TRAINING AND INFORMATION CAMPAIGN ON THE ... - Fokus

The specific goal of this project was to: upgrade the skills and knowledge of participants on the
effects of FGM (including HIV/AIDS) and other harmful traditional practices.
The primary beneficiaries were identified as women and girls. For the purposes of advocacy, secondary
project beneficiaries included women group leaders, village heads, district chiefs, and religious scholars
as influencers of decisions. The proposal states that traditionalists, circumcisers, traditional healers, and
people living with HIV/AIDS will also be targeted.
Specifically the project aimed to: train traditional birth attendants, circumciser s, and traditional
healers; establish networks of people living with HIV/AIDS; partner with traditional communicators
and train youth drama groups; intensify Family Life Education and HIV counselling; enlist the support
of traditional decision-makers; enhance IEC capacity of community health providers and traditional
healers; and sensitize the targeted communities, with the ultimate goal being a reduction in FGM
prevalence and increased empowerment of women and girls.
Purpose of the Review:
After three years of funding, the project is up for evaluation. 3 This is a summative evaluation. The
review will look at the impact of GAMCOTRAP’s project to educate and effect change in the area of
harmful traditional practices in The Gambia. It will examine the extent that project objectives were
achieved, challenges, lessons learned from the experiences, use of resources, and organization. Lessons
learned about best practices will be shared for others to replicate.
The evaluation will look at the process by which GAMCOTRAP staff implemented the programs
and the involvement of youth, survivors, and other stakeholders, insights from the implementation, and
opportunities opened up by the project.
Specifically, the evaluation will focus on and assess the following aspects:

The evaluation will describe the project as such, its background, how it came into being, how it is
organized and managed, what input there has been in the form of funding and personnel and activities,
and what the funding from FOKUS/NKTF has been used for. 4
