What the Duke of Edinburgh group does
This group will provide the opportunity for up to 6 young people with learning disabilities
to participate in each Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award allows young people from 18-25 years to develop existing
and new interests and life skills. Each young person will achieve an award by completing a
personal programme of activities in four sections i.e. volunteering, physical, acquiring new
skills and expedition activity. Each young person must do a minimum of 3 months activity
(or 12 hours altogether).
The young person also has to spend 3 months on one of the volunteering, physical or
skills sections. On average each young person will spent approximately 2 sessions a week
taking part in their activities. The young people who attend have varying levels of learning
disability and will be completing their bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award along with their
mainstream peers who attend the Stowe Centre Youth Club.
Each participant will learn new independent living and social skills. After a recent expedition
trip, where one young service user had just achieved their bronze award they said “this has
helped to change my life, I can now do things I thought I could never do”.
What does the group aim to achieve
• This project will help to ensure
the effective delivery of
partnership working and
increase the numbers of
young people with disability
who can access mainstream
Westminster youth provision.
• It will also create meaningful
opportunities for young people
with disabilities to achieve and
learn new skills, become more
self-reliant and independent
• To give young people new and
exciting experiences
• Increase self-awareness
