Bulk dates 1900-1950
Extent: Ca. 510 items
Scope and content: This series contains manuscript music, primarily original works by Jelly Roll
Morton. Many are in Mr. Morton’s own hand, and were arranged for big band or written by Mr.
Morton around 1939 for Tempo-Music Publishing Co. Also included are transcriptions of Mr.
Morton’s music taken from his recordings, and a few pieces of music by other composers.
Biographical note: William Russell (1905-1992) was a jazz historian and researcher who focused
on traditional New Orleans jazz. Jelly Roll Morton (d. 1941) was a pianist, jazz composer and
arranger, and conductor. In the late 1930s he was staff writer for Tempo-Music Publishing
Company (Washington, DC), which was owned by Roy Carew. William Russell bought the
The following ten sheets (#286-295) contain a complete score on pages numbered 1-35
(page numbers were originally circled) for the composition “Finger Breaker” (composed by
Morton and recorded by him under the title “Finger Buster” as a solo piano piece in Washington,
DC in December 1938 on Jazz Man 12 (label number MLB-145). The pages of the score are
often not consecutive and in somewhat jumbled order. Pages one through four are for piano with
a few instructions and instrumental cues; pages five through thirty-five contain lines for four
saxophones, three trumpets, and three trombones.
The ten sheets also contain partial parts for first (#290) and second (#292) saxophones
and a complete part for third saxophone (#289); there is also what appears to be score musical
sketch material.
