Phenomenal Teammates: Building Bonds
What’s it like to play on the women’s soccer team Plain old hard work, for
one. And ‘round-the-clock friendship for another.
“We really bond with other people on and off the field. We’re friends, not just
teammates,” says goalie and team captain Megan Dixon, a senior
Interdisciplinary Studies major from Georgia. “We’re together 5 days a week,
including many hours of on-the-road traveling to games and tournaments.”
While riding the team bus, players share long talks, watch movies on their
laptops, listen to iPods, munch on snacks, and tackle the next round of
homework. On a few recent trips to Georgia, the entire team actually stayed
at Megan’s house. “My mom treats us like queens,” she says.
Once on the field, the team “knows how to play 100% for the entire 90
minutes,” says midfield/defensive player Brethny Espinosa, a junior Information
Systems Management major from Washington who was injured during a
hard-fought game this season.
Brooke Littlefield, a midfield/defensive player and senior Accounting major
from Pennsylvania, has played soccer all 4 years at CCC. “Coach Milton
encourages everyone to stick with it – to keep working on it. And that carries
over to life. We’ve learned to never give up.”
Most importantly, the team strives to live for Christ through struggles and
trials. Midfield player Jennifer Ramos, a senior Social Studies Education major
from Hawaii, says that “all team members pray with their prayer partners
before every game. Plus, the team conducts devotions before and after every
practice.”
After all, a Christian soccer team doesn’t just move the ball down the field; it
moves people toward Christ.
