Foreword
by M. Ex. Comp. E. Cyril Ferguson,
District Grand King.
Iam very pleased to pen a few
words for this the Eighth
Edition of our Banner magazine.
From the First Edition the magazine
has gone from strength to strength.
The articles supplied by our chapter members has
increased significantly, no doubt the Production Team,
quietly coaxing companions to submit items for
publication, is having an effect. I see the Banner as
an excellent vehicle, not only to promote and
increase our charity giving, but also to engender
more awareness of the life and history of our
chapters. I would encourage everyone to purchase a
copy and even to buy a second to give to a brother
who is not yet exalted!
I am very pleased to be afforded this opportunity
of saying a big “Thank you” to our Editor for the
dedication and meticulous preliminary work he does
in preparing the magazine for printing and also the
Assistant Editor, Drew Coid, for giving of his time and
talents to record photographically, as well as in print,
important events at convocations over a wide area.
Cyril Ferguson
CHAPTER
31•Atrium
A New
Chapter
Readers of The Banner may
recall that the 2007 Edition
contained an article by the
Registrar of Ardath Royal Arch
Chapter No.573 in which he set out
some of the strengths of that
Chapter but pointed out that
dwindling numbers could lead to its
demise.He invited other Chapters in
a similar position, which were
interested in discussing a way
forward, to contact him. Several
Chapters responded and discussions
began in earnest in August that year.
Right at the outset,it was agreed
that amalgamation was the way
forward and, rather than risk
creating the impression that some
Chapters were being "taken over" by
another,existing warrants should be
returned to Dublin and a totally new
Chapter be formed.
Although as many as eight
Chapters participated in the
discussions at some stage, only four
- Royal Arch Chapter numbers 229,
259, 469 and 573 decided to
proceed to amalgamation.
Discussions continued into 2008,
first Officers were selected, by-laws
prepared,and a petition presented to
Supreme Grand Chapter.
Saturday, 25 October 2008 saw
the fruits of their labours when The
Atrium Royal Arch Chapter No. 31
was born. As an atrium is the central
feature of the adjacent and recently
constructed Victoria Centre so it is
anticipated that the new Chapter will
provide a focus for the regeneration
of Royal Arch activity in central
Belfast.
Just before 3.00 p.m. on that
Saturday, in the Quigley Chapter
Room, Freemasons' Hall, Arthur
M. Ex. & Supreme Grand King, M.Ex. Comp. Michael J.Ward, and the
Foundation members of Atrium R.A.C. No. 31
Square, Belfast, the Most Excellent
District Grand King, Most Excellent
welcomed and saluted, the arrival of
the Most Excellent and Supreme
Grand King, Most Excellent
Supreme Grand King was conducted
to the dais where he was warmly
welcomed, offered the Sceptre, and
invited to preside. Having accepted
the invitation, he was saluted in
accordance with ancient custom.
He expressed his pleasure at
being afforded the opportunity to
preside over such an infrequent
event and proceeded to conduct the
Ceremony of Constitution,
Consecration and Dedication of the
new Chapter. During this ceremony,
important parts were played by the
Most Excellent District Grand King,
his Deputy, Right Excellent
Companion Jon. McA. Pollock, the
Assistant District Grand King, Right
by Alex Ireland
Occasional Convocation of District
Chapter was closed and the Atrium
Royal Arch Chapter No. 31 opened.
The Most Excellent Deputy Grand
King installed the Council of the new
Chapter - Excellent Companions D.
Gordon Lynn, Harold Marsden and
Brian Mooney as King, High Priest
and Chief Scribe respectively.This he
did in a masterly and exceptional
manner, which was as expected, by
those who know him.
The newly installed Excellent
King, Ex. Comp. D. Gordon Lynn,
proceeded to invest the remaining
Officers in exemplary fashion.
Afterwards, in a brief address, he
stated that he felt greatly honoured
and privileged at having been
selected to serve as King of this new
Chapter. He remarked that the
formation of a new Chapter,in these
days of falling membership,was both
bold and courageous, and it was up
to the Foundation Members to
work to ensure its success. He
thanked all those who had taken part
in the Ceremony and,in particular,all
those who had participated in the
discussions leading up to the
formation of the new Chapter, the
Constituting Officers and all those
who had worked so hard in the
arranging of the day’s events.
After some other routine
business, the Chapter was closed
and the Companions retired to the
Dining Room, where a sumptuous
dinner was provided and served by
the resident caterer and her staff.
The customary toasts were
honoured. This proved to be the
perfect end to a wonderful day,
which will live in the memories of all
who were there.
The History of
Anointing Oil and
its use in the R.A.C.
by V. Ex. Comp. W. T. Brown, RAC No. 313
and D. of C. Dist. G.R.A.C. of Antrim
INTRODUCTION
In keeping with the Rules and
Regulations of the Supreme
Grand Royal Arch Chapter of
Ireland, oil is not used in the
installation ceremony but it is
used in other Constitutions in
their installation ceremonies. Oil
is referred to in the context of
1st Samuel 16 verse 13 where it
reads:-
“Then Samuel took the horn
of oil, and anointed him in the
midst of his brethren: and the
Spirit of the LORD came upon
David from that day forward. So
Samuel rose up, and went to
Ramah.”
It is pointed out that when
anything was being dedicated to
a religious purpose it was
anointed with oil.The Ark of the
Covenant and all its Holy vessels
were anointed with oil. Aaron
and his sons were dedicated to
the Holy Priesthood by a similar
ceremony. This has been passed
down through the ages.
Monarchs are anointed in a
similar ceremony. This short
article looks at the use of oil
today for the purposes of
dedication, coronation etc. We
do know that oil is used in the
dedication of a new Craft Lodge
as a token of Peace, Love and
Harmony.
RECENTLY IT WAS USED IN
OUR M. EX. DIST. G. R.A. C.
OF ANTRIM.
It is unusual today for one to
be present at the Constitution of
a new Royal Arch Chapter, but,
such was the case on Saturday
25th October 2008 when Atrium
Royal Arch Chapter No. 31 was
Constituted, Consecrated and
Dedicated. Oil was used in the
very moving ceremony.
Our M. Ex. District Grand
King presented the oil saying, “I
present you this oil, one of the
elements of Consecration, to be
used by you in accordance with
ancient custom.”
The M. Ex. and Supreme
Grand King poured some of the
oil saying, “I pour this oil as a
symbol of Peace, Love and
Unanimity.”
THE USE OF OIL IN
CORONATIONS
The anointing has the deepest
significance during the ceremony
which goes back to at least
Anglo-Saxon times.The Anointing
Spoon goes back over 800 years
to the time of King John, the son
of Henry 11 and Elanor of
Aquitaine. The recipe for the
Anointing Oil contains oils of
orange, roses, cinnamon, musk
and ambergris. Usually a batch is
made to last a few Coronations.
In May 1941, a bomb hit the
Deanery destroying the phial
containing the anointing oil so a
new batch had to be made up.
The pharmacy that had mixed the
previous anointing oil had gone
out of business but the recipe
was found and the oil made.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE
CEREMONY OF ANOINTING
QUEEN ELIZABETH 11 (1953)
The Queen shall sit down in
King Edward's Chair (placed in
the midst of the Area over
against the Altar, with a fald-stool
before it), wherein she is to be
anointed. Four Knights of the
Garter shall hold a rich pall of
silk, or cloth of gold: the Dean of
Westminster, taking the Ampulla
and Spoon from off the Altar,
shall hold them ready, pouring
some Holy Oil into the Spoon,
and with it the Archbishop shall
anoint the Queen in the form of
a cross:
On the palms of both hands,
ANOINTING OIL, ITS
MEANING AND HISTORY
TERMINOLOGY: To be
“anointed” is, among other
things, to be made sacred
(consecrated); to be set apart
12
www.dgracantrim.org

and dedicated to serve God; to
be endowed with enabling gifts
and grace; to be divinely
designated, inaugurated, or
chosen for some purpose. The
English word ‘anoint’ derives from
the ancient Latin ‘inunctus’,
meaning “smear with oil.”
FIRST
SCRIPTURAL
REFERENCE: The great Hebrew
patriarch Jacob (divinely renamed
“Israel”) makes a sacred vow to
God after anointing a stone pillar
by pouring oil on top of it [Gen.
28:16-22; 31:13; 35:14]. Jacob
names the pillar’s locale “Bethel”
(or Beit-El, meaning “House of
God.) By pouring this anointing
oil, Jacob “consecrated” the pillar,
thereby rendering it an altar holy
unto God.
THE HOLY ANOINTING OIL: In
Exodus chapter 30, the LORD
tells Moses to make a very special
and “holy anointing oil” of “the
finest of spices,” including
“flowing (liquid) myrrh,” “sweetsmelling
cinnamon,” “fragrant
cane,” “cassia,” and “olive oil”.
This highly perfumed oil was used
to consecrate (set apart) the
articles used in Temple worship,
including the ark of the
testimony, the holy tabernacle,
and all its furnishings, which made
them “Holy.”
PRIESTS: In Exodus, the LORD
identifies anointing oil as an
acceptable offering unto Him [Ex.
25:6]. Furthermore, He directs
that Aaron and his sons be
anointed, consecrated, and
sanctified as holy priests to
minister unto Him [Ex. 28:41] and
that Aaron be anointed as Israel’s
High Priest through the pouring
of anointing oil on his head and
garments [Ex. 29:7,21,29]. (Psalm
133:1-2: compare ‘harmonious
brotherhood’ to “fragrant oil on
the head that runs down over the
beard of Aaron…”).
KINGS: In Scripture’s first
kingly anointing, the prophet
Samuel pours oil on the head of
King Saul [1Sa. 10:1].
