125. WALKER, Edward. A list of genuine medicines,
&c. sold by Edw. Walker, at the Hue and Cry Printing-
Office, Pilgrim-Street, Newcastle.
[Newcastle, Edward Walker. 1800.] Handbill. Single printed sheet. 4to
(21 x 26cm) printed in 3 columns, old folds, uncut, two small seal marks
in margins touching a few letters, small closed marginal tear not affecting
text, some light dusting, verso with contemporary annotation.
This priced list of patent medicines sold in 1800 by the Newcastle
printer Edward Walker advertises over one hundred and sixty
products. Beginning with “Amboyna powder for the teeth”, it
includes a wide variety of remedies for differen conditions:
“Ching’s worm lozenges … Cornwell’s oriental vegetable cordial
… Ford’s balsam of Horehound … Huxham’s tincture of
Peruvian bark … Millman’s itch ointment … Pidding’s balsam of
liquorice … Ruspini’s tincture for the teeth … Sibly’s solar tincture
… Spilsbury’s antiscorbutic drops … Trotter’s Asiatic tooth
powder …” A printed note advises that Walker sold also “writing
paper, wafers, sealing wax, pens, quills &c.” The sheet can be
dated from a date watermark in the paper of “1800”. A medical
rarity with a wealth of information on the patent medicines sold
in England at the end of the eighteenth century.

[Saigon, c.1910.] 8vo (15.5 x 27cm) [40]pp., printed Chinese-style
on double leaves, text printed xylographically in Chinese and Vietnamese,
very good in stitched paper wrapper.
Printed xylographically, this Chinese primer for Vietnamese students
is based on the sixth century Thousand Character Classic.

Londini, J. White. 1798. First edition. 8vo (11 x 16.5cm) vii, [1],
207, [1]pp., very good in original calf-backed marbled boards, spine
rubbed, joints cracked but sturdy, chip to foot of spine, light wear to
extremities.
First edition of this uncommon synopsis of British plants
compiled by Rev. Jelinger Symons (1778-1851) and based on
Arthur Broughton’s Enchiridion botanicum (London, 1782).
Symons was vicar of Monkland, Herefordshire from 1808
and rector of Radnage, Buckinghamshire from 1833. A graduate
of St. John’s College Cambridge, he became a fellow of
the Linnean Society.
