Amos Wako: Poisoned Legacy
Another significant development in the justice sector occurred when the curtain
finally came down on the tenure of the country’s long serving Attorney General.
To mark the change of guard at the office of the Attorney General, AfriCOG
made a critical assessment of the tenure of Amos Sitswila Wako who was the
Attorney General of Kenya from May 1991 to August 2011. In a publication
titled ‘Poisoned Legacy” AfriCOG narrates how, under Amos Wako’s watch, the
credibility of the office of the Attorney General was destroyed as a result of his
complete failure to exercise authority in a way that imposed on the Kenyan
political system the values for which the office was first established. The report
analyses Wako’s performance in main areas and concludes by warning that the
struggle to achieve the full promise of Kenya’s new Constitution could fall prey
to Wako’s poisoned legacy of protection of incompetence, impunity, corruption
and massive human rights abuses.
