More information about The Australian Consumer Law can be found on page 41 What is the Australian Consumer Law and why is it significant The Australian Consumer Law (ACL) commenced on 1 January 2011. It unifies and rationalises an untidy web of 17 different Commonwealth, State and Territory consumer protection laws. As a result there is now one uniform Australian Consumer Law that applies in all jurisdictions throughout Australia and across all sectors of the economy, thereby significantly reducing business compliance costs. What was your aim in writing The Australian Consumer Law The changes brought about by the ACL have created the need for a new book to explain the obligations of businesses and the rights of consumers under the new law. It seeks to explain the scope and importance of the statutory causes of action created by the ACL. Throughout the work an attempt is made to explain how the various protections inter-relate, the scope for overlap, and why each provision is necessary to provide complete protection. Who is likely to benefit from reading this work The aim of the work is to provide legal practitioners, business people and students with an analysis of all aspects of the ACL. Stephen Corones Stephen Corones was appointed a Professor within the Faculty of Law at Queensland University of Technology in 1994. In 2007, he was engaged by the Productivity Commission to prepare a Comparative Study of State and Commonwealth Consumer Protection legislation and to advise the Productivity Commission generally in relation to its terms of reference for the reform of Australia’s consumer protection laws. In 2008, he was appointed by the Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs to the Commonwealth Consumer Affairs Advisory Council (CCAAC) for a three year term. The appointment was renewed in July 2011 for a further three year term. In 2009, Stephen led the CCAAC inquiry into the adequacy of existing laws on implied conditions and warranties, the existence of extended warranties and their interaction laws on implied conditions and warranties in Australia. 16 www.thomsonreuters.com.au/lawbooks
