FRANKFURT PRICE CURRENT
83. [PRICE CURRENT.] [FRANKFURT] … Preisz-Courant in
Frankfurt am Main …
This printed price current and investment circular was issued in
Frankfurt and is dated 5 November 1801 and posted to the colour merchants
Carl Anton Venino in Würzburg. In addition to the price current
of two columns listing commodities such as coffee, honey, peppers,
indigo and tea, there is a full-page printed circular letter offering comments
on the changes in commodity prices and other investment information.
A contemporary endorsement on the verso of the second leaf,
“Mayer & Sohn”, presumably identifies the company that issued the document.
ENGLISH WINE WAREHOUSE IN FLORENCE
£400
84. [PRICE CURRENT.] [FLORENCE.] J. H. Brown’s wine and
tea warehouse Via Rondinelli n.os 4205 & 4204, Florence.
[Florence, c.1850.] Printed price current. 4to (21 x 27cm) [3], [1, blank]pp.,
drop-head title, printed on blue paper, very good.
An unusual mid-nineteenth century price-current listing the goods sold
by J.H.Brown, presumably an Englishman, at his “wine and tea warehouse”
in Florence. In a printed note to his customers he comments that
he is “the first to introduce into Italy the system of moderate profits and
low prices …” Details are included of his “bank and exchange office”
also. Amongst the goods on sale, in addition to teas and wines, the price
current lists different “potted meats”, “pickles” and “sauces”, “preserved
fish” as well as a selection of “English cutlery”. Brown was no doubt
serving the British expatriate community as it seems unlikely that there
would have been much Italian demand for “bloater paste”, “English gin”
or “Guinness’s Stout”.
