Process to appoint a
new diocesan bishop
AS ANNOUNCED in January, Bishop Michael
will retire this summer and a process for
appointing a new Diocesan bishop is
already underway. The Vacancy in See Committee
is preparing a description of the Diocese and a
desired profile of the new Bishop, and arranging
the election of six representatives (including at least
three lay members) from the Committee to the
Crown Nominations Commission (CNC).
A public meeting will be held in early Summer,
for people to feed in their views about the sort of
bishop Devon needs. The CNC will also consult
with other interest groups, including public bodies
like councils. If you would like to have your say on
what this Diocese needs, please email newbishop@
exeter.anglican.org. Emails can’t be answered
individually, but all will be passed on to committee
members. The CNC aim to approve a candidate
in the autumn – their preferred choice must then
be approved by Downing Street and the Queen, a
process that can take many weeks.
Please hold all those involved in selecting our new
Bishop in your prayers, and pray for Bishop Michael
and Esther as they look ahead to their retirement.
