Initial fracturing is often followed by re-fracturing. Best-practice well planning now includes provision for multiple fractures of horizontally drilled shale gas wells. The trend in shale gas fracturing has been towards less expensive, slick water fracturing with lighter proppants. Care must be taken, especially in the Barnett Shale, to avoid fracture propagation into water-bearing formations. Fig. 2. WELL SPACING AND DRILLING FOOTPRINT Well spacing has consistently diminished in shale gas wells. Spacing of 10 acres or less is not uncommon. Well density is, therefore, quite high. In addition, shale gas occurs often in urban areas, particularly in the Barnett Shale where wells are regularly drilled in dense urban areas around Ft. Worth, Dallas and their suburbs. This further strengthens the need for a small drilling and production pad footprint. The solution has been the development of a new generation of skid land rigs that allow more than 20 horizontal wells to be drilled from one drilling pad. The skidding flexibility allows rigs such as the Helmerich & Payne FlexRig 4, pictured here, to skid over any one of 22 well locations with a spacing between wells of 10 ft or less. Closely spaced and parallel horizontal wells drilled from these very small pads allow close concentration of bottomhole locations. WHAT IS SHALE GAS A. Shale gas is natural gas stored in, and produced from shale formations. Q. HOW WIDE-SPREAD ARE GAS SHALES A. Gas shales occur widely over the United States and Canada. Q. HOW BIG IS THE RESOURCE A. Shale gas is a relatively new gas play. Not all prospective areas have been assessed fully. Current estimates put the North American shale gas resource at 1,200 trillion cubic feet total gas in place. Q. WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DOES GAS-BEARING SHALE HAVE A. As a gas resource, its most critical characteristics are its very low porosity, and extremely low permeability. It requires special completions and fracturing techniques to bring its production to economic levels. Q. HOW MUCH OF THE NORTH AMERICAN GAS SUPPLY MIGHT SHALE GAS EVENTUALLY PRODUCE A.
