From the President 

Dear Ursuline Family Members, 

The year 2003-2004 was a hallmark year for Ursuline 

Academy in many ways, all under the banner of our 

Campaign theme, “Breaking New Ground, Building 

Together.” A focal point was May 5 when we literally 

broke ground for our Convocation and Athletic Center. 

We celebrated this with a public ceremony that 

brought the Ursuline family together on a beautiful 

May day. However, on a day-to-day basis, with no 

ceremony, the Ursuline Academy family continued to 

live out Serviam in the dedication of its co-workers 

and volunteers, in the many service projects the 

students embraced individually and as groups, in the 

Service Trips as far away as Matamoros, Mexico, 

where students and co-workers literally broke ground 

to help some new friends in the colonia build a new 

home, put on a new roof, or pour a cement floor in 

their simple older home. 

As this year ended, under the leadership of UA’s Technology 

committee, co-workers began to prepare for the 

implementation of our most far reaching step in technology. 

Smart boards had been ordered for all classrooms 

and teachers began the important in-service and 

prep work needed to fully utilize this costly but very 

useful tool. Teachers received their laptops in order to 

have the summer to become comfortable using them. 

This has been a hallmark of UA’s Technology 

Program—teacher preparation for any new technology 

in order to fully utilize it. 

This was a year in which Ursuline’s Leadership for 

Diversity began to be looked at as a model for other 

schools, and Patricia Harris ’62, our Diversity Coordinator, 

was asked to serve on other committees or as a 

mentor for other programs. In addition, the UA Soccer 

Team broke new ground with its first-ever Second 

Place in the Missouri State Championship. Go Bears! 

My letter is really a companion piece to the Thank 

You letter on this page. All of this ground breaking 

and building together that we do at Ursuline each and 

every day is possible because of the time, talents and 

treasures of all in the Ursuline family.

support of Ursuline and the young women who are at 

the heart of our mission.

Thank You from the 

Development Department 

A simple thank you never seems to adequately convey our deep 

appreciation for all that our parents, alumnae, parents of alumnae, 

grandparents, friends and co-workers contribute each year to the life 

and mission of Ursuline Academy. 

We are truly grateful to all those generous donors who support our 

fundraising endeavors. Each and every gift to our Annual Giving 

Campaign is important and has allowed us to increase faculty salaries, 

make substantial improvements in the technology area and minimize 

tuition increases. Donations to the Alumnae Annual Giving fund are 

used for financial aid, and we extend a very special thank you to 

Thelma Hartnett in the Alumnae Relations Office who made over 500 

phone calls and wrote 880 personal notes to Alumnae. Alums 

responded…with over $11,000 in donations from new donors to 

surpass their goal of $55,000 and reach a record of $68,891!!! 

Your contributions to the Capital Campaign, Breaking New Ground, 

and Building Together are deeply appreciated. We are at an exciting 

time in the history of the Academy and your enthusiastic response to 

the Campaign signifies the importance of this project. Ground was 

broken for the new Convocation and Athletic Center on May 5, 2004, 

and construction is proceeding on time while we continue with the 

Campaign. 

Our many thanks to all those who step forward each year and take on 

leadership roles, whether as a School Board member, Capital 

Campaign Cabinet or Committee member, chair of the Buona Festa 

Auction, Fall Festival Chair, Golf Classic Chair, Parent Club President, 

Father’s Club President or chairs of Mother/Daughter, Father/ 

Daughter. Each of these roles takes a tremendous amount of time and 

energy, and we are very grateful for your commitment and support. 

And we deeply appreciate all those who share their precious time and 

talents to make or bring cookies to the many receptions, to collate, 

fold and assemble the monthly newsletter, to direct parking, to work in 

the Bookstore each and every month…counting out fish and watermelon 

candy, to help with dance recitals, choral concerts, plays and 

sports activities, and to Father’s Club who spend a spring Saturday 

trimming shrubbery, raking leaves, and making improvements to the 

campus. 

The list goes on and on and we cannot say thank you often enough. 

Our parents, alumnae, parents of alumnae, and co-workers live out the 

SERVIAM motto daily and are exemplary role models for our 

students. Thank you for your dedication and support and all that you 

do to help make an excellent school even better. Your commitment 

aids us in continuing our mission of educating young women for 

academic excellence in an atmosphere of community/family spirit and 

in the Ursuline tradition of SERVIAM.

On May 5, 2004, the Ursuline community held a Ground Breaking 

ceremony for our new Convocation and Athletic Center on the Ursuline 

Academy campus. 

“We are excited to kick-off the Phase I construction of our Breaking 

New Ground ~ Building Together Capital Campaign,” said Sr. 

Madonna O’Hara, osu, President of Ursuline Academy. “The Convocation 

and Athletic Center will provide new playing courts, bleacher seating 

for fans and supporters, and locker rooms with showers for both our 

home team and visiting guests. A new Lobby/Reception area will 

connect the Center with a new Performing Arts Center which will be 

completed in Phase II of our Long-Range Facilities Master Plan.” 

The architectural firm of Mitchell and Hugeback designed the 12,000 

square foot convocation/gym. The Center will house regulation volleyball 

and basketball courts that can be converted into two practice 

courts. Bleacher seating will accommodate 750-800 spectators with 

room for an additional 750 chair seating. In addition to more than 

doubling the capacity of the current gymnasium, the Center will also 

include a fitness center, offices for physical education personnel, training 

room a classroom/study area, concession stand and storage area. 

Kozeny-Wagner, one of the premier institutional general contractors in 

the St. Louis area, was selected to be General Contractor for the project. 

Construction is on schedule with the building totally enclosed. 

Completion of the whole project is scheduled for June 2005. 

Ursuline alumnae and family connections to the project run deep. 

Susan Radomski Kozeny ’85 is married to Patrick Kozeny, President of 

Kozeny-Wagner. Richard Wagner who began the firm with Donald 

Kozeny, Pat’s father, is the father of Cindy Wagner Mentel ’78, Michelle 

Wagner ’83 and Jennifer Wagner ’85. Evelyn Krussel Fleddermann 

’89 was one of the original architects at Mitchell-Hugeback to 

work on the design of the building. Her desire to replicate the style of 

Merici Hall is evident in the roof line of the new construction. Emily 

Jones ’99 and Lee Taylor (father of Emily Taylor ’05), owner of Red 

Rock Communications, designed the Campaign logo and brochure. 

Many Ursuline family connections run through the subcontractors as 

well, including the Winters, Matejcic, Woodward, and Vitale families, 

among others.

new facility. Thanks to their generosity, construction is under way for the Convocation and Athletic Center
