PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
1. WHAT SECONDARY COLLEGE SHOULD I SEND MY
CHILD TO???
At this time of the year in particular our Year 6 parents and
students are thinking about their choices for secondary
college. The secondary colleges in Melton have been
holding information evenings/days and have documentation
available for you. Kurunjang Secondary College attracts
most of our students and for many parents it is a
convenient and worthwhile choice. We have a number of
transition programs with them.
As an ex Year 6 teacher I was often asked my advice – my
response is this -
� All Government schools have excellent facilities
and resources.
� You will hear good and bad things about every
school
� You know your child and their interests, strengths
and weaknesses
� You know your child’s ability to choose friends and
their work habits.
� Talk to your child about their preferences and why
– because all my friends are going may or may
not be a good reason
I would encourage you to attend information sessions,
gather information and make appointments to meet with
year level coordinators and Assistant Principals or
Principals. Once you have all the information talk it over
with your child and make the decision.
2. PARENTS AS VOLUNTEERS
Mrs Kathleen McInnes, Mrs Frederick and Mrs McCall
held session 3 of this program today in the new parent’s
room. It was well attended and Mrs Frederick explained
some of the mysteries of the reading program and the
color and letter coding of take home books. I talked about
Parents and Friends and School Council. Next week is
the final session but the group will continue to meet on an
adhoc basis during the year. Due to the interest and
success of this program plans for another Parents as
Volunteers program in Term 2 are being drawn up.
3. PARENTS AND FRIENDS
Over the past two years Mr Tony Johns has led Parents
and Friends doing a great job. This year he is taking a
back seat due to his work commitments and P&F was
looking for a new leader. Mrs Kylie Di Benedetto has
“volunteered “ to be the point of contact and work with Mrs
McCall our staff liaison to organise the calendar of
activities for the year. Mrs Susan Butt from School Council
is also liaison with School Council. Last year fundraising
money went towards much needed artificial turf and prior
to that to shade sails.

MCCALL OR MRS BUTT. NAMES CAN BE LEFT IN THE
BOX AT THE OFFICE.
Formal Parents and Friends meetings will be held on a
Monday morning after assembly and the first meeting will

be held on Monday 23 rd April at 9.30am. Please come along
to give your ideas. You can participate by coming to
meetings, you don’t have to make all of them or by helping out
at “Working bees” for fundraisers eg raffles, Mothers Day stall.
Meetings will only be held two or three times a term.
3. STUDENT LEADERSHIP
Our student leadership program in Years 5 & 6 commences
with our partnership projects in Term 2. There is a separate
leaflet highlighting the great things we have planned for our
students. We are very appreciative of the support of our local
community.
4. COTTAGE BY THE SEA
Selected students in Years 4 & 5 will be attending a 3 day
camp over the school holidays at Cottage By The Sea. This
is a new initiative for Kurunjang Primary School this year that
has been organised by Mrs Kathleen McInnes, to help our
students to develop leadership skills.
5. SCHOOL COUNCIL
Council will meet this Tuesday at 7.00pm for its Annual
Meeting and to receive the Annual Report to the School
Community. It will be the first meeting of the new School
Council and elections will be held for office bearers.
6. TEACHING AND LEARNING
All of our students from Prep – Year 6 have been enjoying
independent reading and writing. Our students are spending
increasing amounts of time producing high quality work with
these two important tasks.
Each day our students tackle the challenges of the numeracy
“problem of the day” and explore different strategies to solve
the problem.
Ukuleles continue to be strummed, artistic masterpieces
produced, sporting skills developed and achievements
celebrated. Our year 4 students are receiving their netbooks
for the1-1 program. NAPLAN preparation - giving our students
support in the test genre have commenced. The Prep
students will be holding a special celebration and inviting their
family and “kinder” teaches to join them as they complete
Term1.
Mathletics and spelladrome software programs continue to be
a great tool for self paced learning and revision at school and
at home.

CARTOON
WORKSHOP
On Thursday 19 th and
Friday 20 th April (Week
1 Term 2) there will be
a cartoon workshop
incursion for all children
in years 3-6.
The workshops will be
conducted by Richard Galbraith who has been a professional
writer, illustrator cartoonist and storyteller for the past 27
years. Many children in these year levels have started writers
notebooks this Term and this will provide them all with a
unique opportunity to expand their writing and artistic skills.
Richard’s workshops are designed to help students create
and draw cartoon characters and weave them into simple
stories. The workshops cover character creation, expression,
action, storylines, speech bubbles and colour.
The cost of this incursion is covered in the $42.50 Whole
School Performing Arts Levy that was paid with Book Packs
at the beginning of the year. For those who haven’t paid the
levy, the cost for this incursion will be $5.00. Notes will be
sent home to families who are required to pay for this
incursion and money must be returned by Friday 30 th March.

COTTAGE BY THE SEA
We wish all the students in grade 4 & 5 who are attending
Cottage By The Sea over the school holidays an amazing four
days away.
A reminder to our lucky school holiday campers, that payment

SPECIALISTS NEWS
Last Friday Miss Saxton conducted the
WMR Primary School Music teacher
training session. The session was well
attended and was a good chance for the
music teachers in the Melton region to get
together.
The Westside Arts concert will not be
taking place this year. We will be exploring
other options for the children to enjoy performance
opportunities.
This Friday, 23 rd March will be the last session for this term.
We will then commence again next term.

OSHCLUB NEWS
OSHClub Kurunjang provides Outside School Hours Care
(OSHC) for school aged children between Prep to Year 6.
We are all about Happy Children Learning!
The program operates between 3.10pm until 6.30pm each
day during the school term, in the Art room. As part of the
OSHClub program we offer a wide range of games, craft
and physical activities each day. A healthy afternoon tea is
provided of seasonal fruits and vegetables each day.
Congratulations to two of our OSHClub students for their
achievements. School Captain Aarnav Venkastesh – 5/6B
and School Vice Captain Daniel Joynson -5/6 D. It was a
privilege to attend school assembly to see both students
being presented with their badges well done to you both.
OSHClub will be open for EARLY DISMISSAL, Last Day
Term 1 Friday 30th March 2.20pm closing at 6.30pm
SHARP. A late fee charge of $2.00 per minute per child
will occur for late pickups.
The program will not accept students on this day without an
