• <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> is owned <strong>and</strong><br />

managed by<br />

Houston Audubon<br />

• Up 30,000 pairs of<br />

breeding birds <strong>and</strong><br />

18 species have<br />

been counted<br />

utilizing the isl<strong>and</strong><br />

• Includes the formerly<br />

endangered brown<br />

pelican <strong>and</strong><br />

threatened whitefaced<br />

ibis

• To stop or slow<br />

shoreline erosion<br />

on <strong>North</strong> <strong>Deer</strong><br />

<strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong><br />

• Erosion has been<br />

measured up to<br />

20 feet per year<br />

on the isl<strong>and</strong><br />

• Marsh <strong>and</strong> isl<strong>and</strong><br />

restoration was a<br />

secondary goal

• Project Engineer: URS Corporation<br />

• Project Design: Combination of rock<br />

breakwater, rock armoring <strong>and</strong> rock groins<br />

• Contractor: Bertucci Contracting<br />

• Construction began February 24, 2003-<br />

completed May 11, 2003

• Total Budget: $2,317,972<br />

• Partners: TPWD, GBEP, USFWS, EPA Gulf<br />

of Mexico Program, TCEQ, Houston<br />

Audubon, NRG, Meadows Foundation<br />

• Project Design: Combination of rock<br />

breakwater, rock armoring <strong>and</strong> rock groins<br />

• Contractor: Luhr Brothers<br />

• Construction began December 18, 2007 <strong>and</strong><br />
