Ji Hye Jung is Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Percussion</strong> at the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Kansas. Born in South Korea, Ms. Jung began concertizing at<br />

the age <strong>of</strong> nine. She has performed over 100 concerts as a soloist<br />

with every major orchestra in Korea. Soon after relocating to the<br />

United States in 2004, Ms. Jung garnered consecutive first prizes at<br />

the 2006 Linz International Marimba Competition and the 2007<br />

Yale Gordon Concerto Competition in Baltimore.<br />

Ms. Jung frequently performs with many <strong>of</strong> today's most important<br />

conductors and instrumentalists. She has performed as soloist with<br />

David Robertson conducting an all Messiaen program in Carnegie<br />

Hall. Shortly after, Ms. Jung made her concerto debut with the<br />

Houston Symphony under the direction <strong>of</strong> its <strong>Music</strong> Director Hans<br />

Graf. Ms. Jung has performed at the West Cork Chamber <strong>Music</strong><br />

Festival in Ireland, The Intimacy <strong>of</strong> Creativity in Hong Kong,<br />

Grand Teton <strong>Music</strong> Festival, Martha’s Vineyard Chamber <strong>Music</strong><br />

Society, Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Germany and the<br />

Grachtenfestival in Holland. Recently she has presented<br />

masterclasses at the Curtis Institute, Peabody Conservatory, Rice<br />

University and Beijing's Central Conservatory and at universities<br />

throughout the United States.<br />

With the <strong>Percussion</strong> Repertoire still in its formative state, Ms. Jung<br />

feels strongly about collaborating with composers to further the<br />

creation <strong>of</strong> a new voice for the art form. She has commissioned<br />

and premiered new works by several important composers, such as<br />

Michael Torke, Kevin Puts, Alejandro Viñao, Paul Lansky, John<br />

Serry, Lucas Ligeti, and Jason Treuting. Jung is also Principal<br />

<strong>Percussion</strong>ist with the west coast-based Camerata Pacifica, with<br />

whom she will premier works by Bright Sheng and Huang Ruo.<br />

Ji Hye Jung completed a Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> degree from the Yale<br />

School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> and a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> degree at the Peabody<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Johns Hopkins University, both under the tutelage <strong>of</strong><br />

Robert van Sice. As an artist endorser, she represents Pearl/Adams<br />

instruments, Vic Firth sticks, and Zildjian cymbals.<br />

Francis K<strong>of</strong>i is an Ewe, <strong>of</strong> the Wotsi (“Waachi”) sub-division in<br />

Togo. He has studied and performed extensively in various parts in<br />

Ghana, as well as in Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and<br />

Zimbabwe. His is accomplished in a vast repertoire <strong>of</strong> traditional<br />

drumming pieces and accompanying dances.<br />

K<strong>of</strong>i was a dancer and master drummer with the Ghana Dance<br />

ensemble for many years, originally based at the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Ghana (Legon). The ensemble was later established at the National<br />

Theatre (Accra) as the National Dance Company <strong>of</strong> Ghana. During<br />

this association, K<strong>of</strong>i performed in many international venues,<br />

winning rave reviews and awards.<br />

K<strong>of</strong>i has taught in the United States at several universities and in<br />

1996/97 was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship/Artist-In-Residence<br />

at the State University <strong>of</strong> New York <strong>College</strong> at Fredonia.<br />

When in Ghana, he established the Hayor dance Company in<br />

Accra. Since then, he has dedicated his effort to bringing cultural<br />

awareness to local communities through drumming and dance<br />

workshop, classes and performance. As artistic director <strong>of</strong> Hayor<br />

Bibimma Dance Theater, he seeks to preserve the traditional music<br />

and dance <strong>of</strong> his ancestors and share its’ heritage. Selected as<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Minnesota State Arts Board and Compas Global<br />

Arts roster, Francis K<strong>of</strong>i regularly teaches dance, drumming<br />

workshops and stories at grade schools and high schools. Teaching<br />

the richness <strong>of</strong> his culture is a fulfilling and dynamic way to share<br />

his passion, knowledge and expertise.
