Committee on Committees – L. Fisher<br />
The slate <strong>of</strong> nominees was presented. Martin moved and Gilliam seconded to approve the<br />
slate. Fisher amended the slate, adding Stephen Owusu-Ansah as a nominee for a<br />
vacancy on the Research Board.<br />
Thompson moved and Gilliam seconded to approve as amended. The amended slate was<br />
unanimously approved.<br />
BOT Report<br />
A report on the July 23 BOT meeting in Chicago was sent to all senators and senators<br />
were asked if they have comments. Martin commented that much has changed since the<br />
BOT meeting. Martin noted that discussions at the July meeting seemed productive, and<br />
wondered if the governor would have made a different decision this month had he<br />
attended the July meeting as an ex-<strong>of</strong>ficio <strong>of</strong>ficer. Ting commended Martin for doing a<br />
marvelous job as the senate representative attending BOT meetings.<br />
Committee on Sustainability – 2008/<strong>2009</strong> Annual Report<br />
The committee’s report was sent to all senators. Ting noted that the sustainability web<br />
site <strong>of</strong>fers additional information and resources. Fisher commended the committee on<br />
their regular series <strong>of</strong> public events.<br />
Program Reviews<br />
Computer Science M.S.<br />
Helton presented the report <strong>of</strong> the Graduate Council (GC). Ted Mims, chair <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Computer Science Department, was present to answer questions. The Graduate Council’s<br />
report saw a need to increase efforts to recruit women and other under-represented groups<br />
to the program. Siddiquee asked about recruitment <strong>of</strong> underrepresented groups, and<br />
wondered whether the GC takes diversity <strong>of</strong> faculty into account. Helton said the GC was<br />
referring to both students and faculty regarding the diversity issue. Mims said that the<br />
department is doing everything it can to recruit a diverse student population.<br />
Ting asked whether GPA calculations for international students remain an issue in<br />
admissions. Mims said that a new computer program is in use that calculates GPA for<br />
international applicants.<br />
Computer Science B.S.<br />
Bapat summarized the program review report on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Undergraduate Council<br />
(UGC). He noted that the agenda incorrectly identified the CSC degrees as M.A. and<br />
B.A., when the correct titles are M.S. and B.S. The UGC commended the Computer<br />
Science Department for efforts to increase the diversity <strong>of</strong> full-time faculty through<br />
recent hires, and noted they would like to see these efforts continue. Bapat stated that<br />
there is a general trend toward lower numbers <strong>of</strong> women students in Computer Science.<br />
Siddiquee asked about the UGC’s recommendation in support <strong>of</strong> changing the current<br />
