Where to stay when<br />

you arrive<br />

When you arrive in <strong>Nanaimo</strong>, you will need<br />

a place to stay. Many newcomers stay with<br />

relatives or friends when they first arrive.<br />

If you do not have friends or relatives in<br />

<strong>Nanaimo</strong>, you can stay in a hotel or motel<br />

until you find a home.<br />

You can look in the telephone book’s yellow<br />

pages, under Hostels, Hotels and Motels.<br />

The Central Vancouver Island Multicultural<br />

Society (CVIMS) can also help you find a<br />

place to stay.<br />

Agencies to help<br />

newcomers<br />

Immigrant settlement agencies give free help<br />

to newcomers. Most of these agencies have<br />

interpreters and settlement workers. They can<br />

help newcomers look for housing, jobs, and<br />

English classes. They may also do translations.<br />

These agencies may help with immigration<br />

problems.<br />

In <strong>Nanaimo</strong>, the Central Vancouver Island<br />

Multicultural Society (CVIMS) runs the<br />

Immigrant Welcome Centre. The centre has<br />

a “Welcome to Canada” support group that<br />

is a place to meet people and learn about life<br />

in Canada. The centre provides information<br />

sessions about living in Canada, and information<br />

and referrals to other services. All services<br />

provided at the centre are free of charge.<br />

Society can help you find interpreters and<br />

translators.<br />

Interpreters of British Columbia at<br />

www.stibc.org. You can also look in<br />

the yellow pages, under Translators and<br />

Interpreters. These companies charge a fee.<br />
