Archbishop Alfred Hughes
From the Principal
As the anticipation for the school year begins and we
somewhat regretfully leave the lazy days of summer behind,
we prepare for the more-fast paced experience of the 2009-
10 school year and welcome our new students, parents, and
teachers to our SSA school community. As newcomers to
the SSA family, you will find SSA parents and teachers to be
an affable group. We would like to suggest that you get
involved in something at SSA right away, so that you can
meet people quickly and enjoy that family feeling sooner
rather than later. We also welcome our returning students,
parents, and teachers back to what promises to be an
exceptional school year. Our student council has been hard
at work all summer attending both LASC and NASC, and
planning much of the summer to design a truly exciting and
fun school year full of activities.
I would like to humbly suggest a few thoughts for you to
consider as we get ready to begin 2009-10.
As a family…
· Take time to pray together, beyond Sunday Mass
· Take time to share at least one meal together, on a
daily basis if possible
· Take time to have a conversation with one another
daily
· Take time to play, even if it is on a weekly basis
As parents…
· Make sure that you have updated or activated (for
new parents) your Edline account including your e-
mail address. We will be communicating with you
mostly electronically. If you only use Edline to keep
abreast of your daughter’s grades, you will miss
every other piece of communication that we send
you. Just making a commitment to read the
newsletter will improve your knowledge of the
school’s complete program and aid in enhancing
your daughter’s school experience.
Archbishop Philip Hannan
August 2009 Dove Newsletter
· Review your daughter’s grades regularly. If you see
that her grades are not what they should be, please e-
mail her teacher (s) and/or counselor right away.
Counselors and teachers will be attempting to set up
learning plans with and for those students who might
experience academic issues, so that students feel more
in control of their learning experience in preparation
for college.
In terms of our educational goals for this year, our teachers
will spend time working with student learning data and
fashioning specific goals directed at improving student learning.
This effort maps out our efforts directed by strategic plan
with regard to curriculum renewal, data review, and curriculum;
all with the purpose of improved student learning. As Gerald
Tirozzi, former executive director of the National Association
of Secondary School Principals once said, “Being a less-thanaverage
high school is simply not acceptable; being a good high school
largely represents a commitment to the status quo; being a great high
school should be the individual and collective resolve for all…” Since
SSA has never been satisfied with status quo, I expect that everyone
in the SSA community will become involved in our schoolwide
goals and long range strategic planning to make this the
best educational institution for young women that could be.
Here’s to an involved, innovative, challenging year for us all
filled with memorable moments of spirituality, academics,
sisterhood, fun, and humor. Finally, I leave you with a quote
from the Rule of Benedict c. 72: “Let them prefer nothing
whatever to Christ. And may He bring us all together to
everlasting life.”
Peace in Christ led to Him by Our Lady,
Mary Kathryn Villere
In reading the rest of this newsletter, you will read about several learning experiences of our students as well as teachers and
administrators. It has indeed been a busy summer. We are excited to begin the new school year with a vision of continuing
our work to be the best school in the Gulf South. With your support this will absolutely become a reality.
A few reminders:
* Senior parents, August 11, 6:00 PM, SSA gym. This is an important day for you. The mandatory student/parent
meeting will present all the information that you will need to successfully navigate through your daughter’s senior year
with great memories and her successful matriculation into the college of her choice. One component of this night is
a tradition that involves the senior parents in anticipation of your daughters receiving their rings. We will have a light
supper provided, because many of you will not be able to get home from work, have dinner, and manage to get to
school in time for the meeting. Hopefully, this will make things somewhat easier for you. It will also give us an
opportunity for some fellowship as we begin this memorable year together.
New Parents – a few dates for you to remember:
* Book Day, August 10 (see page six for schedule) after Computer Application Training, the students will go to the
gym at 11:30 a.m. to complete Book Day. The girls must come dressed in their complete uniform, including
blazer. On this day the girls will experience many school-related activities such as getting their school I.D. photo taken,
getting their assigned locks and lockers, paying for supplemental course fees, choosing a lunch plan, etc.
* Orientation for 8 th graders, 8:00-11:15 a.m., August 11 and Freshman Friendship Day (all 9 th graders), 9:15 -
allows you to walk through each of your daughter’s classes and meet her teachers.
Back to School Dance, August 14, 7–10 p.m., SSA gym.
From the President
A new beginning is always an exciting time, as well as one
filled with great anticipation. As we embark upon this school
year 2009-10, we eagerly anticipate the new challenges which
lie ahead of us, offering all of us a possibility for new growth
and achievements as we continue to implement our strategic
plan to make SSA the best school in the Gulf South!”
During the last school year we completed the implementation
and saw a multitude of accomplishments of the 1:1 computing
system with all of our students now having a laptop. We are
proud of this initiative which fulfills one of the tenets of our
Strategic Plan “Innovation, Purpose, and Promise.” Our
technology department and faculty have worked most diligently
to put this program in place. This is only the beginning of this
endeavor. Never content to “rest on our laurels”, we continue
to explore methods to upgrade this initiative on a recurring
basis as opportunities become available.
Several of our faculty attended a national technology
conference in Washington, D.C. this summer to keep abreast
of the emerging trends and best practices in technology.
Through the sessions they participated in they discovered
proudly how highly prepared they/we are for this type of
program. They felt that they were ahead of the curve in the
knowledge and skills they need to fully deploy this initiative
with our students and faculty. Additionally, they learned a
great deal about where we need to take our program in the
future. Please join me in applauding our technology
department for a highly successful “first phase” of this element
of the strategic plan.
Last year saw the completion of our beautiful chapel in honor
of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. The chapel is the source
of many graces and blessings as our students and faculty and
community visit Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and participate
in Masses and prayer services such as Reconciliation and Holy
Communion. The chapel has been the site of several alumnae
weddings already. The icon of Our Mother of Perpetual
Help was recently installed just in time for the feast of Mary
under that title. What a beautiful addition to our chapel. May
God bless all who have supported this endeavor through their
prayers and generous donations. Commemorative
opportunities are still available. Contact Elaine Simmons for
more information 892-2540, ext. 132.
If you read the news release on our Seniors, you noticed that
they received over $7,400,000 in scholarship offers. They have
been accepted to 68 different college and universities in 19
states. I am proud of them and congratulate them on their
successes and wish them well in the years ahead. We take time
to celebrate the impact this group has had upon us all. They
have grown and blossomed in their years at SSA. We are
proud of their accomplishments. They have worked hard
and contributed much to SSA. Now is a time of transition as
our seniors embark upon their futures and journey on to new
paths in their lives. I congratulate them on their successes and
wish them well in the years ahead. We have high hopes for
successful futures for the Class of 2009. The Benedictine
tradition of prayer, work, study and community goes with
them to become a natural part of their everyday life.
The dictionary defines hope as the “desire with expectation
of obtaining what is desired; trust; reliance.” We so often take
things for granted. Hope is not a passive virtue but requires
our active participation if we are to achieve what we desire.
We cannot just sit back and wait for things to happen, we
must exert the effort and take proactive steps to ensure that
we will realize our goals. Please make every effort to be
involved in the life of SSA. Through your involvement you
will experience the deeper value of your daughter’s education.
We hope you will join us at the various meetings, activities, and
events planned for you to come together to learn firsthand
what is happening at SSA as well as to be informed about
topics that will help in dealing with your teenager.
We look forward to beginning a new school year with you
and your daughters in August. Until then, may the remainder
of your summer free you to experience joy and peace, renewal
and recreation of your hearts and souls, spending time together
and enjoying each other. The office will be open on August 3
should you have any questions that this newsletter cannot
answer.
Let us remember that Christ can calm the storms we go
through on a daily basis in our lives if we turn to Him often in
prayer and frequent reception of the Eucharist. May God bless
you and hold you in the palm of His hand.
their required summer reading and turn in their summer reading packets in Homeroom on
August 17. Math packets are done on Edline. The math packet is not going to be graded, BUT, it
is a partial review of the material from their previous math class. The purpose of the problem sets
is to have them practice the skills that they will be using in their next math class. Also, they should
be practicing their ACT skills using the ACT online studyguide.
assignment. All students are required to complete the summer reading assignment.) If you have
any questions regarding your schedule, the counselors will be available on August 3.
sure to mark that you will receive emails from SSA. If you have any questions or problems setting up your account,
RETURNING STUDENTS: It is critical that both you and your parents activate your separate EDLINE accounts.
Note that there are TWO accounts with individual access codes, one for the parent and one for the student. It is
equally important that parents provide a viable e-mail address for the school to use.
All communications, both informative as well as safety issues, will be addressed through this means.
SCHEDULES and demographic information (homerooms and locker numbers) for current and new students are
available on Edline. Please bring your schedule to Book Day, Orientation and the first day of class. If you have an
issue with your schedule, please send an email detailing your concern to: schedules@ssacad.com. Schedule issues
WILL NOT be addressed until August 1. It is the school’s policy to adjust only those schedules for which the
school is in error.
The Golden Blues were named Camp Champions for being s
overall the top of all teams in attendance at the LSU summer
camp. They received Superior ratings for both Home Routine
and Team Competition Dance and won the Judges award for
being the team the judges were most impressed with and the
staff most enjoyed working with.
The St. Paul’s Cheerleaders, coached by Audrey Pool, attended the
Southwestern Cheerleading Association camp in San Destin, Fl. The
squad competed in three events a home dance and cheer competition
the first night and a cheer competition on the final day. The team
received blue ribbons for each of the three routines as well as being
awarded a camp spirit stick each day for showing outstanding spirit
toward one another and the other teams. Scores from all of three
competitions were totaled on the final day of camp and the St.
Paul’s Cheerleaders were named Camp Champions in the Advanced
Division. Five members of the squad, Laine Bordelon, Lexi
Patterson, Sarah Allain, Bailey Sellen and Lindsey Silva, were
nominated as All American Cheerleaders. This nomination is given
by the SCA staff to members of each squad that stand out not
only in talent but in positive attitude. Being nominated is an honor!
Each selected member then learns a cheer and dance that they have
to perform in front of a panel of SCA judges. On the final day
Sarah Allain and Bailey Sellen were named All American Cheerleaders.
dance. They achieved All Star status as a team (one of
only two teams in their division). They have been invited
