President’s Message
As you know, the HPCA members voted to continue to
lease our hall from the City and plan to arrange a sub-lease
with another group provided we can get that all arranged by
December 31 of this year.
Having made this decision gives us certain rights, but
it also demands of us certain responsibilities. Having our
own community hall gives us the right to hold community
events at the hall for little to no charge if we wish. Examples
of these events would be dinners, family movies, Earth Day
celebrations, BBQs, Music in the Park, meetings about
development issues, Wine & Cheese events, etc.

However, our responsibilities that come with
having our own hall include the repairs and
maintenance of the hall. And, because we are a nonprofi
t volunteer-run organization we need to save
money where we can by doing many of the hall
maintenance and repair tasks with volunteers from
the community doing the work and sourcing the
supplies to do the work.
So, from time to time we will ask for your help
to do various tasks or help at a Work Bee. We’d
like you to commit to helping where you can, and
maybe you can bring a neighbour or a relative to
help as well. Th e old adage of “many hands make

Cancer Society’s Relay For Life to help in the fi ght against cancer.

would require 15 hours of time each if only 2 people step forward to volunteer. Th at’s a lot
to ask of just 2 people!
So, from the Community Association end, we’ll try to give as much notice and as many
details as we can for tasks that need doing at the hall (and other volunteer opportunities such
as serving on committees), and I hope that the next time we ask for volunteers to help out
with something at the hall or with the Association that you’ll come out to contribute. Or if
you’re not available at that time or for that task, ask if there’s something else you could do at
a time that will fi t into your schedule.
Check elsewhere in this newsletter for more information on how you can help your
community association.
In late September, several spots of graffi ti and tagging appeared in Highland Park. Th e ones
I became aware of have been reported to the City and have been discussed with our Calgary
Police Service Community Liaison Offi cer. Th e City advises that the best strategy for dealing
with graffi ti when it occurs is to fi rst take a picture of it, make note of the address or closest
intersection (i.e. SW corner of Centre St. and 40 Ave. NW), and report it to 3-1-1.
If your property gets “tagged” you should clean it up as soon as possible by washing it off
or painting over it. Th e idea is that if graffi ti is removed as soon as possible, the culprits won’t
have the satisfaction of seeing their “tag” on display for long, and will therefore learn not to
tag that location again.

Ward 4 Update
Wastewater Treatment in Calgary
Have you ever wondered what happens to the wastewater that
drains from our sinks, tubs and toilets? It’s not a pleasant subject, but
my curiosity got the better of me.
I decided to see for myself how the City of Calgary handles wastewater.
After all, proper wastewater treatment is essential in protecting
both public health and our environment.
My staff and I toured the Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Centre,
one of three plants that treat over 430 megalitres of wastewater daily.
The treatment process includes screening out larger solids, settling
tanks, and using naturally occurring microorganisms instead of
chemicals to remove organic matter. Filtration systems remove more
impurities and ultraviolet techniques disinfect. Biosolids created during
the process are used as fertilizer on local farmlands, and methane
gas collected is used to heat the building.
The innovative and earth-friendly processes used impressed me so
much; I posted a video of our tour on my websites. It was definitely a
learning experience that, once again, reminded me of the important
role the City plays in our daily lives.

Centre Street Construction – Update
The Centre Street Reconstruction and Transit Priority Project between
42 Avenue and 54 Avenue N.W. began on July 4. The project
team intends to complete the reconstruction of the road bed and the
new Transit only lanes by late fall (late November or early December).
However, road construction is very weather sensitive and fall
weather can be unpredictable. Therefore, when the road construction
season ends, all lanes on Centre Street and access to side roads will
be restored for the winter. Any work that may not be completed this
year will be carried over until next spring/summer, if necessary.
Construction began on the west half of Centre Street between 42
Avenue and Laycock Drive N.W. This west side construction was
extended to 54 Avenue N.W. in August. This work reduced the road
to two lanes of traffic on the east side. These stages of construction
are now complete.
In the middle of October, construction will have fully shifted to
the east side of Centre Street, between 42 Avenue and 54 Avenue
N.W. and traffic will be moved to the west side of Centre. Some lanes
and driveways will need to be closed at Centre Street in order to complete
this stage of construction. Affected residents and businesses will
receive hand-delivered notices of any closures. As sections of road are
completed, they will be reopened to traffic.
Some Calgary Transit stops will be temporarily re-located or closed
as a result of construction.
Because of ongoing lane reductions, motorists and Transit users
should expect traffic delays to continue through this area until the
end of the construction season in late fall. When the construction is

done, the road will be completely re-built in this area, sidewalks will
be wider, and the added Transit-only lanes will improve bus traffic
movement through this area.
We understand that road work is an inconvenience to everyone
and we appreciate your continuing patience and understanding during
this project.

at: Huntington Hills Athletic Park at Hunstrom Drive and 4 St.
NE, or Confederation Park at 905 30 Ave. NW, or North Haven
Community Centre at 5003 North Haven Dr. NW. Check the City
of Calgary website, www.calgary.ca for more information and search
for leaf and pumpkin composting. These locations are not meant for
other yard waste. The locations are accepting leaves and pumpkins
from now until November 11th.
Highland Park has a new Calgary Police Service (CPS) Community
Liaison Officer (CLO). The boundaries for the communities Marv
Glaser is looking after have been changed, so the new CLO looking
after Highland Park will be Will Johnson. Thanks for everything
Marv, and we’re looking forward to working with you Will!

Black Beans, Tomato,
and Feta Pasta Salad
INGREDIENTS:
¼ cup olive oil
1 large garlic clove, fi nely chopped
1 540 ml can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 pound fresh, ripe tomatoes, diced
grated zest and juice of 1 large lime
1- 2 tsp Tabasco sauce
½ tsp dried oregano
1 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp salt, to taste
¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro or parsely
1 cup feta cheese, crumbled
8 ounces rotella pasta (wagon wheels)
PREPARATION: Combine all ingredients except feta and
cilantro and leave at room temperature for an hour. Cook
pasta and drain well. Toss with cilantro and feta. Pasta
can be served warm or chilled.

Bunbukan Karate: This non-competitive program focusses on
providing practical defensive strategies against habitual acts of violence
within the tradition of old style karate. Two classes are being off ered:
1) A child class for children 6 – 13 years of age. Parent participation
is strongly encouraged and 2) A second class for teens and adults with
higher intensity and complexity.

Georges P Vanier School
Every September in schools across the nation, hundreds of thousands
of students run to raise funds for the fight against cancer. The
last school day of September saw hundreds of Georges P. Vanier students
run for this cause.
Georges P. Vanier has been working with the City of Calgary to develop
programs to enhance the student experience. Four programs are
now in full swing. Konnects seeks to help with the transition to grade
7 from elementary school. Act Out for our grade 8 is an innovative
school-based program for junior high age youth which uses drama as
a way to learn, grow and deal with tough situations and life choices.
The same issues are taken on in grade with the Spirit Girls program
and the Wize Guyz program. The Wize Guyz program at Georges P.
Vanier was featured in the Globe & Mail last spring.
November will be exciting at Georges P. Vanier: Volleyball playoff
and the start of Basketball. Report cards go home on November 23rd,
and the fall term assembly is taking place at 12:30 on Nov 28th in
the gymnasium.

AREA SCHOOL NEWS
Students had a very busy month in October. The clubs are in
full swing: YMCA Leadership Club, Computer Club and Green
Thumbs. The Green Thumbs group visited the vacant lot across from
the school to see the changes that fall brings to the plants. The Book
Fair was held and school photos taken.
The grade 5/6 class visited Fish Creek Park while grade 4/5 students
went to the Museum of the Regiments. Students in the Skill
classes began their swimming lessons at Emily Follensbee School. The
Earth Rangers, an environmental group, visited the school.
Grade 6 participated in Free the Children “We Day” rally at the
Saddledome on October 24
November 5, 6, 7, Aussie X Program teaches students how to play
cooperative, non-competitive Australian Games.

Buchanan Parent Council continues to collect Campbell’s Soup

We are still being beautified. Panelling is being installed
under the windows that went in last spring.
This should make the school much more attractive
and more of an aesthetic asset to the community.

James Fowler High School
The staff of James Fowler have planned an excit-
ing, productive and engaging school year and it is our
wish that all of our students will take full advantage
of all the wonderful and rich opportunities that the
school community has to offer.
Our enrollment this year is approximately fifteen
hundred students (an increase of one hundred students
from the previous year). Most of our students
travel from many northeast neighborhoods and a
few of the newly developed northwest communities
in addition to the communities surrounding James
Fowler. As a result of our increase in students, we
have been supported by Calgary Transit who has added an additional
bus and re-routed existing bus routes to better service our students.
In its fifth year, our Arts-Centered Learning alternative program
continues to offer students an opportunity to learn the core high
school curriculum through an arts-based focus. In its third year, our
Advanced Placement program continues to attract many students
who wish more academic rigor while completing the core high school

curriculum. We are also pleased to off er a full range of core and option
Knowledge and Employability courses for students in all grades.
At James Fowler it is our goal to meet the educational needs of all
of our students and also to improve our facility for our students. As
such we have installed thirty new cafeteria tables and have installed
two new counters where students can eat their lunch or study. Also
we have updated our library bookshelves and have created a student
study space. As we continue to improve the facility at James Fowler
High School for our students, we are focused on creating a more
student-focused space infused with color and energy.
Fall is both an exciting and busy time at James Fowler High School
as we focus on the start of the fi rst semester. Teachers have created
opportunities to take students beyond the classroom experience by
off ering a full range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities
through clubs, fi ne and performing arts, volunteerism, athletics and
curriculum-based clubs and activities. Whether students are a new
grade ten student, a new student to James Fowler or a continuing
grade eleven and twelve student, we actively encourage all students to
get involved in the community of the school and become involved in
as many activities as possible.
Our School Council provides an excellent opportunity for parents
and guardians to learn about the school and to have a voice in the
education our children. School Council meetings are held the fi rst
Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the library conference
room. If you are a parent of a James Fowler High School student, we
would welcome your attendance and support at our monthly meetings.
We are appreciative of our very supportive parents on our School
Council who are committed to improving our school. Last year, in
addition to our School Council members, parents volunteered their
time over two days at a Casino to raise funds for our students. With
this generous donation to our school last year, we were able to purchase
a new 2013 Bluebird 65 passenger bus. Th is year our casino
is scheduled for November 4 and 5. If you are a parent of a James
Fowler student and would like to assist our parents with this Casino,
please contact the school.
We are excited to have full service technical shops that are available
to our community. If you have a need for service in Autobody, Auto
Mechanics, Cosmetology or catering from our Commercial Foods
program, please contact the school.
