WORLDVIEW
Black Marlin Energy’s Jeff Hume
Doing business in the upstream oil and gas industry becomes more demanding each day.
For the foreseeable future, more than 50% of the world’s energy supply will come from oil and gas. Oil and gas producers have to supply this demand from areas
that are increasingly complex technically, geographically, and politically. Information – the right information at the right time – is essential if the challenge is to
be met. For more than 85 years, E&P and its predecessors have been delivering that information, on time and accurately. With a primary focus on exploration,
drilling, and production technology and management practices, E&P provides the critical information that helps the industry meet its goals.
›
›
›
How does E&P do it It is a simple but important formula.
First, E&P has put together the most experienced editorial staff in the upstream industry. The E&P editorial team combines years of total industry and journalistic
experience with the dedication to bring the industry only the best and most important information available.
Second, E&P’s editors specialize in specific disciplines, ensuring in-depth understanding not only of the technology and issues surrounding the discipline but also
of the nuances that influence decisions, designs, and developments.
Third, the E&P editorial support staff is second to none. From graphic design, to production and printing, to circulation management, to online information delivery,
every individual responsible for the E&P line of publications, printed or electronic, is a well-trained and seasoned professional. This team of editors, designers,
IT professionals, production and circulation managers and the numerous others it takes to produce our publications is the reason the E&P group has won 11 major
awards for editorial excellence, design excellence, and circulation management in the last eight years.
Technical Issues in Shale Gas Development
FRACTURING
Shale gas will not produce without fracturing.
Initial fracturing is often followed by
re-fracturing. Best-practice well planning
now includes provision for multiple fractures
of horizontally drilled shale gas wells. The
trend in shale gas fracturing has been
towards less expensive, slick water fracturing
with lighter proppants. Care must be
taken, especially in the Barnett Shale, to
avoid fracture propagation into water-bearing
formations.
Fig. 2. Helmerich & Payne FlexRig 4 has a hydraulic-ram-type
skidding system with two sets of cylinders, two reversible claws,
a hydraulic control console and a 2-by-11 well pattern.
Fig. 1. – Rigging up for a frac job in the Fayetteville Shale for Southwestern
Energy subsidiary Seeco. At top is one of 22 ponds that Seeco has constructed
in the Fayetteville play as sources of frac water.
WELL SPACING AND DRILLING FOOTPRINT
Well spacing has consistently diminished in shale gas wells. Spacing of 10 acres or less is not
uncommon. Well density is, therefore, quite high. In addition, shale gas occurs often in urban areas,
particularly in the Barnett Shale where wells are regularly drilled in dense urban areas around Ft.
Worth, Dallas and their suburbs. This further strengthens
the need for a small drilling and production pad
footprint. The solution has been the development of a
new generation of skid land rigs that allow more than
20 horizontal wells to be drilled from one drilling pad.
The skidding flexibility allows rigs such as the
Helmerich & Payne FlexRig 4, pictured here, to skid
over any one of 22 well locations with a spacing
between wells of 10 ft or less. Closely spaced and parallel
horizontal wells drilled from these very small pads
allow close concentration of bottomhole locations.
Q. WHAT IS SHALE GAS
A. Shale gas is natural gas stored in, and produced from shale formations.
Q. HOW WIDE-SPREAD ARE GAS SHALES
A. Gas shales occur widely over the United States and Canada.
Q. HOW BIG IS THE RESOURCE
A. Shale gas is a relatively new gas play. Not all prospective areas have
been assessed fully. Current estimates put the North American shale
gas resource at 1,200 trillion cubic feet total gas in place.
Q. WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DOES GAS-BEARING SHALE HAVE
A. As a gas resource, its most critical characteristics are its very low porosity,
and extremely low permeability. It requires special completions and fracturing
techniques to bring its production to economic levels.
Q. HOW MUCH OF THE NORTH AMERICAN GAS SUPPLY
MIGHT SHALE GAS EVENTUALLY PRODUCE
A. Current estimates indicate that shale gas, when fully developed, may
account for 10% or more of North American gas production.
Q. HOW MANY SHALE GAS WELLS ARE THERE IN NORTH AMERICA
A. There are approximately 40,000 shale gas wells in North America
DIRECT MARKETING
Direct Marketing
Direct marketing to decision-makers means more than mailing a letter, blasting an e-mail, or making a phone call. It means reaching the right decision-makers when you
need to launch new products, find new customers, promote an event, or drive traffic to your Web site or trade show booth. You need pre-qualified lists – from a trusted and
whether postal or email – is a resounding success.
operations managers looking for the most up-to-date information on exploration technology to find more resources; drilling technology for improved, less-expensive wells;
and production technology to keep fields producing more oil and gas for longer periods.
REPRINTS
Ancillary Products & Services
Reprints
Turn good press into great marketing! Being featured in an article or contributing as a guest writer within the pages of E&P magazine provides exceptional exposure
to industry executives who rely on E&P for relevant information for their businesses. Leverage the inclusion in the magazine to the fullest. The market trusts third-party
press and they trust E&P magazine.
Marketing campaigns benefit from both the strength of the publicity and the power of the credibility. Promote this visibility through a customized reprint program.
An E&P custom reprint is a reproduction off a published article or feature complemented with enhanced customized options. The final product is dynamic for marketing
programs, trade show collateral, investor relations packages, soliciting existing and prospective customers and human resource initiatives.
Custom reprints are multipurpose. They can be designed to adapt to many diverse business objectives and are cost-effective. They
complement any advertising or marketing campaign with unmatched authority and efficiency.
Traditional paper reprints typically require 10 business days.
Electronic PDF reprints are also available. Receive a screen-resolution electronic reprint suitable for e-mail and Web site posting.
Typical turnaround time is one to two days.
For more information on ordering your custom reprint, contact your sales manager.
MEA Awards
Now in its 38th year, the Special Meritorious Awards for Engineering
Innovation are the industry’s oldest and most widely respected
awards. The MEAs are truly the“Oscars” of the petroleum industry.
They annually honor the world’s best new tools and techniques for
finding, developing, and producing hydrocarbons.
MEA entries are judged on their game-changing significance,
both technically and economically. Judges are experienced
industry personnel from around the world; they are respected
professionals with engineering and technical backgrounds and extensive knowledge
of the categories they are judging.
As custodians of this industry tradition, Hart Energy Publishing and E&P magazine work
very hard to ensure that winners are selected strictly on the basis of their merit.
It should be noted that the awards are given to technologies, not companies.
There is no cost to enter.
We invite you to enter the 2010 awards competition. To enter, visit www.epmag.com/mea
Awards are presented each May at the Offshore Technology Conference.
Research Services
Now offered four times every year for crucial geographic market detail,
E&P’s Readership Research Studies gauge reader response to your advertising.
Why should advertisers or agencies participate in these studies
1. Measure extent of ad impact and exposure.
2. Obtain qualitative feedback of readers’ impression of the ad/company
from reader comments verbatim.
3. Obtain quantitative comparison with other ads in the same issue.
4. Test impact of different ads.
Studies are scheduled for the following months: February, May, September,
and November. These studies are unbiased reader surveys, providing candid
and spontaneous evaluations of your advertisements. Studies tell you what the
industry thinks about your ads, your products, your company, and even your
competition. You can rely on this analysis to refine your marketing messages
so that they result in more leads and sales.
Readership Research Studies are a valuable FREE service to our advertisers.
