1) AC Induced Corrosion
The presentation is a case study of a corrosion leak on
an NPS 16 HP line running in a high tension wire corridor.
The cause of the corrosion was due to induced AC current.
The line was in-line inspected after the first leak was
detected. The inspection identified a number of Immediate
Indications, one of which was found to be leaking as it was
excavated. The study includes the actions that were taken
system wide as a result of this leak.
7) Mandatory Continuing Professional
Development - a Canadian Perspective
The enhancement of technical and professionnal skills
for engineers has become a priority for many professional
corporations across Canada. L’Ordre des Ingénieurs
du Québec in the province of Quebec passed a new
regulation to make continuing education mandatory
starting in April 2011. This regulation aims to be an
incentive for all engineers to handle their professional
development and continuing education within the six
following competencies: 1) To come on terms with its
professional status; 2) To solve problems using applied
science and rules of the art; 3) To communicate efficiently;
4) To ensure high standards of quality in its professional
activities; 5) To ensure adequate technical risk management;
6) To manage activities, technical crews and projects. The
round table will focus on how canadian gas companies will
handle continuing education needs for their engineers in
regards of present and future obligations in regulations.
Mapping of Underground Utility Infrastructure standard
is a consolidation of general mapping, utility industry best
practices and internal company processes. This round
table will openly explore the key elements of the S250,
it’s benefits and risks with time to discuss mapping
Achieving Process Safety Excellence
When implemented properly, Process Safety Management
(PSM) can be an effective tool for increasing not only the
safety of an operation, but its efficiency, cost-effectiveness,
and quality. DuPont, a science-based products and services
company with 200+ years of operating experience, pioneered
many of the concepts of PSM. This presentation will discuss
key factors, based on our own operating experience and the
experience gained from our client engagements that help
drive PSM and operational excellence, regardless of process
or industry.
Specifically, this presentation will focus on the importance of:
- A strong safety culture;
- The right organizational structure and metrics;
- A strong audit program.
12) Performance Criteria - Municipal
and Public Utility Requirements
Recent investments for infrastructures led many
municipalities to look closer at utility companies
operations for better coordination in ROW. Despite of
the engineering and project management staff expertise,
utilities are often compelled to use municipal technical
specifications for cuts reinstatement. Those requirements
have significant financial and logistic impacts. Though
municipal concerns are relevant, performance criteria,
have to be defined. Most municipal specifications
focus on reinstatement techniques but are silent on
performance requirements. It is in this context that
Gaz Métro developed a methodology to assess the
performance of its reinstated cuts based on the
principles of typical pavement management processes.
A case study will illustrate the concept and the
application of this innovative methodology.
14) Horizontal Directional Drilling
Using Intercept Method
An 800m HDD installation beneath the Lawrence River was
performed using the intercept method. The project was
executed in order to replace a bridge mounted pipeline on
the North Channel Bridge in Cornwall On. The pipeline is
the primary supply to St. Lawrence Gas in New York State,
an affiliate company of Enbridge Gas Distribution. In order
to accommodate the construction timeline of a new bridge
it was necessary to expedite the crossing. The project also
involved liaising with local stakeholders, First Nations and
federal authorities. The presentation will speak to the
complexities, technology, timeline and lessons learned
from the project.
17) “Black Starting” in Preparation
for the Next Major Blackout:
the Dawn Microgrid
The Northeast blackout of 2003 exposed the vulnerability
of the power grid to a prolonged failure. At the Dawn
Operations Centre, the heart of Union Gas’ Storage and
Transmission Operations, a steady supply of AC power is
necessary to sustain critical control, communication, and
cooling systems. In addition to reminders from the 2003
blackout, Dawn’s aging fleet of standby gas generators
and an inherently weak rural feeder from Hydro One have
made the reliability of its electric power supply a growing
concern. This talk will discuss how Union Gas recently
addressed this problem through a control system upgrade,
which enables low voltage gas generators to restore
Dawn’s 27.6 kV grid.
20) Operational Efficiency
Gains through Technology
The presentation will cover a technology initiative
undertaken by Intermountain Gas to reduce business
costs. Intermountain introduced a concept of capturing
inspection data with field devices and barcodes to reduce
“Back-Office” operations and improve data integrity.
19) Booster Compressor
The booster compressor technology focuses on recovering
natural gas when purging pipelines. With the aid of a
booster compressor natural gas is extracted from any
part of a pipeline that is isolated from the system and
re-injected into an unaffected part of the system or another
receiving pipeline. Information on the development,
implementation and benefits will be discussed.
