E/N/C/V April 25-May 1, 2012 North Port Chorale presents ‘Spring Along’ PROVIDED BY THE NORTH PORT CHORALE The North Port Chorale, under the direction of Pat Prentzel, will present its final concert of the season, “Spring Along,” at 7 p.m. Saturday at the North Port Performing Arts Center, 6400 W. Price Blvd., North Port. The 70-member community chorus, accompanied by Dolores J. Smith, will sing various patriotic, popular and contemporary songs, such as “An American Medley,” “Steal Away,” “Do Lord Remember Me,” “Mi Vida, Mi Cancion,” “Old Time Religion Medley,” “I Believe” and an Andrew Lloyd Webber medley. This will be Prentzel’s final concert as music director. Jeffrey A. Herbert was named director effective June 1. Prentzel has been the Chorale’s director since 1998. She earned her master’s degree in education from Temple University, was a music teacher in the public school system for 20 years, been a concert pianist and appeared with major symphony orchestras, including the National Symphony of Washington, D.C. She is choir director and organist at Hope Lutheran Church in Gulf Cove and also teaches private voice and piano students. Prentzel will continue on as Soundsations director. The Chorale will be joined by their show choir, the 18-voice Soundsations. Guest performers will be the Lamarque Elementary Chorus under the direction of Kimberly Campos. The group is comprised of fourth-and-fifth grade students. They have performed this season with both the North Port Concert Band and the North Port Symphony. David Ball brings new band to Operation Troop Aid PROVIDED BY SCOTT METKO Grammy Award winner David Ball will bring his new band to Fort Myers for Operation Troop Aid at the Victory Lane Cafe at 8 p.m. Thursday. After selling 3 million copies of his debut record “Thinkin’ Problem,” Ball collaborated with Bob Dylan on “The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers – A Tribute” and won a Grammy for his contribution to the 2005 collection “Beautiful Dreamer-The Songs of Stephen Foster.” He was one of the first artists to take an independent release to the Country Top 5 with “Riding With Private Malone.” In 2011, Ball became an honorary board member of his charity, Operation Troop Aid. OTA raises money for care packages delivered at mail call to the U.S. military around the world and offers bill assistance. Ball is currently on tour in support of his ninth studio album, “Sparkle City,” being backed by his band, The Pioneer Playboys. North Port Concert Band presents ’This Land is Your Land!’ PROVIDED BY THE NORTH PORT CONCERT BAND The North Port Concert Band and conductor Dennis Silkebakken will present a grand finale concert “This Land is Your Land!’ at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the North Port Performing Arts Center, 6400 W. Price Blvd., North Port. This grand tour will transport the audience on a musical journey from coast to coast. “The yellow Rose of Texas,” highlights from “Jersey Boys” and “The Pennsylvania Polka” are a few stops along the way. Dixieland soloists will perform Dixieland favorites including “Beal Street Blues” and “Tiger Rag.” Guest soloist, David Downer is sure to bring back many musical memories with “l Left My Heart in San Francisco” and “New York, New York,” and as a very special treat, band member and concert pianist Bill Cerny will perform Franz Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.” The Concert Band will host a reception with free refreshments for all members of the audience in the courtyard during intermission. April 25-May 1, 2012 E/N/C/V Let’s Go! 13 Myakka River Bluegrass Band BY BARBARA BEAN-MELLINGER SUN CORRESPONDENT The patio of the Waterside Grill in Placida is packed on Tuesday nights because customers know what to expect. In addition to the great food and service, the Myakka River Bluegrass Band plays there Tuesday evenings to a toe-tapping, appreciative crowd. Playing traditional bluegrass songs like “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” and “Orange Blossom,” the group has been together with the current lineup for about eight months. Jim Marshall heads the band and plays the bass as well as serves as its lead singer. Joel Dean plays the dobro and resonator guitar, and sings baritone. J. R. Davis plays rhythm guitar and sings tenor for the group. Jeff Cisco plays the fiddle and Gary Meadors plays banjo. Marshall, Davis and another musician formed the original Myakka River Bluegrass Band in 2005, playing mostly at churches and charity functions. There have been numerous changes of players through the years, but the current band has been together for about eight months and has really clicked together. “We are a traditional Bluegrass band,” said Marshall, “playing in the style of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs from the 1930s to 1950s, not the more progressive Bluegrass-style.” Marshall grew up in Punta Gorda but moved to Tampa in 1962 and stayed there for 40 years. In 2001, he moved back to the area, settling in El Jobean. He taught himself to play the fiddle, guitar and mandolin. Marshall is on the Charlotte County Planning and Zoning Board and is chairman of the Charlotte County Historical advisory Committee. For years, Davis was a drummer with Bo Davis, who is half of the popular duo Bo and Becca, who also play at Waterside Grill. Davis is a sergeant in the Charlotte County Sheriff’s office and is running for county commissioner. Cisco taught himself to play and worked odd jobs to get his first fiddle. “Lots of bands substitute the mandolin for the fiddle, but we like the fiddle,” said Cisco, though he is learning the mandolin, too. He’s played on TV with Flatt and Scruggs. Cisco grew up in the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia, and his great-grandfather was head of the Hatfield clan, half of the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud. The feud died with the older generation, he said. Cisco himself had a career with General Electric before retiring. Meadors, a retired professor of theology, has been playing the banjo for 15 years — initially when he lived in Deadwood, Mich., and then when he moved to this area. Myakka River Bluegrass Band will be playing on Sunday at the Punta Gorda History Park at the fundraiser for Davis’ campaign for county commissioner and the Hibiscus Festival in Punta Gorda on May 19 and 20. And, of course, you can catch them at the Waterside Grill from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Tuesday. Just follow the crowd to the patio.
