125. WALKER, Edward. A list of genuine medicines,<br />
&c. sold by Edw. Walker, at the Hue and Cry Printing-<br />
Office, Pilgrim-Street, Newcastle.<br />
[Newcastle, Edward Walker. 1800.] Handbill. Single printed sheet. 4to<br />
(21 x 26cm) printed in 3 columns, old folds, uncut, two small seal marks<br />
in margins touching a few letters, small closed marginal tear not affecting<br />
text, some light dusting, verso with contemporary annotation.<br />
This priced list of patent medicines sold in 1800 by the Newcastle<br />
printer Edward Walker advertises over one hundred and sixty<br />
products. Beginning with “Amboyna powder for the teeth”, it<br />
includes a wide variety of remedies for differen conditions:<br />
“Ching’s worm lozenges … Cornwell’s oriental vegetable cordial<br />
… Ford’s balsam of Horehound … Huxham’s tincture of<br />
Peruvian bark … Millman’s itch ointment … Pidding’s balsam of<br />
liquorice … Ruspini’s tincture for the teeth … Sibly’s solar tincture<br />
… Spilsbury’s antiscorbutic drops … Trotter’s Asiatic tooth<br />
powder …” A printed note advises that Walker sold also “writing<br />
paper, wafers, sealing wax, pens, quills &c.” The sheet can be<br />
dated from a date watermark in the paper of “1800”. A medical<br />
rarity with a wealth of information on the patent medicines sold<br />
in England at the end of the eighteenth century.<br />

on double leaves, text printed xylographically in Chinese and Vietnamese,<br />
very good in stitched paper wrapper.<br />
Printed xylographically, this Chinese primer for Vietnamese students<br />
is based on the sixth century Thousand Character Classic.<br />

Londini, J. White. 1798. First edition. 8vo (11 x 16.5cm) vii, [1],<br />
207, [1]pp., very good in original calf-backed marbled boards, spine<br />
rubbed, joints cracked but sturdy, chip to foot of spine, light wear to<br />
extremities.<br />
First edition of this uncommon synopsis of British plants<br />
compiled by Rev. Jelinger Symons (1778-1851) and based on<br />
Arthur Broughton’s Enchiridion botanicum (London, 1782).<br />
Symons was vicar of Monkland, Herefordshire from 1808<br />
and rector of Radnage, Buckinghamshire from 1833. A graduate<br />
of St. John’s College Cambridge, he became a fellow of<br />
the Linnean Society.<br />
