Intended participants: Scientists, students and technicians involved in the practical laboratory-scale
aspects of lithium-ion battery research. For beginners and medium experienced.
About the seminar:
The seminar will give insight into the electrochemical characterization of Li-ion battery materials, with
the focus on practical aspects. The attendee will be exposed to all the working stages of making an
electrode from the powder (slurry preparation, casting, drying, cutting), building the test cell (half and
full cells), and finally running the electrochemical test (constant current cycles, voltammetry,
impedance). State-of-the-art equipment will be available throughout the hands-on sessions, including
MBraun glove box system, Biologic impedance analyzer, Maccor series 4000 cycler and the full
portfolio of EL-CELL test equipment. The seminar will also cover various electrochemical in-situ
techniques (dilatometry, gas analysis, Raman, X-ray), and give guidance on how to work with the
respective test cells.

Who: The seminar will be given by Matthias Hahn. Matthias received his PhD in 1997 at the
University of Hamburg in Physical Chemistry. Since then he worked at Dornier, the Paul Scherrer
Institute and Honeywell on electrochemical storage, with the focus on supercapacitors and Li-ion
batteries. In summer 2012, Matthias joined EL-CELL as co-owner and head of development.
