KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together”
NEWSLETTER
21 - 2013
Thursday 1 st August, 2013
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
1. A SAFE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
STRANGER DANGER
All schools in the DEECD receive IRIS alert notices from
Emergency Management when there are potentially
dangerous situations, which may affect schools and other
DEECD facilities. The warnings may be for a particular area or
town or for the whole state. This includes weather warnings
e.g fierce storms, wind, fire, dangerous spillages, toxic fumes,
traffic situations and inappropriate behaviour from strangers.
As a school we plan and practice for emergency drills and
remind our students of the dangers of inappropriate behaviour
from strangers. As parents we would ask you to regularly
reinforce with your children not to talk to strangers or to assist
them in any way. Make sure that you know the time when your
child should be home or leave from school and the route they
will take.
Parents are asked to report any strange or inappropriate
behaviour they might see to the police and then to inform us. It
is important that the police receive accurate first-hand
information form the persons who witness the behaviours.
2. INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR AND BULLYING
As a school we reinforce our three R’s of respect,
responsibility and rights with our students. It is important that
we are all “learning together” and making sure that we are
acting in a responsible and respectful way ensuring that we all
have the right to learn.
We have clear consequences for inappropriate behaviour,
which may include disrespectful language, actions and lack of
cooperation. We do our very best to investigate and listen to
“both sides of the story” and enlist the help of eyewitnesses
where we can. It is important that we do listen and ask our
students what happened and encourage them to take
responsibility for their actions and for the consequences that
follow. We seek your cooperation and input with this at home
in reinforcing the three R’s with your children so that we can
all enjoy a safe school environment.
Bullying is repeated targeted physical or verbal abuse directed
at one or more others and is usually accompanied by silence
and the threat of more bullying if someone tells!
It is important to note any changes in your child’s behaviour
and particularly a reluctance to come to school. When we
know about bullying we can do our best to deal with it – if you
don’t know and we don’t know it will continue with harmful
effects to the victim and the bully.
3. ASSEMBLY
Monday mornings are a great way to celebrate individual,
team and whole school achievement.
This Monday we are changing the seating arrangements for
assembly and we will be seated to face the rear wall of the
gym. We will be having a Haka (I am sorry for the incorrect
date published last time) and we warmly invite you to watch
this stirring cultural dance.
REACH FOR THE STARS!
This week the year five and six students participated in the
Australian Literacy and Numeracy Week reach for the stars
‘This is Rubbish’ activities. Students collected, classified and
counted rubbish out in the yard after recess as well as making
garbage graphs. Each grade completed a survey answering
various questions to find out how much and what types of
rubbish are found in our school. Our grade results have been
entered online and we will soon be able to compare our data
with other schools. Students will then be able to look at how
much rubbish our school produces and think of ways to reduce
our waste.
