At the outset, I would like to thank
you all for reposing faith in me as the
head, CII Uttar Pradesh for the year
2009-10. During this year CII Uttar
Pradesh carried forward the theme
‘Growth in Challenging Times’, which
was reflected in all the activities
undertaken.
The year has been a challenging one
for the Indian Industry with the
downturn. Several sectors such as
real estate, petroleum imports,
cement, steel, auto and exports were
badly affected. Small businesses
also bore the brunt.
But the silver lining was the domestic
market, particularly the rural market
which remained relatively strong.
Fortunately, the crisis has now
receded and Indian services &
manufacturing sector is penetrating
the global markets once again.
In retrospect, all our endeavors were
in consonance with the state's
objective towards salvaging growth
in the global recessionary period and
facilitating economic growth as an
active partner with the state
government harnessing the state’s
immense potential.
The year saw a number of interactive
sessions with key government
officials. CII continued to be
represented on major working
groups and advisory boards of the
state government like the Tripartite
Labor Committee, Council of
Science and Technology (IPR
Division), Environment Policy
Sugar Tech 09 was timely & much relevant for
the beleaguered sugar industry. All stakeholders
including the sugar industry, farmers, experts
and the state government together were present
at a common platform to discuss and work out a
good package for the farmers in light of the
shorter seasons in the sugar industry. I am
particularly pleased to share that this led to many
strategic decisions and several initiatives to ride
the sugar industry out of trouble times.
CII Uttar Pradesh worked to preserve the
traditional heritage and art of the state. To save
the Intellectual Property Protection of identified
Geographical Indications of UP, CII signed an
MOU with the Export Promotion Bureau,
Government of Uttar Pradesh for facilitating the
GI registration of six products in Uttar Pradesh
including Locks of Aligarh, Sports Goods of
Meerut, Patchworks of Rampur, Kababs of
Lucknow and Petha, Dalmot & Marble Work of
Agra.
Tree plantation drives, water management and
HIV / AIDS awareness were high on agenda this
year.
Our future activities need to keep up the
momentum on key areas like enhancing
employment, tourism, infrastructure, agriculture,
food processing and creating conducive
environment for the growth of industry in the
state.
I am sure that the CII Uttar Pradesh State Council
2010-11 would carry forward the initiatives taken
this year and contribute positively to the inclusive
development of Uttar Pradesh.
Mr Ramesh Suri
Chairman
CII UP State Council
The State Council facilitated the working of 11
ITIs, adopted in the recent past at various
locations. The Council also facilitated Modular
Employable Skills Scheme (MES) under the
national Skills Development Initiative (SDI) to
help school drop-outs and shop-floor workers.
Over 1500 Vocational Training Providers (VTPs)
have been established providing training in a
variety of skills across the state.
6th Northern Regional Council was organised in
Lucknow, CII Uttar Pradesh was fortunate and happy
to host the colourful evening Shaam -E- Awadh
graced by His Excellency Mr BL Joshi, Governor
of Uttar Pradesh.
Sugar Tech 2009: "Shorter Seasons
in Sugar Industry - Opportunities &
Challenges"
September 30, 2009: Lucknow
With the objective to review the substantial fall in
the production of sugar in the state, assess
challenges & opportunities and arrive at
meaningful solutions to benefit the farmers,
industry and the government, CII Uttar Pradesh
organized a one day conference on “Shorter
Seasons in Sugar Industry – Opportunities &
Challenges - Sugar Tech 2009”.
Welcoming the participants, Mr Ramesh Suri,
Chairman, CII Uttar Pradesh asserted the aim said
"we are here to ensure that the Indian Sugar
Industry finds its place in the sun again". Further
he brought to the notice, the issues faced by the
farmers relating to their sizeable chunk of money
not being cleared by the sugar factories and delay
in announcing the levy price by the government,
which ultimately leave farmers distressed.
Geographical Indication (GI) is one form of
Intellectual Property Protection which can protect
these intangible assets for identity and reputation
in the National and International Market. In due
course, with proper enforcement mechanism
these GIs can provide business opportunities and
Wealth Creation to the end users that are artisans,
weavers and craftsman. The GI can also be
commercially leveraged for enhancing incomes of
such artisans while providing assurance of
product quality to consumers.
With this perspective, Export Promotion Bureau,
Government of Uttar Pradesh invited CII Uttar
Pradesh State Office to sign a Memorandum of
Understanding, for facilitating the GI registration of
six products in Uttar Pradesh. These products
include Locks of Aligarh, Sports goods of Meerut,
Patchworks of Rampur, Kababs of Lucknow and
Petha, Dalmot & Marble Work of Agra.
CII Uttar Pradesh State Office has initiated this
project in association with Andhra Pradesh
Technology Development and Promotion Center
(APTDC).
6th Northern Regional Council
Meeting
February 5, 2010: Lucknow
Mr Atul Kumar Gupta, Chief Secretary and Chief
Guest for the session felt that in the current
situation, it is pertinent to look at long term
measures and addressed the needs of the most
important state holder: the farmer. He suggested
for a loyalty bonus system or fixed cane price for
two years, which can be introduced for
maintaining a long term relationship between
industry and farmer.
The technical sessions of Sugar Tech 09 included
a session on agriculture to address issues in
Sugarcane Development and Marketing. The
other sessions were on CEO's perspective on
industry issues and on engineering & technology
to share best practices in sugar & allied industries.
The conference saw participation of over 150
delegates from sugar and allied sectors from
different parts of Uttar Pradesh and the NCR
region.
