Playwright and educator Allean Hale (b. 1913) began intense<br />

research on the life and career of Tennessee Williams in the early<br />

1960s. She has publ<strong>is</strong>hed widely on Williams and has edited<br />

numerous re<strong>is</strong>sues of Williams' work through New Directions<br />

publ<strong>is</strong>hing company. Her papers include correspondence, research<br />

notes, photographs, and ephemera related to Hale’s study of<br />

Williams’s life and career.<br />

Series 1: 1965-2007 Tennessee Williams Biography – Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong> contains various<br />

items relating to the life of Tennessee Williams. Included in th<strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>series</strong> are magazine articles and newspaper clippings, both<br />

photocopies and original, about Tennessee Williams, h<strong>is</strong> family,<br />

and others close to him. Also included are analyses of h<strong>is</strong> plays<br />

and how they reflect upon Tennessee William Personally.<br />

Timelines and l<strong>is</strong>ts of lovers and friends are also included in th<strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>series</strong>. Articles and newspaper clippings about general<br />

psychology, homosexuality, and religion are included, as well as<br />

specific articles involving Tennessee Williams and these topics.<br />

Also included in th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong> <strong>is</strong> information about the places<br />

Engl<strong>is</strong>h, but there are also some plays publ<strong>is</strong>hed in German and<br />

Series 4: 1973-2008 Noh Play Research –Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong> includes clippings and<br />

photocopies, from magazines and newspapers concerning Japanese<br />

Noh and Kabuki plays in general. Information about Yukio<br />

M<strong>is</strong>hima, h<strong>is</strong> plays, and h<strong>is</strong> connection to Tennessee Williams <strong>is</strong><br />

also included. Research about Williams’ Night at a Tokyo Hotel<br />

and The Day on Which a Man Dies <strong>is</strong> also included. Box 9.<br />

Series 5: 1996-1998 Not About Nightingales – Allean Hale wrote the introduction for<br />

and edited the New Directions Publ<strong>is</strong>hing 1998 publication of Not<br />

About Nightingales. The play was written in 1938 by Tennessee<br />

Williams but was not produced until 1998. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong> includes<br />

correspondence between Allean Hale and New Directions<br />

Publ<strong>is</strong>hing about the introduction and edits. Also included are<br />

copies of the script with rev<strong>is</strong>ions representing various points in<br />

the editing process. Newspaper and magazine clippings reviewing<br />

and criticizing the book are also included in th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong>. Box 10<br />

Series 6: 1997-2001 Stairs to the Roof Research – Allean Hale wrote the introduction<br />

for and edited the New Directions 2000 publication of Stairs to the<br />

Roof, which was completed in 1941 and first premiered in 1947 at<br />

the Pasadena Playhouse. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong> includes correspondence<br />

between Allean Hale and New Directions Publ<strong>is</strong>hing about the<br />

introduction and edits. Also included are copies of the script with<br />

Series 7: 1996-1997 The Notebook of Trigorin - Allean Hale wrote the introduction<br />

for and edited the New Directions 1996 publication of The<br />

Notebook of Trigorin: A Free Adaptation of Anton Chekov’s The<br />

Sea Gull. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> an unfin<strong>is</strong>hed play by Tennessee Williams,<br />

adapting one of Anton Chekov’s major plays. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong> includes<br />

correspondence between Allean Hale and New Directions<br />

Publ<strong>is</strong>hing about the introduction and edits. Also included are<br />

copies of the script with rev<strong>is</strong>ions representing various points in<br />

the editing process. Newspaper and magazine clippings reviewing<br />

and criticizing the book are also included. Allean Hale also wrote<br />

an article for the playbill of the premiere of The Notebook of<br />

Trigorin held at the Cincinnati Playhouse in 1996. Related<br />

correspondence and various drafts of the article are likew<strong>is</strong>e<br />

Series 8: 1978-2007 Festivals – Allean Hale attended and presented at many symposia,<br />

festivals, and seminars between 1978 and 2007. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong><br />

includes correspondence between Hale and organizers of these<br />

events for planning purposes. Also included are drafts of speeches<br />

and papers, and the research for them, presented by Hale at these<br />

events. Also included are maps of the various locations these<br />

events were held and brochures for various entertainment at these<br />

locations. Boxes 12-14.<br />

Series 9: 1936-2000 Photographs – Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong> includes photocopies and printouts of<br />

photographs found in magazines, newspapers, etc., during the<br />

course of Hale’s research. Also included are computer printouts<br />

and postcards. Subjects of the photos include Tennessee Williams,<br />

play production, and play promotions. Box 14.<br />

Series 10: 1960-1995 Theatre and Literary Trends – Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong> includes magazine<br />

articles, newspaper clippings, and computer printouts about theatre<br />

h<strong>is</strong>tory, types of theatre, theatre critic<strong>is</strong>m and trends. Also<br />

included are articles on gay theatre, Brit<strong>is</strong>h Theatre and film noir.<br />

clippings ands photocopies from magazines and newspapers<br />

concerning people Tennessee Williams knew, worked with and<br />

Series 13: 1970-2008 Articles Written by Allean Hale About TW – Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong> was<br />

<strong>box</strong>ed by Allean Hale and sent separately from the previously<br />

described material. Hale also included a note about th<strong>is</strong> <strong>series</strong>,<br />

which includes writings by herself about Tennessee Williams.<br />
