Playwright and educator Allean Hale (b. 1913) began intense
research on the life and career of Tennessee Williams in the early
1960s. She has published widely on Williams and has edited
numerous reissues of Williams' work through New Directions
publishing company. Her papers include correspondence, research
notes, photographs, and ephemera related to Hale’s study of
Williams’s life and career.

Series Descriptions
Series 1: 1965-2007 Tennessee Williams Biography – This series contains various
items relating to the life of Tennessee Williams. Included in this
series are magazine articles and newspaper clippings, both
photocopies and original, about Tennessee Williams, his family,
and others close to him. Also included are analyses of his plays
and how they reflect upon Tennessee William Personally.
Timelines and lists of lovers and friends are also included in this
series. Articles and newspaper clippings about general
psychology, homosexuality, and religion are included, as well as
specific articles involving Tennessee Williams and these topics.
Also included in this series is information about the places
Tennessee Williams lived and traveled to. Boxes 1-4. See Also

Series 3: 1929-2000 Playscripts – This series includes Williams playscripts, most of
which are photocopies and appear to be copied out of books or
from manuscripts. There are some published versions. Most are in
English, but there are also some plays published in German and

Series 4: 1973-2008 Noh Play Research –This series includes clippings and
photocopies, from magazines and newspapers concerning Japanese
Noh and Kabuki plays in general. Information about Yukio
Mishima, his plays, and his connection to Tennessee Williams is
also included. Research about Williams’ Night at a Tokyo Hotel
and The Day on Which a Man Dies is also included. Box 9.
Series 5: 1996-1998 Not About Nightingales – Allean Hale wrote the introduction for
and edited the New Directions Publishing 1998 publication of Not
About Nightingales. The play was written in 1938 by Tennessee
Williams but was not produced until 1998. This series includes
correspondence between Allean Hale and New Directions
Publishing about the introduction and edits. Also included are
copies of the script with revisions representing various points in
the editing process. Newspaper and magazine clippings reviewing
and criticizing the book are also included in this series. Box 10
Series 6: 1997-2001 Stairs to the Roof Research – Allean Hale wrote the introduction
for and edited the New Directions 2000 publication of Stairs to the
Roof, which was completed in 1941 and first premiered in 1947 at
the Pasadena Playhouse. This series includes correspondence
between Allean Hale and New Directions Publishing about the
introduction and edits. Also included are copies of the script with
revisions representing various points in the editing process.
Newspaper clippings and magazine clippings reviewing and
criticizing the book are also included in this series. Box 11.

Series 7: 1996-1997 The Notebook of Trigorin - Allean Hale wrote the introduction
for and edited the New Directions 1996 publication of The
Notebook of Trigorin: A Free Adaptation of Anton Chekov’s The
Sea Gull. This is an unfinished play by Tennessee Williams,
adapting one of Anton Chekov’s major plays. This series includes
correspondence between Allean Hale and New Directions
Publishing about the introduction and edits. Also included are
copies of the script with revisions representing various points in
the editing process. Newspaper and magazine clippings reviewing
and criticizing the book are also included. Allean Hale also wrote
an article for the playbill of the premiere of The Notebook of
Trigorin held at the Cincinnati Playhouse in 1996. Related
correspondence and various drafts of the article are likewise
included. Box 12.
Series 8: 1978-2007 Festivals – Allean Hale attended and presented at many symposia,
festivals, and seminars between 1978 and 2007. This series
includes correspondence between Hale and organizers of these
events for planning purposes. Also included are drafts of speeches
and papers, and the research for them, presented by Hale at these
events. Also included are maps of the various locations these
events were held and brochures for various entertainment at these
locations. Boxes 12-14.
Series 9: 1936-2000 Photographs – This series includes photocopies and printouts of
photographs found in magazines, newspapers, etc., during the
course of Hale’s research. Also included are computer printouts
and postcards. Subjects of the photos include Tennessee Williams,
play production, and play promotions. Box 14.
Series 10: 1960-1995 Theatre and Literary Trends – This series includes magazine
articles, newspaper clippings, and computer printouts about theatre
history, types of theatre, theatre criticism and trends. Also
included are articles on gay theatre, British Theatre and film noir.

Series 11: 1968-2002 Tennessee Williams Circle of Friends – This series includes
clippings ands photocopies from magazines and newspapers
concerning people Tennessee Williams knew, worked with and
were influenced by, including actors and directors. Box 15.

photocopies from magazines and newspapers concerning
Tennessee Williams’s plays. Boxes 15-16.
Series 13: 1970-2008 Articles Written by Allean Hale About TW – This series was
boxed by Allean Hale and sent separately from the previously
described material. Hale also included a note about this series,
which includes writings by herself about Tennessee Williams.
These works were written for publication, for festivals, meetings,
symposia, and for programs. Box 17.
