U and K signatures) make these sediments an attractive exploration target (Figure 6-3).
Uranium mineralisation is usually contained within medium to coarse grained
sandstone horizons that have been deposited within a continental fluvial or marine
sedimentary environment. Proximal and confining interbedded permeable shale or
mudstone units play an important role in channelising oxidising uranium-bearing
groundwaters that precipitate uranium upon encountering reducing conditions often
provided by carbonaceous or organic matter. Later stage faulting may provide localised
remobilisation and upgrade of uranium tenor.
6.4 Historical and recent exploration
Prior to 2008, no historical exploration work appears to be have been completed over
the Sena project. The south eastern exposures of the Sena Formation were drill-tested
in the 1970s and in 2005 by several oil companies, although the results of these holes
are not known. Following review and reprocessing of regional airborne geophysical
data (Huntings 1981), Twigg Exploration and Mining Lda (Twigg) completed a series of
radon cup surveys aimed at testing airborne anomalies identified by Twigg. The
decision to complete radon cup surveys was based on the better depth penetration of
the method along with the flat terrain and development of quaternary sediments, lags
and localised mbugas that would mask any ground and airborne gamma ray detection
methods.
It is not known what methodology was employed by Twigg in order to delineate
airborne anomalies and cursory inspection of the regional airborne data does not
suggest any uranium anomalism within the Sena Project area (Figure 6-3).
