+, which, are all at above the national average.<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> provision has continued to grow, with the <strong>Institute</strong><br />

and Yorkshire Coast College <strong>of</strong>fering in excess <strong>of</strong> over 100 courses.<br />

Our success rates at <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> level have risen from 78%<br />

to 94% over the past three years and with the University Centre<br />

<strong>Grimsby</strong> due to open in September 2011, <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />

continues to develop at some pace.<br />

The <strong>Institute</strong>’s work with employers and our diverse range <strong>of</strong><br />

qualifications on <strong>of</strong>fer has seen our Employer Responsive Timely<br />

Success Rates as outstanding, with Apprenticeships at 81% success<br />

against the national average <strong>of</strong> 58% and Advanced Apprenticeships<br />

with 85% success rates, against a national average <strong>of</strong> 51%. Train 2<br />

Gain has also seen 91% success against a national average <strong>of</strong> 71%.<br />

Financial Year<br />

The merger with Yorkshire Coast College took effect on 1st January 2010 and its financial result for the<br />

seven months to 31st July 2010 is consolidated with the <strong>Institute</strong>’s results for the year.<br />

For the year ending 31st July 2010, the <strong>Grimsby</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Group, including Yorkshire Coast College, made an<br />

Operating Surplus <strong>of</strong> £1.230m, before exceptional costs <strong>of</strong> £1.933m, leaving a net deficit <strong>of</strong> £0.704m. The<br />

exceptional costs related to accelerated depreciation costs, pr<strong>of</strong>essional fees incurred for the aborted new<br />

build and exceptional restructuring costs at Yorkshire Coast College which related to pension scheme costs.<br />

The result for <strong>2009</strong>/10 compares to an operating surplus for 2008/09 <strong>of</strong> £1.827m, less exceptional costs<br />

<strong>of</strong> £1.177m relating to the write-<strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> costs incurred for the whole campus new build project following<br />

withdrawal <strong>of</strong> support from the Learning & Skills Council, leaving a net surplus <strong>of</strong> £0.65m.<br />

The charts within this section illustrate the financial stability <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> and give an insight as to<br />

where the income comes from and where the expenditure is spent.<br />

Group Balance Sheet<br />

The net assets <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> totalled<br />

£25.9m at 31st July 2010.<br />

This compared to a figure <strong>of</strong> £14.0m at<br />

31st July <strong>2009</strong>. The assets and liabilities<br />

<strong>of</strong> Yorkshire Coast College were<br />

consolidated into the <strong>Institute</strong><br />

finances on 1st January 2010.<br />

The Yorkshire Coast College premises<br />

and land were pr<strong>of</strong>essionally revalued<br />

and their valuation increased from<br />

£3.9m to £17.78m.<br />

Operating income decreased by 1.3%<br />

from 2008/09 to £46.8m. Income in the<br />

form <strong>of</strong> recurrent and other grants from<br />

the Learning & Skills Council and its<br />

successor organisations totalled £28.8m<br />

representing 61.7% <strong>of</strong> its total income<br />

compared to 61% in 2008/09. Overall<br />

income reduced by £0.6m from the<br />

previous year with reductions in Train2Gain<br />

decreased by 1.1% to £45.1m. Staff pay<br />

accounts for £27.7m or 59% <strong>of</strong> total costs,<br />

(59% in 2008/09). Non pay costs represent<br />

the remaining 41% <strong>of</strong> total expenditure,<br />

with 24.6% <strong>of</strong> this expenditure (10% <strong>of</strong> total<br />

expenditure) being spent on teaching and<br />

teaching support areas, 13% (5% <strong>of</strong> total)<br />

on depreciation <strong>of</strong> fixed assets, 21% (9%) on<br />

premises and 12% (5%) on administration<br />

represents the seven months ending 31st July<br />

2010. Staff pay accounts for £3.5m or 57%<br />

<strong>of</strong> total costs. Non pay costs represent the<br />

remaining 43% <strong>of</strong> total expenditure, with 14%<br />

<strong>of</strong> this expenditure (6% <strong>of</strong> total expenditure)<br />

being spent on teaching and teaching support<br />

areas, 21% (9% <strong>of</strong> total) on depreciation <strong>of</strong><br />

fixed assets, 29% (13%) on premises and 13%<br />

(6%) on administration and central costs.<br />

A further 13% (5%) <strong>of</strong> expenditure was<br />

spent on the trading and other income<br />

generating areas. Yorkshire Coast College<br />

incurred additional depreciation costs for the<br />

7 months to July 2010 as a result <strong>of</strong> the<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional valuation <strong>of</strong> the Land & Buildings<br />

on 1st January 2010. Additional costs were<br />

also incurred to update the campus facilities<br />

however, costs expended in this area were<br />

<strong>of</strong>f-set by the release <strong>of</strong> a Merger Support<br />

Fund Grant from the Learning & Skills Council<br />

The £27.7m Staff Costs chart shows that<br />

almost half <strong>of</strong> the staff costs (49%) were<br />

spent in teaching areas and a further 22%<br />

on teaching departments other staff.<br />

Thus 71% <strong>of</strong> staff costs are spent directly in<br />

the teaching areas.<br />

The £3.5m Staff Costs chart shows that over<br />

half <strong>of</strong> the staff costs (52%) were spent in<br />

teaching areas and a further 12% on<br />

teaching departments other staff. Thus 64%<br />

<strong>of</strong> staff costs are spent directly in the teaching<br />

areas. Administration and Central Services<br />

staff totalled 11% <strong>of</strong> the staff costs.<br />

Restructuring took place in both <strong>Grimsby</strong><br />

<strong>Institute</strong> and Yorkshire Coast College in<br />

anticipation <strong>of</strong> the impact <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR)<br />

affecting all public bodies, and also at Yorkshire<br />

Coast College restructuring occurred as certain<br />
