F A F S A
Free Application for Student Financial Aid
Why
• Completing the FAFSA makes you eligible for financial awards from
state/federal programs and even some scholarships.
• Financial aid is awarded based on financial need, as well as on
academic, athletic, or other talents.
• Most financial aid is need-based but is often awarded in combination
with merit-based awards.
When
• Complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after the first of the year—
after your guardians have completed their income taxes
• Apply for your pin number after Thanksgiving at www.gohigherky.org
Where
• On-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov is the simplest, most time-efficient, efficient, most
accurate way to complete the FAFSA
duPont Manual SENIOR MEETING 2007 20

processing
• The college’s s financial aid office will process your FAFSA information
to determine your financial aid eligibility. If you are eligible e for need-
based aid, they will determine how much and what type.
• The college will create a financial aid package for you.
• Each college you list on your FAFSA will consider you for financial ial aid
and will notify you of its decision in late spring or early summer.
• The sooner you complete your FAFSA (after January 1), the sooner
the colleges can notify you of your financial eligibility.
Steps to Applying College
• Research at least 10 colleges. Narrow down your top
10 choices to your top 5. 5
• Update your resume’ & write your letter to give to
teachers and your counselor.
• Complete Teacher Recommendation index card—listing
3 teachers who will write letters of recommendation for
you, if needed. Teachers must initial this card beside
their name. Turn in card to the library. Make a copy for
yourself.
• Print or type neatly all of your college applications in
BLACK ink
duPont Manual SENIOR MEETING 2007 23

Steps to Applying College (con’t.)
Make your Application Folders (with pockets)
• One folder for your counselor
• One folder for each of your teachers who have agreed to do a
letter of recommendation for you
1. Complete the Recommendation Checklist and tape it to the
outside of each folder
2. Left side—place the letter to the teacher/counselor, your
resume’, , and any other information that you think is
important
3. Right side—slide slide the recommendation forms in the
addressed, stamped envelopes and align them by the due
dates listed on the front of your folder. Make sure that all
of your information is complete before turning in to
counselor.
4. You may add to your folders as necessary for additional
scholarships, etc. as long as you give a 2-week 2
turn around
time to complete the additional applications.
duPont Manual SENIOR MEETING 2007 24

Steps to Applying College (con’t.)
• Submit your folders to counselor/teachers by October 1
• Attach the application fee (check not cash)
• Address the envelop and adhere adequate postage.
Applications will not be accepted w/out adequate
postage. One stamp will NOT work.
• Do NOT put your home return address on the envelop.
We must use Manual’s s address.
• Submit all pieces of information that must go to the
college to the counselor at one time—inside inside the Folder.
We will complete the school’s s section, write a letter of
recommendation (if needed), and attach an official
transcript and school profile. Then, mail the packet to
the college.
duPont Manual SENIOR MEETING 2007 25

Steps to Applying College (con’t.)
• You must give at least 10 school days for your counselor
to complete the application. You must allow an
additional 4-54
5 mailing days before the application
deadline.
• In order for the counselor to write a good letter of
recommendation, we will need a resume’ and a personal
letter telling us things about yourself, both in and out of
school, that are not included in your resume’.
• All official transcripts must be mailed to the college by us.
We cannot give you an official transcript.
• Use a 9’’x x 12’’
envelop if you have many pages to be
mailed.
duPont Manual SENIOR MEETING 2007 26

Steps to Applying College (con’t.)
• Submit your Folder to our office. Do NOT give to us
in the hallway or lay it on our desks.
• If you have questions, ask before your complete the
application.
• Neatness is KEY!
• Write the due date on application for counselor to see.
• Official transcripts will be sent with all applications.
• Must give counselor at least 10 days to process
application—more time if a letter of recommendation
is required.
duPont Manual SENIOR MEETING 2007 27

You make a commitment to enroll in a school if you are admitted. You
have to withdraw all other applications and make a nonrefundable
deposit. One possible disadvantage is that it may mean you do not n
have
any leverage in negotiating a better financial aid package.
You apply to your preferred school and receive a decision before the
normal response date.
duPont Manual SENIOR MEETING 2007 28

• Updated file inside the College/Career Room (filing
cabinet directly as you walk into the office on the left
side)
• Do NOT take the last application. Ask the secretary to
make a copy for you.
• Sometimes there can only be one nominee
• Listen to and watch the announcements
• Read the Senior Scoop
• Share all of this information with your
parents
duPont Manual SENIOR MEETING 2007 29

NCAA Clearinghouse
• You must apply online if you plan to play any
college sport at www.ncaa.org
• Download the release form
• Bring release form to counselor’s s office with
stamped-addressed addressed envelop. We will send
transcript.
• You must pay online using a credit card
• You will also download the final transcript form
which you should hold on to until NCAA calls for
it at the end of the year.
• This should be done ASAP. Athletes cannot
make a college visit until this is done. NCAA
Division I rule!
