A sammelband of six separately-published
translations of tracts by the
religious writer and satirist Joseph
Hall (1574-1656), Bishop of
Norwich. All printed in Geneva
between 1628 and 1632, these were
put into French by Theodore
Jaquemot (1597-1676), who translated
a large number of Hall’s works.
Of particular interest here is a translation
of Halls condemnation of foreign
travel, Quo vadis A just censure of
travel (London, 1617), in which he
expounded his view that travelling
abroad was a dangerous and unnecessary
innovation that encouraged vice.
Other works found here include
translations of his anti-papal The peace
of Rome (London, 1609), Occasionall
meditations (London, 1630), The
righteous mammon (London, 1618)
and his sermon preached at the ten
year anniversary of the accession of
James I, An holy panegyrick. A sermon
preached at Paules Crosse upon the
anniversarie solemnitie of the happie
inauguration of our dread soveraigne lord
King James, Mar. 24. 1613. (London,
1613). All of these translations are
rare.
