Welcome
In 2009/10 the Institute enjoyed yet another successful year of growth and
development, with an increase in student numbers and work commencing
at our new University Centre Grimsby on our Nuns Corner Campus.
In January 2010 the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
backed the decision to merge Yorkshire Coast College with
the Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education.
The merger brought together the depth of local knowledge and
established links of Yorkshire Coast College (YCC) with the strengths
of the Grimsby Institute, a larger, financially sound and experienced further
education college which has achieved significant success throughout its
education portfolio.
Our Lincolnshire Regional College (LRC) campus based in Skegness, offers
a wide range of both full and part-time courses to everyone from school
leavers right through to adults.

LRC works with the local community ensuring a programme of
qualifications are on offer to meet their needs whilst contributing to

We continue to build on our work in the region, to ensure we are delivering
an innovative, inspirational and high quality curriculum and look forward to
the future.

Overview
2009/10
Our staff and students have had an exceptional year and their dedication and commitment can be
seen across all levels of learning. Our reputation for providing excellent, highly trained industry
professional tutors is something that many of our students attribute to their success.
The investment into staff development continues to go from strength to strength. Our innovative
teaching and learning team were previously awarded the AoC Beacon Award for Staff Development
in Further Education, re-inforcing our commitment to ensuring our students are taught by highly
skilled tutors.
We are extremely proud of the work we carry out with local employers and groups to ensure
we are providing the next generation with the much-needed skills they need to be successful in
their chosen careers.

Our
performance
The Grimsby Institute Group’s main catchment area is Northern
Lincolnshire along with the East Lindsey district which
encompasses Louth, the surrounding villages and the coastal
strip down to Skegness. Our Yorkshire Coast College Campus
serves the town of Scarborough and the surrounding towns and
villages, whilst our Lincolnshire Regional College site serves
Skegness and the region.
We serve a diverse range of communities including large numbers
of learners with learning difficulties and disabilities, school pupils
14 -16 years,young people 16 -18 years,adults, and Higher Education
learners and an increasing number of International learners.
We have very good links with schools and offer our learners a
comprehensive range of programmes from entry level through to
higher education including masters level.

Higher Education
success rates
In 09/10 the Institute had in excess of 21,000 learners with over
4,700 16-18 year olds. We have seen an increasing three-year trend
in success rates for qualifications by age and length of course both at
16-18 years and 19+, which, are all at above the national average.

Higher Education provision has continued to grow, with the Institute
and Yorkshire Coast College offering in excess of over 100 courses.
Our success rates at Higher Education level have risen from 78%
to 94% over the past three years and with the University Centre
Grimsby due to open in September 2011, Higher Education
continues to develop at some pace.
The Institute’s work with employers and our diverse range of
qualifications on offer has seen our Employer Responsive Timely
Success Rates as outstanding, with Apprenticeships at 81% success
against the national average of 58% and Advanced Apprenticeships
with 85% success rates, against a national average of 51%. Train 2
Gain has also seen 91% success against a national average of 71%.

The merger with Yorkshire Coast College took effect on 1st January 2010 and its financial result for the
seven months to 31st July 2010 is consolidated with the Institute’s results for the year.
For the year ending 31st July 2010, the Grimsby Institute Group, including Yorkshire Coast College, made an
Operating Surplus of £1.230m, before exceptional costs of £1.933m, leaving a net deficit of £0.704m. The
exceptional costs related to accelerated depreciation costs, professional fees incurred for the aborted new
build and exceptional restructuring costs at Yorkshire Coast College which related to pension scheme costs.
The result for 2009/10 compares to an operating surplus for 2008/09 of £1.827m, less exceptional costs
of £1.177m relating to the write-off of costs incurred for the whole campus new build project following
withdrawal of support from the Learning & Skills Council, leaving a net surplus of £0.65m.
The charts within this section illustrate the financial stability of the Institute and give an insight as to
where the income comes from and where the expenditure is spent.
Group Balance Sheet
The net assets of the Institute totalled
£25.9m at 31st July 2010.
This compared to a figure of £14.0m at
31st July 2009. The assets and liabilities
of Yorkshire Coast College were
consolidated into the Institute
finances on 1st January 2010.
The Yorkshire Coast College premises
and land were professionally revalued
and their valuation increased from
£3.9m to £17.78m.

equipment, and the Amounts Due

Operating Income
(Grimsby Institute)
Operating income decreased by 1.3%
from 2008/09 to £46.8m. Income in the
form of recurrent and other grants from
the Learning & Skills Council and its
successor organisations totalled £28.8m
representing 61.7% of its total income
compared to 61% in 2008/09. Overall
income reduced by £0.6m from the
previous year with reductions in Train2Gain
income and some reduction in grant income.
In 2009/10, Higher Education
income increased by 9.9% to £8.9m
representing 19.1% of its total income.

As with income, operating expenses have
decreased by 1.1% to £45.1m. Staff pay
accounts for £27.7m or 59% of total costs,
(59% in 2008/09). Non pay costs represent
the remaining 41% of total expenditure,
with 24.6% of this expenditure (10% of total
expenditure) being spent on teaching and
teaching support areas, 13% (5% of total)
on depreciation of fixed assets, 21% (9%) on
premises and 12% (5%) on administration
and central costs. A further 20% (8%) of
expenditure was spent on the trading and
other income generating areas.

The expenditure for Yorkshire Coast College
represents the seven months ending 31st July
2010. Staff pay accounts for £3.5m or 57%
of total costs. Non pay costs represent the
remaining 43% of total expenditure, with 14%
of this expenditure (6% of total expenditure)
being spent on teaching and teaching support
areas, 21% (9% of total) on depreciation of
fixed assets, 29% (13%) on premises and 13%
(6%) on administration and central costs.
A further 13% (5%) of expenditure was
spent on the trading and other income
generating areas. Yorkshire Coast College
incurred additional depreciation costs for the
7 months to July 2010 as a result of the
professional valuation of the Land & Buildings
on 1st January 2010. Additional costs were
also incurred to update the campus facilities
however, costs expended in this area were
off-set by the release of a Merger Support
Fund Grant from the Learning & Skills Council
and its successor organisation.

teaching departments other staff. Thus 64%
of staff costs are spent directly in the teaching
areas. Administration and Central Services

Restructuring took place in both Grimsby
Institute and Yorkshire Coast College in
anticipation of the impact of the
Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR)
affecting all public bodies, and also at Yorkshire
Coast College restructuring occurred as certain
support services were subsequently provided
by Grimsby Institute departments.
