<strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />
OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES<br />
Serves as a single point <strong>of</strong> contact in school system technology planning. This <strong>of</strong>fice implements the <strong>Alabama</strong><br />
Technology Plan for K-12 <strong>Education</strong>, provides support and assistance in filing for E-rate discounts, and supports LEA's<br />
in technology planning. It is responsible for administering Federal Grant Programs for Technology, responding to<br />
requests from organizations and agencies needing technology data, and maintaining a database <strong>of</strong> technology compiled<br />
from yearly survey reports. This division also serves as technology member for SDE teams to provide on-site support to<br />
Alert II schools, assistance with system monitoring, help in in-service needs, and other technology related issues. The<br />
Office <strong>of</strong> Technology Initiatives coordinates and implements all aspects <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>Education</strong>al Technology<br />
Conference. Its mission is to use technology as a tool to prepare the student <strong>of</strong> today to become a productive, contributing<br />
citizen <strong>of</strong> tomorrow.<br />
DIRECTOR – MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS<br />
Responsible for maintaining and coordinating data systems services to the State <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and local<br />
school systems. This includes data base management, information collection and distribution, report preparation, s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />
development and project management. Activities include State <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> employee training, local<br />
education agency staff training, inventory and disposition <strong>of</strong> equipment, equipment repair and maintenance.<br />

ADULT AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION<br />
The adult education section provides educational opportunities for adults to acquire the basic skills necessary to function<br />
in society and to have a positive effect on the literacy <strong>of</strong> their children. It enables adults to continue their education to at<br />
least the level <strong>of</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> secondary school. It makes available to adults the means to secure training that will<br />
enable them to become more employable, productive, and responsible citizens. The community education component <strong>of</strong><br />
the section makes available extended day school programs that address the needs <strong>of</strong> latchkey children; makes available<br />
educational vocational and cultural classes to local communities; provides tutor training to volunteers to assess students<br />
and schools; provides training on parent involvement issues; and provides youth at risk and preschool programs.<br />
CHILD NUTRITION/NON-SCHOOL PROGRAMS<br />
Consists <strong>of</strong> four individual programs that meet nutritional needs <strong>of</strong> selected groups. These groups include childcare,<br />
family day care, adult care, and summer feeding. All programs must meet stringent federal guidelines and conform to<br />
appropriate monitoring standards.<br />
PRIVATE SCHOOL LICENSURE<br />
The Private School Licensure Section licenses and regulates all private post-secondary schools pursuant to the <strong>Alabama</strong><br />
Private School Licensure Law. This section provides for students, educational institutions, and the general public protection<br />
from economic and academic fraud. This section also maintains supervision <strong>of</strong> all licensed schools which<br />
includes conducting on-site visits; processing licensure applications; handling consumer complaints; servicing student<br />
transcripts for closed (licensed) private schools; and registering all private, nondenominational and parochial schools.<br />
