Without health insurance through work, the single mother used to pay her mortgage first and worry about medical bills later. Dr. Mark Smith introduced her to Access to Care, a program that matches low-income, working residents with a network of free and low-cost health care services. Brenda now has peace of mind that she has access to quality care. “It is nice to know that if I get sick, I can afford to see my doctor,” she said. In Summit County, an estimated 22,000 residents are uninsured and don’t qualify for Medicaid. A $ 20,000 grant to Healthy Connections Network will help link them to a network of more than 200 volunteer health care providers in the Access to Care program.
